Dark Arts Fact File Body Text

Dark Arts referred to any magic that was mainly used to control, harm or kill its target. Brewing harmful [potions](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/potions), using hexes and curses, and breeding dark creatures could be illegal, not only because of the terrible consequences of using it but also for the corrupting nature of the practice which affected the practitioner themselves. The use of the Dark Arts was also commonly linked with affiliation with wizarding supremacy and support of Dark wizards, Lord Voldemort and Gellart Grindelwald. Although it was impossible to entirely defeat the Dark Arts young wizards were taught how to recognise it and defend themselves against Dark magic.

Outlawed for its extremely cruel nature, the Cruciatus Curse is one of the three Unforgivable Curses and has been used to torture both wizard and Muggle alike by followers of the [Dark Arts](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dark-arts). Whilst not fatal in itself, its use can be devastating. The Cruciatus Curse requires the spell caster to really desire the pain that it inflicts and as a result is not an easy spell to perform for most witches and wizards.

Phoenix Fact File Body Text

The phoenix is a rare but powerful magical bird, able to burst into flames and be reborn from the ashes. As a result, they can live to a very old age. Resplendent in crimson and gold, phoenixes have tails as long as a peacock with feathers that glow faintly in the dark. In the wild, phoenixes can be found on mountain peaks but they can also in rare cases, be domesticated, making very loyal pets. [Albus Dumbledore's](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) pet phoenix, [Fawkes](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/fawkes) demonstrated these qualities along with the ability to cure injuries with his tears and to carry huge weights.
