Design team MinaLima got together with Scholastic to answer “nine and three quarter questions” about their craft in the Wizarding World. Watch the video here and find some new sneak peeks of their illustrations for Chamber of Secrets.

Join Miraphora Mina and Eduardo Lima as they speak to Scholastic about some of their favourite pieces and biggest challenges from illustrating the second book.

MinaLima are certified experts on Harry Potter, having worked their magic across all eight films, and now designing new creations for Fantastic Beasts. But beyond the films, MinaLima also set their talents to book illustrating – and what better books to illustrate than the ones they know so well, already?

This October, MinaLima will be releasing their beautiful illustrated version of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, following on from their work on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Once again, the team, led by Miraphora Mina and Eduardo Lima, have created fully realised moments from the second Harry Potter adventure, from the luscious greens of the Slytherin common room to the colourful topsy-turvy structure of The Burrow. And watch out for some fun pop-outs and interactive elements across certain pages!

Now, take a look inside at some of the new spreads you can expect to see from this upcoming book.

The Slytherin Common Room

When it came to imagining the Slytherin common room, Miraphora explained that “you need a bit of darkness and a bit of intrigue” for it, which we can certainly here. This moment comes when Harry and Ron must somehow sneak their way into the common room to extract information from Malfoy, entering a room bathed in green lighting and snakelike details.

The Burrow

In the books, The Burrow is known as the chaotic home of the Weasley family, built with many storeys precariously balanced on top of each other, thanks to a bit of magic. “The Burrow is just full of sense of humour and colour and life,” Miraphora said. “We want people to spend time in there and discover things.”

The greenhouse

Professor Sprout’s greenhouses are an integral location in the second book, with Harry and his classmates learning how to pot Mandrakes. In this image, we love the meticulous details on every pair of fluffy earmuffs that the classmates must wear to protect themselves from the Mandrake’s fatal screams.

The library

MinaLima namechecked the bountiful Hogwarts library as one of their favourites to illustrate in this book. “We want to give the reader the same details that we’d be curious about ourselves,” Miraphora said, when it came to designing this very layered piece.

The MinaLima Edition of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is coming out on hardback on 26th October and will be released by Scholastic in the US and Bloomsbury in the UK.
