Dark Arts Fact File Body Text

Dark Arts referred to any magic that was mainly used to control, harm or kill its target. Brewing harmful potions, using hexes and curses, and breeding dark creatures could be illegal, not only because of the terrible consequences of using it but also for the corrupting nature of the practice which affected the practitioner themselves. The use of the Dark Arts was also commonly linked with affiliation with wizarding supremacy and support of Dark wizards, [Lord Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and [Gellert Grindelwald](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/gellert-grindelwald). Although it was impossible to entirely defeat the Dark Arts young wizards were taught how to recognise it and [defend themselves](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/defence-against-the-dark-arts) against Dark magic.

Though incredibly clever, she proved herself a true [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) time and time again, using her courage as well as problem-solving skills in the face of danger, proving vital in the struggle against [Lord Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort). As Hermione says herself: “Books! And cleverness! There are more important things - friendship and bravery..."

Cornish Pixie Fact File Body Text

Electric blue, flying creatures, pixies are known for their mischievous natures and delight in playing pranks and causing havoc. Pixies are native to the South West of England, particularly Cornwall. Reaching up to eight inches in height, pixies do not have wings but are able to fly and carry great weights. Indeed they have been know to seize humans by the ears despite their miniature size, depositing them on top of trees, buildings and other out-of-reach places. Poor [Neville Longbottom](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) experienced this first hand.

A celebrity author who had written many popular books before he joined [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) as a [Defence Against the Dark Arts](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/defence-against-the-dark-arts) teacher in [Harry's](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter) second year, Lockhart was popular for his good looks, charm and fantastic stories. However, in the classroom it soon became clear that his experience and knowledge didn't quite match up to his extravagant claims.
