Even if you know all about Remus’s skills as a [Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/ten-times-remus-lupin-made-us-wish-he-was-our-teacher), his son Teddy and his love for Tonks, did you know these other facts about Moony?

## 1. His name has wolf origins 

A sneaky nod to Lupin’s status as a werewolf, the name ‘Remus’ comes from Roman mythology. In the story, ‘Remus’ was raised by wolves along with his brother, Romulus. If the brother’s name also sounds familiar, it’s because that’s the name Lupin went by while speaking anonymously on *Potterwatch* in *Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.* Clever, clever.

This isn’t the only hint of Remus’s [lycanthropic](https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/werewolves) tendencies, as his surname, ‘Lupin’, comes from the Latin word ‘lupus’, meaning wolf. Since the novels were published, J.K. Rowling has also revealed that Lupin’s father’s name was ‘Lyall’ which originates from the Old Norse word ‘Liulfr’, once again meaning wolf. Yep, Remus’s dad’s name literally translates to ‘wolf wolf’!

## 2. Remus hated his Patronus 

Although Lupin taught Harry how to cast a Patronus spell, we never actually saw what shape his own spell took, only that Tonks’s changed to a wolf after falling in love with him. According to [J.K. Rowling’s Pottermore entry on Remus](https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/remus-lupin), his Patronus was a normal wolf, not a werewolf, due to their non-threatening and family-orientated nature. However, since Lupin hated all things wolf, he shied away from casting corporeal Patronuses, instead opting to produce non-corporeal ones.

She wrote: ‘Remus dislikes the form of his Patronus, which is a constant reminder of his affliction. Everything wolfish disgusts him, and he often produces a non-corporeal Patronus deliberately, especially when others are watching.’

## 3. Lupin was turned when he was only four years old 

Remus was turned by [Fenrir Greyback](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/why-fenrir-greyback-was-the-creepiest-villain-in-the-harry-potter-books), who sought revenge on his father for his unkind words about the werewolf community. The attack took place just before his fifth birthday, and although Lyall burst in and saved his son from death, the attack left Remus as a werewolf himself. 

## 4. He was afraid of the full moon 

Although Lupin had lived with being a werewolf since he was four, he was still afraid of having to transform every month, which was revealed through his Boggart. When teaching his Defence Against the Dark Arts class on how to defeat the creature which turned into a person’s worst fear, Harry mistook Lupin’s Boggart for an ‘orb’, while Lavender later commented that he was afraid of crystal balls.

## 5. Lupin was awarded the Order of Merlin, First Class 

Lupin was awarded the [highest honour](/writing-by-jk-rowling/order-of-merlin "Order of Merlin by J.K. Rowling") that can be bestowed among a witch or wizard thanks to his efforts in the Battle of Hogwarts. He was the first werewolf to ever be given the award, and his tale helped to lift the stigma surrounding the [condition](/writing-by-jk-rowling/illness-and-disability "Illness and Disability by J.K. Rowling"), which previously left werewolves cast out by their fellow wizards.

## 6. He was not without flaw 

Although he will always be one of our favourites, Lupin wasn’t completely perfect. In a conversation with Stephen Fry at the Royal Albert Hall back in 2003, J.K. Rowling said: ‘Lupin’s failing is he likes to be liked. That’s where he slips up – he’s been disliked so often he’s always pleased to have friends, so cuts them an awful lot of slack.’ 

This would explain Lupin’s actions in *Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,* when he alone realised how Sirius Black managed to escape from Azkaban and how he could enter Hogwarts without detection, but was too afraid to tell Dumbledore the truth: 

> Lupin’s face had hardened, and there was self-disgust in his voice. ‘All this year, I have been battling with myself, wondering whether I should tell Dumbledore that Sirius was an Animagus. But I didn’t do it. Why? Because I was too cowardly. It would have meant admitting that I’d betrayed his trust while I was at school, admitting that I’d led others along with me ... and Dumbledore’s trust has meant everything to me.’

## 7. His parents met thanks to a Boggart 

One of our favourite moments from the books was when Lupin helped his class fight against a Boggart, revealing the worst fears of several characters including Neville (Professor Snape), Ron (spiders, of course), and Parvati (a mummy). So it seems like a nice touch that Remus’s parents actually met through a Boggart themselves. 

