You know when you get an invitation to a school reunion, and you suddenly remember a whole bunch of people you haven’t thought about in ages?
Professor Dumbledore visits a Petrified Colin Creevey in the Hospital Wing.

Well, this little list of often-forgotten characters should give you about the same feeling. Here are a few you might not have thought about in a while…

1. Colin Creevey

Everyone’s favourite amateur photographer was a little in awe of Harry. His determination to befriend him may have been exuberant but his devotion knew no bounds. Not even Petrification by a Basilisk in his first year seemed to dissuade him from pursuing the friendship. Brave little Colin eventually met his demise during the Battle of Hogwarts after creeping back into the school to fight. RIP, Colin.

2. Romilda Vane

Determined to date the Chosen One, Romilda was quite prepared to do whatever it took to achieve her goal. When her efforts to win Harry’s attention failed, she resorted to giving him chocolates laced with love potion. Fortunately for Harry, he didn’t fall for the ruse. Less fortunately, Ron scoffed the lot and became obsessed with her, much to Harry’s amusement and Lavender Brown’s chagrin.

3. Blaise Zabini

The only Slytherin to out-haughty Draco Malfoy, the wealthy and well-connected Zabini refused to be impressed by his Death Eater pal. With a nearly Snape-worthy sneer, Zabini not only put Malfoy in his place but was also dismissive and skeptical when Malfoy tried to impress his cohorts by implying that he was destined to support the Dark Lord rather than finish his education. It pretty much made him the only Slytherin who would not bow and scrape to Draco.

4. Justin Finch-Fletchley

This Muggle-born Hufflepuff was destined for Eton before finding out he was a wizard. His second year at Hogwarts was probably enough to make him wish he’d stuck with the original plan. He came face-to-face with a terrifying snake during Duelling Club and refused to accept that Harry was calling it off rather than egging the serpent on.

He had an altogether more frightening experience when he encountered the deadly Basilisk later that year. After several months of lying Petrified in the hospital wing, Justin was restored to full health, although we can only assume he had a well-founded phobia of snakes as a result.

5. Katie Bell

Harry’s long-standing Quidditch teammate Katie had a lucky escape when she found herself on the receiving end of a terrible curse. The Gryffindor Chaser was lucky to escape death when she was placed under the Imperius Curse in order to take a deadly gift to Dumbledore. Fortunately she made a full recovery and was able to return to the school to help secure a Gryffindor victory on the Quidditch field.

6. Cormac McLaggen

You’ve got to love Cormac. Well-connected and entitled, Ron’s nemesis firmly believed he would get both the Keeper position and the girl. Little did he know he was really just a pawn for Hermione as she struggled with her feelings for Ron. From being Confunded by her during keeper try-outs, to being invited to Slughorn’s Christmas party on the grounds he’d annoy Ron the most, poor Cormac didn’t actually stand a chance with Miss Granger. But he was great comic relief.

7. Zacharias Smith

The smug and sneering Zacharias reminded us that it wasn’t just the Slytherins’ attitude that Harry had to put up with. While Zacharias headed along to the first recruitment meeting for Dumbledore’s Army, it quickly transpired that he didn’t really believe Harry and just wanted to get the gossip firsthand and undermine him – there’s always one. As you’d expect, the ever-loyal Weasley boys were on hand to put him in his place.
