After the West End production won big at the Olivier Awards last year, the Broadway production of Cursed Child has now been nominated for 10 Tony Awards following its Opening in New York last month.
Cursed Child has been honoured by the esteemed theatre awards with nominations in 10 categories: including Best Play, Best Leading Actor in a Play (Jamie Parker), Best Featured Actor and Actress in a Play (Anthony Boyle and Noma Dumezweni respectively) and Best Direction (John Tiffany).
Further nominations went to Katrina Lindsay for Best Costume Design, Christine Jones for Best Scenic Design, Neil Austin for Best Lighting, Steven Hoggett for Best Choreography, and Gareth Fry for Best Sound Design.
Along with the Tonys, Cursed Child has so far secured 10 Outer Critics Circle Award nominations, eight Drama Desk Award nominations and three Drama League award nominations. All in all, this makes Cursed Child the most nominated play of the Broadway season.
Back home in the UK, the play has won 24 major theatre awards, including a record-breaking nine Olivier Awards. Phew.
We spoke to producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender when the nominations were announced.
‘We are thrilled that the play, our incredible creative team and actors have been recognised in the Tony nominations – this production has been such a wonderfully collaborative experience from the very beginning, and these nominations are a reflection of the extraordinary and inspired artistry of everybody involved in the making of this production, both on and off stage.’
And this is just the beginning. Cursed Child’s Broadway run at the Lyric Theatre has only just begun – with tickets currently available until May 2019. The play features seven members of the original West End cast, while in the UK, the London production of Cursed Child is now heading into its third year welcoming a new company at the end of May.
And don’t forget that the play is also due to open in Australia in 2019 – so if anyone has any spare Floo Powder, that’d be great.
The Tony Awards take place 10 June. For more information on tickets for Cursed Child on Broadway, check the official website. You can also look out for tickets for the West End here.
