Dark Arts Fact File Body Text

Dark Arts referred to any magic that was mainly used to control, harm or kill its target. Brewing harmful potions, using hexes and curses, and breeding dark creatures could be illegal, not only because of the terrible consequences of using it but also for the corrupting nature of the practice which affected the practitioner themselves. The use of the Dark Arts was also commonly linked with affiliation with wizarding supremacy and support of Dark wizards, [Lord Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and [Gellert Grindelwald](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/gellert-grindelwald). Although it was impossible to entirely defeat the Dark Arts young wizards were taught how to recognise it and [defend themselves](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/defence-against-the-dark-arts) against Dark magic.

The Ministry of Magic is the London-based government headquarters for the British magical community. Accessed through an abandoned red telephone box the Ministry can be reached by dialling 62442 (which spells 'MAGIC' on an alphanumeric keypad). Departments include Magical Law Enforcement and the Department of Mysteries as well as the more pedestrian, Magical Transportation.

A required class taught at [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Defence Against the Dark Arts taught students how to defend themselves against all aspects of the [Dark Arts](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dark-arts) including curses, hexes, jinxes and studying Dark magical creatures. There was rumoured to be a jinx on the Hogwarts teaching position as professors didn't tend to last more than a year in the post. During [Harry Potter](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter)'s time at the school, his professors included [Quirinus Quirrell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/quirinus-quirrell), [Remus Lupin](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/remus-lupin), [Gilderoy Lockhart](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/gilderoy-lockhart) and [Alastor "Mad Eye" Moody](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/alastor-mad-eye-moody). Slytherin Fact File Body Text

Slytherin was one of the four [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) houses and was characterised by its silver and green colours and serpent emblem. The [Slytherin common room ](/fact-file/locations/the-slytherin-common-room)was located in the castle's [dungeons](/fact-file/locations/the-dungeons). Founded by [Salazar Slytherin](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/salazar-slytherin), the students sent to Slytherin were representative of his preference for characters defined by cunning, pride and ambition. Alas, Salazar's anti-Muggle stance and belief that Hogwarts should be for [pure-blooded](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/pure-blood) students only gave the house a poor reputation. Suspicions about the house's connections to the [Dark Arts](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dark-arts) were hard to dispel, particularly as it was the house of Lord Voldemort and boasted a number of [Death Eaters](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/death-eaters) and their children. However, Slytherin had a lot of members that contradicted this reputation. For instance, renowned wizard Merlin reigned from Slytherin, and some of the future generations, such as [Draco Malfoy](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/draco-malfoy)'s son [Scorpius](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/scorpius-malfoy), proved that you could be a Slytherin and still be kind.

Phoenix Fact File Body Text

The phoenix is a rare but powerful magical bird, able to burst into flames and be reborn from the ashes. As a result, they can live to a very old age. Resplendent in crimson and gold, phoenixes have tails as long as a peacock with feathers that glow faintly in the dark. In the wild, phoenixes can be found on mountain peaks but they can also in rare cases, be domesticated, making very loyal pets. [Albus Dumbledore's](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) pet phoenix, [Fawkes](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/fawkes) demonstrated these qualities along with the ability to cure injuries with his tears and to carry huge weights.

Cornelius Fudge was the Minister for Magic for six years, during which time he was involved in many incidents, including the escape of [Sirius Black](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sirius-black) from [Azkaban](/fact-file/locations/azkaban), Harry blowing up his Aunt Marge and a violent [Hippogriff](/fact-file/creatures/hippogriff).
