## Luna Lovegood

If there was any Harry Potter character that reminds us that the world isn’t that bad, with silver linings always to be found, it’s Luna Lovegood. The kind and eccentric Ravenclaw may have been made fun of at Hogwarts (her nickname “Loony” leaps to mind) but Luna’s only crime was having an open mind. 

Her matter-of-fact attitude to some of the darker moments in her life were encouraging to read (and watch!) so that we always felt calm in Luna’s company. 

From talking about the death of her mother (“She was a quite extraordinary
witch, you know, but she did like to experiment...”) to having her possessions stolen by horrible Hogwarts students (“They’ll come back, they always do in the end...”) Luna could always see the bright side no matter what. 

*The lesson Luna teaches us: remember that things can and will get better.*

## Hermione Granger 

Hermione was always a logical thinker, which meant she often had wise, practical solutions to problems. Good thing she was friends with Harry Potter, then, who tended to have quite a few problems for her to help solve. 

Due to her incredible mind, Hermione reminds us that there’s always an answer to the many conundrums life throws at us, even if we can’t immediately think of the answer. 

Sure, Hermione got upset like all of us do, but she was always a tower of strength to her friends. For example, she was a dabhand at ignoring the catty comments of Draco Malfoy, while idle Hogwarts gossip about her was like water off a duck’s back. She was also very good at telling Harry and Ron to ignore the more minor irritations of life – always focusing on the things that were more important. 

The pivotal moment from the Harry Potter stories, which really showed us how much inner personal strength Hermione had, was during the camping trip of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, where Hermione was constantly on-hand to think of clever spells or words of encouragement during their search for Horcruxes. When Ron left the camp for a while, Hermione still managed to find the will to carry on, even when all hope seemed lost. This didn’t stop her from giving Ron a piece of her mind when he returned, though. And rightly so.

*The lesson Hermione teaches us: no hurdle is too big to overcome.*

## Arthur Weasley 

Good old Arthur Weasley never failed to put a smile on our faces when he turned up, always exuding a cheery disposition and easy-going attitude. If he wanted to, Arthur could’ve complained about a lot, such as his job not paying enough at the Ministry, or the unruliness of his sons Fred and George. But Arthur simply got on with it, and as a father of seven children, we were always impressed at his never-ending patience.

When Arthur was attacked during the events of *Order of the Phoenix*, we readers were deeply upset and worried about Ron’s dad – but thankfully – he was okay. In fact, in such good spirits was Arthur, that he even tried out Muggle stitches in the hospital for his injuries. 

That’s another thing we love about Arthur – he was always so welcoming of the Muggle community – although Mrs Wealsey was none-too-pleased about the Muggle stitches.

*The lesson Arthur teaches us: challenges in life come to all of us! It’s your choice how you react to them.*

## Scorpius Malfoy

When we first met Scorpius on the Hogwarts Express in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, we were surprised to learn that Draco Malfoy’s son was actually quite nice. Thank Merlin that Albus Potter, Harry’s middle-son, met him. Scorpius’s always upbeat and proud-to-be-geeky attitude was exactly the tonic that Albus needed to get through the challenges of Hogwarts life – always ready with a sarcastic comment or even a little song about sweets.

Scorpius would always have a clever quip about whatever perilous situation the pair found themselves in, and despite his nervous disposition, he always knew he would be OK with his best mate by his side. 

*The lesson Scorpius taught us: approaching life’s darker moments with a sense of humour can really help.*

## Dobby 

This list would not be complete without darling Dobby, so here he is! It took a while for Dobby to fully embrace the joys of life (being the Malfoy family’s house-elf for many years certainly didn’t help) but once he found his freedom, via the medium of a smelly sock, he was always around to give help to those who needed it. Particularly for Harry, Dobby always made sure he had what he needed, whether that was simply advice, or, you guessed it, more socks.

We won’t bring up Dobby’s emotional final moment too much, because we may well up while writing this. But always remember that Dobby’s selfless good deeds brought out the kindness of others in more ways than one.

*The lesson Dobby taught us: Spread a little joy to someone else’s life to find your own inner-joy.*

## Colin Creevey 

Our snap-happy Colin was a Hogwarts student bursting with enthusiasm, always around to document every magical moment. Born to Muggle parents, along with his brother Dennis, Colin just couldn’t believe his eyes when he joined Hogwarts, (who can blame him?) and Harry Potter quickly became his favourite subject. 

Colin’s positivity can be summed up, quite simply, by his reaction to his brother falling into the Great Lake.

‘Colin, I fell in!’ he said shrilly, throwing himself into an empty seat. ‘It was brilliant! And something in the water grabbed me and pushed me back in the boat!’
‘Cool!’ said Colin, just as excitedly. ‘It was probably the giant squid, Dennis!’<br>

## Newt Scamander 

We finish off with our hero from *Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them*, Magizoologist supreme Newt Scamander. [Newt’s shyness made him an unlikely hero](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/why-newt-scamander-is-a-different-kind-of-hero), but his respect for magical creatures and gentle nature simply revealed how patient and just he was in other walks of life. 

