Occasionally, children were born to Muggle families with magical abilities. These Muggle-born children might be the first of their family to ever exhibit any skills in magic, but were largely accepted by the wizarding world to be of equal talent and worth. Hermione Granger was one witch to prove that students could be of remarkable ability without any magical heritage. Sadly, some wizards and witches only valued "pure blood" were prejudiced towards Muggle-borns, and the derogatory term "Mudblood" was used to insult them.