According to J.K. Rowling’s writing, Lyall met the Muggle, Hope Howell, after she mistook a Boggart for an attacker, and let her believe that he saved her from a dangerous man before admitting the truth a few months later. The pair even ended up having a Boggart-topped wedding cake, adorable!

## 8. J.K. Rowling almost spared Remus 

J.K. Rowling once revealed that she hadn’t [initially planned to kill Remus](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/harry-potter-characters-jk-rowling-nearly-killed-and-the-ones-shes-sorry-she-did) at the Battle of Hogwarts, but didn’t have a choice after giving Arthur Weasley a reprise when he was attacked at the Ministry. She tweeted: ‘Once again, it's the anniversary of the [Battle of Hogwarts](/features/battle-of-hogwarts-timeline "The Battle of Hogwarts timeline") so, as promised, I shall apologise for a death. This year: Remus Lupin. In the interests of total honesty I’d also like to confess that I didn’t decide to kill Lupin until I wrote *Order of the Phoenix.* Arthur lived, so Lupin had to die.’

[Remus Lupin](/features/remus-lupin) is probably one of the most beloved characters of the Harry Potter series, and although the character had his ups and downs, us readers liked him more or less from the very first moment we were introduced to him in *Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.*

The immediate offering of chocolate was an easy way to realise Lupin was a great man. However, there was one chapter in particular that confirmed that he was to become a firm favourite. Let’s return to book three, chapter eight: ‘Flight of the Fat Lady’...

From our very first meeting with Lupin on the [Hogwarts Express](/features/hogwarts-express), he was a character of intrigue. Fast asleep with his battered suitcase, it wasn’t long before Lupin sprung into action to save Harry and his friends, who had joined his compartment, against the unexpected Dementors. Immediately, this shabby-looking, tired man turned our expectations on their head.

> ‘Professor Lupin stepped over you, and walked towards the Dementor, and pulled out his wand,’ said Hermione. ‘And he said, “None of us is hiding Sirius Black under our cloaks. Go.” But the Dementor didn’t move, so Lupin muttered something, and a silvery thing shot out of his wand at it, and it turned round and sort of glided away…’”<br>

Indeed, the fact that Lupin knew exactly how to get rid of this new evil before dishing out chocolate was a sure sign that he was a [Defence Against the Dark Arts](/features/the-ultimate-defence-against-the-dark-arts-quiz) professor worth his salt, particularly when Madam Pomfrey praised his actions after fussing over Harry when they arrived at Hogwarts. Gilderoy Lockhart or Professor Quirrell, he was not.

And this was only the beginning of Lupin’s turn as Harry’s most impressive Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher.

Early in the chapter we quickly learned that, despite Malfoy’s disdain, Lupin was clearly brilliant at his new job, and it wasn’t long before he earned the respect of (almost) all of his students. 

> ‘Look at the state of his robes,’ Malfoy would say in a loud whisper as Professor Lupin passed. ‘He dresses like our old house-elf.’
> But no one else cared that Professor Lupin’s robes were patched and frayed. His next few lessons were just as interesting as the first. After Boggarts, they studied Red Caps, nasty little goblin-like creatures that lurked wherever there had been bloodshed, in the dungeons of castles and the potholes of deserted battlefields, waiting to bludgeon those who had got lost.<br>

But it wasn’t until Harry spent his first real bit of quality time with Lupin that we realised how important Lupin’s role was to Harry, and to the story. He wasn’t just a cool teacher, he was a huge part of Harry’s father’s history. And Lupin was quick to bond with his best friend’s son. After Ron and Hermione reluctantly went to [Hogsmeade](/features/hogsmeade) without Harry, who wasn’t allowed to go thanks to some permission form ‘issues’ (thanks a bunch, Uncle Vernon) Lupin spotted him and immediately realised that something wasn’t quite right. A cup of tea and a chat quickly followed – just what Harry needed. Bless.

From there, not only did Lupin cheer Harry up about Hogsmeade, he also taught him that his fear of the soul-sucking prison guards was nothing to be ashamed of, but was in fact a fear of fear itself. And Harry definitely needed this pep-talk, after a bit of a confidence knock in Lupin’s [Boggart](/features/boggarts) lesson when he didn’t get the chance to face the creature in the wardrobe. Soon enough, Lupin’s gentle wisdom and logic made him realise why: he was worried the Boggart might have turned into Lord Voldemort. Always a bit of a downer.

