Charms Fact File Body Text

Charms was a required class taught at [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It was compulsory until O.W.L. but useful for most careers to continue up to N.E.W.T. Similarly to [Transfiguration](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/transfiguration), Charms allowed a more creative approach to magic, where students learnt to levitate objects ([Wingardium Leviosa](/fact-file/spells/the-levitation-charm)), summon things ([Accio](/fact-file/spells/the-summoning-charm)) or simply make their [wand](/fact-file/objects/wand) light up ([Lumos](/fact-file/spells/the-wand-lighting-charm)). Taught by [Professor Flitwick](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/filius-flitwick) in Harry's time at Hogwarts, this class was unpredictable - as part of the first-year exam, for example, Flitwick's class were asked to magically persuade a pineapple to dance off a desk! This didn't stop [Hermione Granger](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hermione-granger) somehow getting a hundred and twelve per cent on that exam, however.

Not quite as big as a [giant](/fact-file/creatures/giant), but with even less intelligence, trolls can grow up to twelve feet tall and have a propensity towards violence. Weighing up to a tonne, trolls have enormous strength and an apparent taste for human flesh. Classified as a ‘beast’ rather than a ‘being’ thanks to their low IQ, some skilled magical linguists are able to communicate with trolls. [Harry Potter](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter) and [Ron Weasley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/ron-weasley) managed to take down a troll that had been 'let loose' in Hogwarts in their first year.

Newt Scamander Fact File Body Text

Newt Scamander was a Magizoologist who travelled the world in the early 20th century researching magical creatures. On his travels, he carried a [magically enhanced suitcase](/fact-file/objects/newt-scamanders-case), capable of housing his fantastic beasts. On his travels, he carried out research for his seminal textbook [Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them](/fact-file/objects/fantastic-beasts-and-where-to-find-them), but his travels weren't purely academic. During the 1920s, Newt found himself embroiled in the events surrounding the rise of [Gellert Grindelwald](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/gellert-grindelwald), working with his old teacher and friend, [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore), to stand against him.

Faced with the threat of [Death Eaters](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/death-eaters) descending on them at any moment after Voldemort's return, [Hermione Granger](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hermione-granger) made sure that she and her friends were ready for an escape. She enchanted a small beaded handbag with an [Undetectable Extension Charm](/fact-file/spells/the-undetectable-extention-charm) that she made sure to carry everywhere with her. Although the bag looked inconspicuous, it was large enough on the inside that it could carry supplies, clothing and camping gear to keep Harry, Ron and Hermione going whilst hunting [Voldemort's](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) Horcruxes. Hermione even used it to bring copious amounts of books with her, as is Hermione's way.

An advanced spell that was heavily controlled, the Undetectable Extension Charm was used to expand the interior space of an object without changing the external dimensions. The charm could be used on practical objects such as family tents and official cars. [Newt Scamander](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/newt-scamander) famously used the charm on his magical briefcase in order to house a magical menagerie, whilst [Hermione Granger](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hermione-granger) displayed her talent for complex magic when she cast this charm on a small [beaded handbag](/fact-file/objects/hermiones-beaded-bag) in order to carry all the essentials, including a mobile library, that she, Harry and Ron would need while on the run, looking for Horcruxes.
