Dark Arts Fact File Body Text

Dark Arts referred to any magic that was mainly used to control, harm or kill its target. Brewing harmful potions, using hexes and curses, and breeding dark creatures could be illegal, not only because of the terrible consequences of using it but also for the corrupting nature of the practice which affected the practitioner themselves. The use of the Dark Arts was also commonly linked with affiliation with wizarding supremacy and support of Dark wizards, [Lord Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and [Gellert Grindelwald](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/gellert-grindelwald). Although it was impossible to entirely defeat the Dark Arts young wizards were taught how to recognise it and [defend themselves](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/defence-against-the-dark-arts) against Dark magic.

Located in a huge sprawling castle in the Scottish highlands, the celebrated school of witchcraft and wizardry taught its young students how to finesse their magical skills. Defence Against the Dark Arts Fact File Body Text

A required class taught at [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Defence Against the Dark Arts taught students how to defend themselves against all aspects of the [Dark Arts](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dark-arts) including curses, hexes, jinxes and studying Dark magical creatures. There was rumoured to be a jinx on the Hogwarts teaching position as professors didn't tend to last more than a year in the post. During [Harry Potter](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter)'s time at the school, his professors included [Quirinus Quirrell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/quirinus-quirrell), [Remus Lupin](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/remus-lupin), [Gilderoy Lockhart](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/gilderoy-lockhart) and [Alastor "Mad Eye" Moody](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/alastor-mad-eye-moody). However, in later years, less favourable teachers would teach this class in very different ways.

Harry Potter was prophesied to be the downfall of [Lord Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and therefore singled out at birth as the Dark Lord's rival. He was known in the wizarding world as 'The Boy Who Lived' after becoming the only known survivor of [the Killing Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-killing-curse), which was attempted by Voldemort when Harry was just a baby, after both his parents were murdered. But despite causing one of the most famous wizarding world events, Harry did not know he was a wizard until his eleventh birthday, due to his Muggle aunt and uncle neglecting to tell him. He would eventually go on to Hogwarts, discover his magical potential, and embark upon several great adventures with his best friends, [Ron](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/ron-weasley) and [Hermione](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hermione-granger).

Charms Fact File Body Text

Charms was a required class taught at [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It was compulsory until O.W.L. but useful for most careers to continue up to N.E.W.T. Similarly to [Transfiguration](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/transfiguration), Charms allowed a more creative approach to magic, where students learnt to levitate objects ([Wingardium Leviosa](/fact-file/spells/the-levitation-charm)), summon things ([Accio](/fact-file/spells/the-summoning-charm)) or simply make their [wand](/fact-file/objects/wand) light up ([Lumos](/fact-file/spells/the-wand-lighting-charm)). Taught by [Professor Flitwick](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/filius-flitwick) in Harry's time at Hogwarts, this class was unpredictable - as part of the first-year exam, for example, Flitwick's class were asked to magically persuade a pineapple to dance off a desk! This didn't stop [Hermione Granger](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hermione-granger) somehow getting a hundred and twelve per cent on that exam, however.

Ravenclaw Fact File Body Text

Ravenclaw was one of four [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) houses and prized students whose focus was on learning, wit and wisdom. This reflected the nature of their founder, [Rowena Ravenclaw](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rowena-ravenclaw) who was known to be a woman of remarkable diligence and intelligence. [The Ravenclaw common room](/fact-file/locations/the-ravenclaw-common-room) was decorated with the house colours of blue and bronze along with their eagle emblem. The students were able to study hard in the rooms that were full of tables and bookcases, although if they were unable to solve the bronze knocker’s riddle they couldn't get in until someone arrived who could!

The phoenix is a rare but powerful magical bird, able to burst into flames and be reborn from the ashes. As a result, they can live to a very old age. Resplendent in crimson and gold, phoenixes have tails as long as a peacock with feathers that glow faintly in the dark. In the wild, phoenixes can be found on mountain peaks but they can also in rare cases, be domesticated, making very loyal pets. [Albus Dumbledore's](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) pet phoenix, [Fawkes](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/fawkes) demonstrated these qualities along with the ability to cure injuries with his tears and to carry huge weights.

The Memory Charm Fact File Body Text

The strength of the Obliviate spell depends on the caster but in some cases memory can be so thoroughly destroyed that a witch or a wizard may lose all sense of who they are. When used properly, the spell can be put to great use, particularly in modifying the memories of [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) who happen upon evidence of the wizarding world. The charm was a speciality of [Gilderoy Lockhart](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/gilderoy-lockhart). [Hermione](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hermione-granger) also demonstrated mastery of the spell when she used it to protect her parents.