We also saw this attitude when he met Jacob Kowalski, being sure to treat a No-Maj like his equal – something that some wizards (especially in the 1920s) struggled to do. 

This open-minded nature and compassionate manner shouldn’t come as a surprise: Newt is, after all, a Hufflepuff. 

Our favourite quote from Newt that perfectly sums up his way of thinking about things? “My philosophy is that worrying means you suffer twice.”

The wizarding world is crawling with creatures – some proud, some vindictive, some visible only to those who have witnessed death. They function as familiars, friends and foes. And some of them, it seems, are mainly there to mess with the nearest witch or wizard.

## Nifflers

These cute little diggers are the original mischief-makers. Their affinity for anything expensive makes them more dangerous than Dementors (if you care more about your watch than your soul). It makes sense that they’re adorable; it makes it much more likely that you’ll forgive them for raiding your jewellery box, robbing you blind, and destroying your house.

The Nifflers dived in and out of the patch of earth as though it was water, each scurrying back to the student who had released it and spitting gold into their hands. Ron’s was particularly efficient; it had soon filled his lap with coins.

>‘Can you buy these as pets, Hagrid?’ he asked excitedly, as his Niffler dived back into the soil, splattering his robes.

## Kreacher

House-elves as an entity aren’t exactly mischief-makers, interested as they are in serving – but the pages of Harry Potter are studded with diminutive tea-towel-clad rebels, and Kreacher is the most intent on causing trouble.

Alternately scattering Dungbombs, prowling after dark, and smuggling valuables in his loincloth, Kreacher’s deep love for his family resulted in plenty of problems for the new occupants of his domain.

There was the sound of pattering feet, a blaze of shining copper, an echoing clang and a shriek of agony: Kreacher had taken a run at Mundungus and hit him over the head with a saucepan.

>‘Call ’im off, call ’im off, ’e should be locked up!’ screamed Mundungus, cowering as Kreacher raised the heavy-bottomed pan again.

## Hedwig

Hedwig is a loyal friend and a reliable mail carrier, but she’s also got plenty of personality, which more often than not expresses itself in the form of non-verbal jokes. She nibbles ears, nips wrists and disapproves of tropical birds. She’s often present when Harry receives bad or worrying news (because she brings it, tied to her leg) and if he overreacts, she makes sure he knows, by cuffing him about the head with her wing.

Hedwig came fluttering down onto his shoulder, and held out her leg.

>‘I can’t use you,’ Harry told her, looking around for the school owls. ‘I’ve got to use one of these ...’

## Grindylows

There are degrees of mischief, and Grindylows sit further towards the murderous end, given their predilection for dragging witches and wizards down to watery deaths. But they’re small! Green! Cute!

>Harry twisted his body around and saw a Grindylow, a small, horned water demon, poking out of the weeds, its long fingers clutched tightly around Harry’s leg, its pointed fangs bared – Harry stuck his webbed hand quickly inside his robes and fumbled for his wand – by the time he had grasped it, two more Grindylows had risen out of the weed, had seized handfuls of Harry’s robes, and were attempting to drag him down.

## Nargles

The actual presence of Nargles is yet to be verified, but if Luna tells us that they infest mistletoe, then who are we to disbelieve her?

## Freshly caught Cornish Pixies

Gilderoy Lockhart was always a great lover of a mischievous wink, so it’s no surprise that he brought these blue-hued wreckers of havoc into the classrooms of Hogwarts.

Shockingly strong and good at working in teams, it didn’t take long for a cage full of the cobalt sprites to reduce a Defence Against the Dark Arts class to panic.

>It was pandemonium. The pixies shot in every direction like rockets. Two of them seized Neville by the ears and lifted him into the air. Several shot straight through the window, showering the back row with broken glass. The rest proceeded to wreck the classroom more effectively than a rampaging rhino. They grabbed ink bottles and sprayed the class with them, shredded books and papers, tore pictures from the walls, upended the waste bin, grabbed bags and books and threw them out of the smashed window; within minutes, half the class was sheltering under desks and Neville was swinging from the candelabra in the ceiling.

We love Luna for her quirky fashion choices, and when we met Xenophilius, her dad, we discovered that the apple did not fall far from the tree in that department. Look at this strange thatched number we see him wearing here. What is it?! Another of the wizarding world’s greatest mysteries.  

## Hermione’s turtleneck of anxiety

During Harry’s first task at the Triwizard Tournament, a worried Hermione sneaks into his tent to wish him good luck wearing a very cosy turtleneck. Because when you’re fretting if your best friend is about to be eaten by a dragon, it’s always important to be comfortable.

You thought it was a bit chilly at Hogwarts? Step forward, the class of Durmstrang, who turned up for the Triwizard Tournament looking like immaculate models ready for a long walk in Antarctica. The coats! The hats! The boots! The browns and greys and creams! Now, this is how you keep toasty and still catwalk-ready. Super-serious, yet super-snuggly.