> ‘I did think of Voldemort first,’ said Harry honestly. ‘But then I – I remembered those Dementors.’
> ‘I see,’ said Lupin thoughtfully. ‘Well, well ... I’m impressed.’ He smiled slightly at the look of surprise on Harry's face. ‘That suggests that what you fear most of all is – fear. Very wise, Harry.’ Harry didn’t know what to say to that, so he drank some more tea.<br>

Note that Lupin never talked down to Harry, only a third-year at the time. He treated his students with understanding and respect – the markings of a great teacher. 

## ‘Voldemort’

If we needed any more evidence that Lupin was definitely the right man for the Defence Against the Dark Arts job, it was that he said Voldemort’s name aloud to Harry, something that many other respectable witches and wizards are terrified of doing. At this point, it was the first time Harry heard someone use the name besides himself and [Dumbledore](/features/how-to-live-like-albus-dumbledore), which certainly earned Harry’s respect (and ours)! Again, using the name saw Lupin treat Harry as an adult and as an equal. 

In this chapter, the atmosphere changed suddenly when Severus Snape arrived during their talk to give Lupin a potion, which we now know helped him to keep his human mind when transforming into a werewolf. It must have taken Lupin everything to have treated Snape with courtesy and respect after how much Snape hated his group at school, especially since Snape clearly still held a grudge against him. Harry even gave Lupin the perfect opportunity to speak badly about Snape when he warned him that Snape wanted the Defence Against the Dark Arts post, which Lupin politely (but promptly) ignored.

> ‘I’ve been feeling a bit off-colour,’ he said. ‘This potion is the only thing that helps. I am very lucky to be working alongside Professor Snape; there aren’t many wizards who are up to making it.’<br>

Lupin went out of his way to make sure Harry was okay right from the off, treating him as a friend as well as a student. Of course, it’s no surprise that [James Potter’s](/features/james-potter) best friend would want to bond with his son, but the way Lupin talked with Harry in this moment showed a genuine interest in Harry himself. 

Instead of trying to replace James with Harry, as perhaps [Sirius Black](/features/sirius-black) tried to do on occasion, Lupin only very briefly revealed to Harry that he had been friends with his father at school, and even then he quickly drew attention back to the matter at hand. It could have been so easy for him to have acted on a more selfish impulse and treated him like a son, but Harry needed him as a teacher first and foremost, and that was exactly how Lupin acted. 

A small act perhaps, but this chapter showed all of the many reasons Lupin was a complete an utter hero, just a very gentle and softly-spoken one preferring a cuppa over combat.

## 1) When he gave chocolate to Harry on the train to help him recover and wards off the Dementor

Although Lupin’s entrance on the Hogwarts Express is not a flashy one, (he’s asleep and “rather shabby looking”), his first actions are very impressive. Not only does he calmly deal with the dreaded Dementors, he gives a traumatised Harry some chocolate because of its healing powers. To quote Madame Pomfrey, “We’ve finally got a Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher who knows his remedies.” Mind you, if we’d been given a Chocolate Frog every time we had a headache at school, instead of a cold compress, we would have never had left the nurse’s room!

## 2) When he stuck up for Neville in front of Snape

It’s very rare to see people being nice to Neville because so often he’s the butt of everyone’s jokes or being horrendously tortured by Snape, so we all cheered when Lupin not only defended Neville but praised him after Snape’s casual bullying comments about Neville’s capabilities. There is a great parallel between laughter defeating both Boggarts and bullies - the rebel in Lupin encourages his class to laugh at Boggart Snape, trussed up and stuffed into Mrs Longbottom’s stuffed vulture outfit, taking the sting out of his tail in Neville’s eyes, for a little while at least.

## 3) When he gave all of us our first, decent, practical DADA lesson!

After Quirrell and Lockhart, it is such a relief to have a teacher who actually knows how to repel dark, magical creatures, and we finally get to meet some of them - the first lesson with the Boggart is so exciting because we get a little peek at everyone’s deepest fears (and mummies, banshees and severed hands are all pretty terrifying), while learning how to combat those fears. No wonder Lupin’s lessons soon become the most popular in the school. All together now...Riddikulus!

## 4) When he taught Harry how to repel Dementors

Having extra lessons is never much fun but learning something that is literally life-saving definitely beats having to figure out quadratic equations after school. Not only does Lupin make it explicitly clear that Harry’s stomach-churning experience with Dementors is not a weakness when Harry pops in for a cuppa, but his patience during Patronus practice really does save Harry’s life when he sees himself almost succumbing to the Dementor’s kiss across the lake. These extra-curricular classes also lay the groundwork for Harry’s future as the leader of Dumbledore’s Army. Lupin must have been incredibly proud of his former pupil when he heard the news that Harry was following in his footsteps with the DA.

## 5) When he told Harry he was disappointed in him after the Marauder's Map incident

Lupin’s admonishments to Harry are equally as important as his praise. Harry has such a deep respect for his teacher so the moment when Lupin makes Harry squirm by questioning his eagerness to gamble away his parents’ sacrifice has a far greater impact than any telling off by Snape. Poor Harry - disappointing Lupin would be the worst feeling in the world. Even when Sirius and Lupin are reminiscing about James with Harry’s head in the fire, Sirius clearly remembers Lupin’s ability to make him feel ashamed of himself at school. His good opinion clearly carries a lot of weight.

## 6) When he made an exam into an engaging obstacle course

One of Lupin’s greatest achievements at Hogwarts was making the dreaded end-of-year exam into a fun and thrilling obstacle course, involving battling Grindylows, Hinkypunks and Boggarts, all of which come in very useful for Harry during his next year at Hogwarts during the Triwizard Tournament. The care and effort that Lupin puts into inspiring his pupils at a time that would normally be horribly stressful is worth celebrating as is the fact that it also marks the very memorable occasion when Harry beat Hermione in a test.

## 7) When he and Sirius gave Harry books on how to teach practical defensive magic

This is possibly the only time when Harry is excited to receive books that aren’t about Quidditch. It’s an incredibly useful and thoughtful present from two of the most important men in Harry’s life - not only are the books invaluable to Harry’s teaching DADA but the fact that it’s a present from his own, (favourite) teacher emphasises that Lupin fully supports him in his rebellion against Umbridge and this encouragement spurs Harry on in terms of confidence and teaching ability. When Harry muses about getting a Boggart for the DA to try out their Patronuses, he’s basically just channeling Lupin’s enthusiasm for lesson planning.

## 8) When he wisely cautioned Harry not to be blinded by his hatred of Snape

If there is a better lesson from a teacher, you’d be hard pushed to find it! Lupin being so magnanimous about Snape, even professing admiration and gratitude for his Wolfsbane potion is essentially a forerunner to Harry not only forgiving Snape but naming his son after his former enemy. One of Lupin’s strengths is the way he is able to see beyond ideas of good and bad, empathising with others, even trying to understand the actions of the werewolf who bit him. He teaches Harry to always look for the good in people, no matter how hard it is to find.

## 9) When he *almost* apologised to Harry on Potterwatch

It takes a big man and an even bigger teacher to admit to their mistakes, especially so publicly. Considering that the search for Horcruxes is THE most dangerous, frightening and isolating thing that Harry, Hermione and Ron undertake, the praise that Lupin - sorry, Romulus - gives Harry over the magical airwaves is a huge turning point. One of the worst moments in The Deathly Hallows (and there are many to choose from) is the argument that breaks out between Harry and Lupin over the unborn Teddy which threatens one of Harry’s last remaining ties to his father. This reconciliation is the boost we all needed.

## 10) When he asked Harry to be Teddy’s godfather

This tear-jerking moment is such a beautiful, concise way of solidifying all the years of mentoring and friendship between Lupin and Harry. It means so much to Harry (and all of us), because the role of godfather is a big deal. Harry’s own godfather, Sirius, was the closest thing he had to a father because of James’ tragic death. Although they don’t know it, Lupin is carving out a similar father-figure role for Harry, as he will die only a few months later, which makes this exhilarating exchange as bittersweet as they come. The trust and respect that Lupin shows towards his favourite pupil is huge and proves once again that he is one of the best teachers to ever pass through Hogwarts.

James Potter and Sirius Black are fan favourites in the Harry Potter world. Their confidence and rebelliousness made them the subject of many a fan’s idle daydreaming about what Hogwarts would have been like before Harry Potter’s time.

Remus has always been a bit underrated. He was more reserved, bookish and quiet than James or Sirius, but here’s why we think he was actually the best Marauder.