From Durmstrang to Beauxbatons – and here is Madame Maxime in the most striking coat the world has ever seen. It’s always fun to get yourself a dressy coat for the winter months to feel both fluffy and fabulous - and especially fun if that coat could also double-up as a magic eye optical illusion.

There’s nothing we hate more than red raw ears on a frosty day, so be sure to invest in a pair of earmuffs. In the wizarding world, fluffy earmuffs also double-up as a life-saving accessory that quietens the sound of screaming Mandrakes, who are known for their fatal cries. We love a piece of headwear with dual purpose! 

## Pink poncho of horrors

Dolores Umbridge strikes again. If it wasn’t enough that the short-lived Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher caused general despair among the students of Hogwarts during her tenure, she also delighted in wearing an array of pastel pink atrocities to further upset us. We include this choice not to appreciate it, but just to simply observe that it somehow exists.

## Neville: a wizard of many layers

We all know Neville loves to layer up in the colder months ([we have commented passionately on his choice of sweater vests before](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/an-appreciation-of-harry-potter-knitwear-web)) and here he is employing his Gryffindor-esque bravery by wearing *three* different patterns at once.

The checkered inlay of the coat, the lovely stripey Hogwarts scarf, and a fleece with *different stripes* on underneath! A bold choice for a character that would one day take on Lord Voldemort in a lovely knitted cardie. 

And, finally, a special shoutout to....

You know on those lazy Sunday afternoons where you spend so long sitting on the armchair, you feel like you have become the armchair? Try telling that to Professor Slughorn, who quite literally turned into the piece of furniture to avoid talking to Albus Dumbledore one time. His pink, striped dressing gown even matched the armchair’s look.

Surely, when it comes to winter-time cosiness, nobody can defeat this incredibly dedicated attempt to achieve pure comfy zen.

Dumbledore, McGonagall and Snape’s Patronuses to be released as Funko Pop! figures

Our new, upcoming Patronus figures (as revealed this week at the Funko Fair) are cast by two iconic Hogwarts professors, the very two that Harry Potter named his son after, in fact. 

Albus Dumbledore’s Patronus emulates his trusty sidekick Fawkes, taking the shape of a phoenix, while Severus Snape’s Patronus has particular emotional impact – it is a doe, the same as Lily Potter’s.

These ghostly guardians have been reimagined as Funko Pop! figures, which you’ll soon be able to collect (available while stocks last!) and maybe add to your existing collection. In the past, you’ll remember that we released Harry, Ron and Hermione’s Patronuses as adorable Funko Pop! figures too.

These new mosaic-style interpretations of the Hogwarts house crests, created with over 4000 pieces of LEGO, should inspire master builders and Harry Potter fans alike. Created by LEGO designer Kitt Kossmann, the four house crests and the main Hogwarts school crest have been reimagined as 2D wall art, now available to purchase from [LEGO’s official website for you to build yourself.](https://www.lego.com/en-us/themes/art/harry-potter)

These special sets come alongside a LEGO Art soundtrack to listen to as you build, featuring creatives from the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts films. Fans can scan a special QR code on their sets to discover this. Speakers include the graphic design team MinaLima, Creative Director Alan Gilmore and Head Prop Maker Pierre Bohanna, who were all deeply involved in the creative nuances of the wizarding world that you see in every movie.

LEGO Art Harry Potter Hogwarts Crests

Designer Kitt Kossmann, who also speaks on the LEGO Art soundtrack, spoke to us about the meticulous process working on these special Wizarding World designs.   

‘I was already a big Harry Potter fan when I was given the task to create the four house crests and the ultimate Hogwarts crest,’ she said. ‘My children grew up with Harry Potter and I have read the books several times. The movies are our family’s go-to entertainment whenever we fell like having a movie marathon.’ 

And how did Kitt acquire the stoic patience to create such detailed interpretations of these iconic Harry Potter symbols?

‘I don´t really see it as patience because I hardly ever get bored by making LEGO ART,’ Kitt told us. ‘I have a picture inside my head of what I want to accomplish and if I can´t achieve that I get a bit frustrated. I pretty much work with pixels in the same way as when I paint a painting and it is important to step away from the image occasionally, to get the full picture. It is very easy to fall in love with small details and forget about the rest.’ 

‘It took me about 4 months from when I started the task to when I had finished all the models.’

As for each individual crest, Kitt said she found the Hufflepuff badger the biggest challenge of the four.

’Surprisingly, the badger in the Hufflepuff crest turned out to be quite a challenge. It was very hard to get the face, the very low body, and the tail right within the pixels I had available. My first attempts look like a dog and it took several days, before I got it right!’ 

Coincidentally, Kitt considers herself a Hufflepuff (‘I am a dedicated, friendly, caring, and emphatic person’) but loved working on the execution of all four houses.

‘My favorite part of the project was when I had to experiment with different variations of the house crests to find an execution that felt modern but still had all the right content to be recognised immediately as Harry Potter House Crests.’ 

‘All houses are equally important, and they need each other.’

We couldn’t agree more.