## He was genuinely kind 

In the film *Prisoner of Azkaban* (2004), Remus told Harry that his mother Lily was ‘uncommonly kind’ – but the same could be said of him, too. 

Time and time again, Remus displayed how thoughtful, caring and compassionate he was. During one of his first lessons as Defence Against the Dark Arts professor at Hogwarts, Snape couldn’t help but make a disparaging and cruel remark about Neville Longbottom. Remus tactfully stood up for Neville, leaving Snape speechless.

> ‘Possibly no one’s warned you, Lupin, but this class contains Neville Longbottom. I would advise you not to entrust him with anything difficult. Not unless Miss Granger is hissing instructions in his ear.’

Remus always stuck up for the underdog. Perhaps it was the wolf in him; they are pack animals, after all. 

## He knew what it was like to be an outsider 

In Remus’s early years, he and his parents Lyall and Hope were always on the move and never settled in one place for too long. After Remus was attacked, and his monthly transformations became more dangerous, the family did everything to protect their son from detection – which also meant not letting anyone get too close. 

When Remus was invited to Hogwarts, he discovered for the first time in his life what it was like to have friends. However, Remus never forgot what loneliness felt like and showed more sympathy to outsiders than either James or Sirius.

While James and Sirius took a certain kind of pleasure in tormenting Severus Snape during their Hogwarts years, Remus avoided joining in with his friends’ bullying behaviour. Dumbledore even made Remus a prefect, perhaps in the hopes that he might be able to exert a bit more control over James and Sirius. While that didn’t exactly work out, it’s a testament to Remus’s strong sense of right and wrong that he never condoned what his friends did. 

## He believed in second chances 

When the Order of the Phoenix was reconvened in the fifth Harry Potter book, the old wounds from the Marauders’ era at Hogwarts were re-opened. Sirius and Snape, who hated each other as young adults, still regarded each other with animosity. Snape’s general popularity wasn’t helped – for obvious reasons – by the fact that the other members of the Order were aware that, for a time, he supported Voldemort.

Remus, despite knowing that Snape had his differences with James and Sirius, found it in himself to give Snape another chance. He knew that people could change and believed in giving people second chances – regardless of who they were or what they had done in the past. Dumbledore’s influence was clear. It was he who invited Remus to Hogwarts as a student in the first place, despite his lycanthropy. 

## He brought out the best in people 

Remus was pretty much good at everything. He received excellent grades during his time at Hogwarts, was made a prefect, helped create the incredibly detailed and magical Marauder’s Map, and could effortlessly cast a Patronus.

But beyond being a talented wizard, one of Remus’s greatest skills was helping others to realise their potential. He was considered by the students in Harry’s year at Hogwarts to be the best Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher they’d ever had (seeing as Mad-Eye Moody ended up being a Death Eater in disguise…). By the time Lupin left Hogwarts, Harry was casting advanced protective spells. Would Harry have ever become an Auror without Remus as a teacher? 

We shouldn’t forget to mention that the final exam Remus set for his students was an obstacle course. A+ Professor Lupin – or we should say, Outstanding!

## He would do anything to protect his loved ones 

When Remus left his wife, Nymphadora Tonks, and their newborn son Teddy to fight at the Battle of Hogwarts in *Deathly Hallows*, it was because he wanted to create a better future for his family. He wanted to protect his son from a world in which Voldemort was in power.

When Harry used the Resurrection Stone, the recently-departed Remus appeared among Harry’s lost loved ones. Remus spoke of his newborn son, telling Harry, ‘I am sorry too … Sorry I will never know him … but he will know why I died and I hope he will understand. I was trying to make a world in which he could live a happier life.’

## He still had that trademark Marauders wit 

James and Sirius may be thought of as the charming, nonchalant ones in the Marauders, but Remus was just as witty. When Professor Snape discovered Harry carrying the Marauders Map in *Prisoner of Azkaban*, he tried to command the blank parchment to reveal its secrets. In return, the map insulted Snape using Remus’s words – with more snark than one might expect from the mild-mannered professor: ‘Mr Moony presents his compliments to Professor Snape and begs him to keep his abnormally large nose out of other people’s business.’

And let’s not forget the time that Remus responded to Peeves singing ‘Loony, loopy Lupin’ by shooting a wad of chewing gum up his nose.

## He carried chocolate with him everywhere 

Finally, Remus was also the type of teacher who carried chocolate around with him, just in case any of his students needed a pick-me-up after an encounter with a Dementor. Another reason why he was simply the best.

What if Remus Lupin had never become a werewolf?

Remus Lupin is certainly one of the most beloved characters of the Harry Potter series. Good, principled, intelligent and kind – it is easy to understand why. Yet, Remus had to shoulder the huge burden of being a werewolf and the prejudice that came with that. The wizarding community – even those you would consider to be ‘good’ people – treated lycanthropes dreadfully, shunning and pushing them to the fringes of society. In fact, it was because of an uncharacteristically bigoted outburst by his father, Lyall Lupin, that Remus was attacked by Fenrir Greyback shortly before his fifth birthday. 

Lyall Lupin was a world-renowned authority on Non-Human Spiritous Apparitions (such as Boggarts and poltergeists). When Voldemort started to gain power, his Death Eaters recruited all manner of Dark creatures to help them with their bid to overthrow the Ministry of Magic. While many were still not aware that Lord Voldemort was behind the attacks, they did recognise that there had been more instances of Dark Magic. So, to tackle the threat the Ministry asked experts on Dark creatures to help them. 

Lyall was one of the people called in and joined the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. This is where he encountered Fenrir Greyback – who had been brought in for questioning about the murder of two Muggle children. Greyback denied being a werewolf and claimed to be a Muggle tramp. Lyall saw straight through him – and tried to tell the committee who just laughed at him. He grew angry that they wouldn’t listen and said that werewolves were ‘soulless, evil, deserving nothing but death’. 

Greyback was released and fled, but he remembered Lyall’s words and sought his revenge. When he climbed through Remus’s bedroom window and attacked him, Lyall was able to save Remus’s life, but the damage had been done and Remus would now be a werewolf. Lyall had to live with what he had said for the rest of his life and deeply regretted it. While he was sharing a widely held view, his words had consequences. His prejudice, and the reaction to it, was the reason Remus would be shunned by the wizarding community for the rest of his life.

## Would his personality have been different? 
There is no doubt that being a werewolf had an impact on some aspects of Remus’s personality. Throughout his childhood he had to move from place to place when people started to notice his drawn complexion and regular disappearances at the full moon. He also wasn’t able to make any friends in case he revealed his secret. While his parents, Lyall and Hope (a Muggle), were brilliant, loving and trying to protect him, the reality was Remus was a very lonely child who always had to remain on the outside. 

Things changed when Albus Dumbledore brought him to Hogwarts and he was able to make friend with James, Sirius and Peter, but he still had to hide who he was from the majority of his peers (who would probably not be so understanding). After Hogwarts and the death of James, apparent death of Peter and incarceration of Sirius, he was once again alone. The wizarding world continued to ostracise him, and he still had to live a solitary existence. Nobody can go through an experience like that and not be changed. His condition held him back from being able to fully embrace life and he couldn’t live up to his full potential. However, it didn’t make him bitter, and he was always known to look out for the underdog – whether it was Peter Pettigrew as a pupil or Neville Longbottom as a teacher. 

But would he have been like that anyway? Before Remus was attacked, he was still known to be loving and intelligent by his parents. With his compassionate nature, it is very likely that he still would have been kind and helpful towards his peers. He resisted the anger and hatred that many werewolves (understandably) felt towards their fellow wizards and didn’t allow his condition to become the only thing about him. Fenrir Greyback let his werewolf status embody his whole personality, in comparison.

However, his condition did lead him to want to fit in at any cost – even if it meant going along with things he knew to be wrong. Remus was always known to be the conscience of the Marauders, but he sometimes allowed them to get away with stuff he shouldn’t have, such as the bullying of Severus Snape, because he was grateful for their friendship. If he had not had to deal with the insecurity that came with being a werewolf and an outsider, he may have felt more confident in stopping James and Sirius when they acted out.

We think it is safe to say that while being a werewolf inevitably had an impact on Remus’s personality, it didn’t change his fundamental nature. The kind and intelligent boy grew up to be a kind and intelligent man – who was maybe a little more wary and identified with outsiders more quickly than if he had never become one himself.

## Would his friends have become unregistered Animagi?
It’s hard to believe that the four Marauders would never have become unregistered Animagi. Yet, it was purely because of Remus’s condition that they decided to undergo the arduous process in the first place. When they discovered in their second year the reason behind his monthly disappearances, they didn’t push him away or think differently of him. Instead, they realised they would be safe to be around him in animal form and so decided that he would never have to suffer through a full moon alone again. 

Knowing that, it is easy to believe that becoming Animagi would never have crossed their minds if it weren’t for the werewolf factor. But does that underestimate who the Marauders were? The four Gryffindors were known to be adventurous and push the boundaries throughout their entire time at Hogwarts. In fact, the only other students whose exploits and ability to cause mischief came close to them were the Weasley twins. It’s not hard to believe that the Marauders would have come to the decision to become Animagi in another way. Whether it was an attempt to make sneaking around the castle and grounds easier or something exciting to do because they were bored, we think it is definitely within the realm of possibility that they still would have taken that path.

## Would he have been a teacher at Hogwarts? 
When Albus Dumbledore tracked Lupin to a derelict cottage in Yorkshire and asked him to return to Hogwarts as a teacher, Lupin only accepted after he was told that an unlimited supply of Wolfsbane Potion (which restricted his transformation to that of an ordinary sleepy wolf) would be available to him, thanks to his old nemesis Snape. However, once he was at Hogwarts, he proved to be an incredibly talented teacher. He was definitely the best Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher that Harry ever had. Whether he was teaching how to banish a Boggart, helping Harry produce a Patronus or giving Neville the confidence to believe in himself, Lupin was a natural. 

Therefore, it is easy to believe that Lupin would have found his way into teaching anyway. His personality is certainly suited to the profession, and we can totally see him getting along famously with the other professors (maybe not Snape) without having to worry that they would discover his secret. In fact, if he had found his way back to Hogwarts to teach, we can imagine he would be the Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher that made it past one year. 

However, because of his condition, Remus had to live a very transient existence – moving from job to job and place to place. He always had to move on when people started noticing his pattern. He also had to take on work that was beneath his ability and had to sell himself short. Therefore, we don’t know what could have been in store for him if he had been able to live a more normal life. He might have followed in his father’s footsteps and taken a job at the Ministry of Magic for example. Teaching may never have been on his radar. However, we can’t help but feel that Lupin probably would have found his way back to Hogwarts. He was a born teacher, loved by (most of) his students and excellent at his job.

## Would Sirius's name have been cleared?
There are a couple of reasons why Remus’s lycanthropy contributed to Sirius being framed and then losing the opportunity to clear his name. If the Marauders hadn’t become Animagi in solidarity with Remus, then Peter Pettigrew would not have been able to spend thirteen years in hiding with the Weasleys – unless he found another way to fake his own death. But without this particular magical skill, it would’ve been a lot harder for him to hide his involvement with Lord Voldemort and frame Sirius for multiple murders. 

However, even if we do assume that the Marauders could still transform into animals, then it could have been possible that Sirius would have cleared his name if it weren’t for that fateful night in the school grounds. Remus’s full werewolf transformation provided Peter (the proof of Sirius’s innocence) with the perfect opportunity to escape. If Harry, Ron, Hermione and Sirius hadn’t been distracted with the danger Lupin presented then they might have been able to bring Pettigrew to Dumbledore and to justice.

Yet, even if Pettigrew had been brought before the Ministry of Magic, perhaps he would’ve still been able to spin a story about how Sirius Black was the villain and he had hidden in fear for his life. Bearing in mind how obstinate Cornelius Fudge could be, we reckon he might have believed him – or at least chosen to ¬– because facing the truth was never a strength of his. So, while Remus’s condition might have stopped Sirius from being able to present evidence of his innocence, there was no guarantee that it would have made a difference.

## Would he have opened his heart to Tonks sooner? 
Remus never viewed himself as someone who deserved to find happiness. In fact, if he had met Tonks during the period Voldemort had vanished, and if it wasn’t in the context of the Order of the Phoenix, he probably would have left the moment he realised he had feelings for her. 

Remus viewed himself as someone unworthy of love and that it would be incredibly selfish of him to pursue a relationship. He worried that he would condemn his partner to a life of moving around and unable to settle, just like it had been for his parents. Not to mention his concern about passing on his lycanthropy to any children he might have.

Though we think that this is one thing that could have changed if Remus hadn’t been a werewolf. We assume that he still would have been a member of the Order of the Phoenix and would have still met Tonks. He wouldn’t have had his concerns about his worthiness or selfishness and wouldn’t have felt like he had to hide his true feelings. The attraction between the two of them was undeniable and we reckon that wouldn’t have changed. We think Remus would have opened up his heart to her much more easily and quickly as a result. However, it does make us feel sad to think that they could have had longer together if it wasn’t for the barriers Remus had constructed.

When I was growing up, if I banged my knee or cut my hand, to stop myself from crying, I would think about all that Harry Potter had endured in his young life, telling myself that if Harry could survive several Dementor attacks, I could probably be brave about my twisted ankle. The characters of Harry Potter have always been people I could turn to for hope, inspiration and advice (it’s the reason I always check the ceiling for poltergeists), but as I’ve got older, the meanings of some conversations have become more layered.

A moment that has always been special and full of meaning is the exchange between Harry and Remus Lupin in *Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.*
You know the one. “It has nothing to do with weakness.” The words Harry longs and needs to hear, after years of grief, torment and loss. “It has nothing to do with weakness.” Lupin’s acknowledgment of the “horrors” in Harry’s past is such a simple, sigh-of-relief moment for Harry and for us. I think so many of us need to be told that the stress or worries that we feel regularly are not our fault and that we’re handling it in the best way that we can. Harry hasn’t been taught how to forgive himself or even how to like himself so of course, his natural instinct would be to blame himself, especially after a lifetime of bullying at the hands of the Dursleys. Lupin sees this and understands. Perhaps out of everyone Harry has met so far, Lupin understands him the most. As a small boy himself, his life was changed irrevocably when he was bitten by Fenrir Greyback, leading to a lifetime of being shunned and isolated. A couple of years after this chat with Harry, Lupin is still struggling to accept that anyone would be capable of loving him, despite Tonks making her feelings very clear. He doesn’t want to inflict the life he has had onto anybody else but it’s precisely these experiences that make him so perfectly placed to guide a lost and confused Harry.

There are so many times in Harry Potter’s life where his feelings of frustration, loneliness and heartache could have been relieved immeasurably by talking to someone. He, as do many of us, bottles up his feelings to the extent that he explodes at the people who mean the most to him. We see this happen over and over, where pride or embarrassment has overtaken his willingness to seek advice, so for him to actually reach out and ask, “why?” is such a simple but huge step - it’s one of the few times that he asks for help and luckily, Lupin steps up.

We know that in contrast to many of his classmates, Harry has had a tough life and as he has fewer, happy memories to protect him from the Dementors, his worst experiences come to the surface much quicker and with a far more damaging effect. Ron’s reaction to the Dementor on the train is a really good way of showing how different people deal with grief and stress. Ron has had a happy childhood and has never really experienced hardship at this point, certainly not compared to Harry but still, he thought he “would never feel cheerful again”. We’re all on a spectrum, nobody is immune to the effect of the Dementors, no matter how privileged or happy their lives have been. Remember Dudley? I have always wondered what he felt the night when he met the Dementors on a warm, summer’s evening. If anyone had a ‘charmed’ life, it was Diddikins, so did his years of endless torture of Harry come back to haunt him that night? Did the screams of the children he bullied ring in his ears? Who knows but I think of all the characters and creatures we meet in the wizarding world, the Dementors are perhaps the most terrifying because unlike werewolves or dragons or Basilisks, they don't cause physical suffering but they reflect and amplify emotional pain that already exists within their victims. And although a Patronus may banish the Dementors themselves, the memories and the trauma remain because they were always there to begin with and no balm or stitch or phoenix tear will make it better, but time and talking usually helps to heal.

There are so many parallels to be drawn between what witches and wizards hear when they are close to Dementors and that little voice in our head that keeps us awake at night, making us relive our most upsetting and embarrassing moments. Most people have felt that heavy cloud of despair descend, but it’s the people we turn to who offer us hope and help that we remember. Lupin makes it so easy for Harry to be honest, there’s no talk of being brave, or keeping his chin up or being a man. Instead, he says how wise it is to be fearful, which 20 years ago, was quite radical advice for a thirteen-year-old boy. He teaches Harry to recognise the Dementors for what they are - greedy, soulless, evil creatures - while also giving him the confidence and knowledge to fight back, by harnessing his happiest memories, another piece of advice I’ll be following from now on.
