Goblin Fact File Body Text

Goblins are a highly intelligent race of human-like beings. Typically short, they have distinctive long noses and long, thin fingers. With a history of creating beautiful metal works including Godric [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor)’s sword, they have a distrust of the wizarding community, believing that any Goblin-made artefact ultimately belongs to the maker rather than the purchaser and should not be passed through the wizarding world. However, despite this point of tension, wizards and goblins are able to co-exist relatively peacefully and goblins both own and run [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley) bank, [Gringotts](/fact-file/locations/gringotts).

Gringotts Fact File Body Text

The wizarding bank located in [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley), Gringotts was owned and operated by [goblins](/fact-file/creatures/goblin). Dating back to 1474 the cavernous tunnels lead miles underground and stretch out beneath the streets of London, with the highest-security vaults located the deepest. The carts, used to navigate the mine-like deep tunnels, and keys, used to open the vaults, can only be operated by goblins. Although Gringotts was arguably one of the safest places in the wizarding world (as [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) said, "yeh'd be mad ter try an' rob it"), it has been subject to breaches of its security.

Located behind [the Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-[cauldron](/fact-file/objects/cauldron)) pub, Diagon Alley was the main shopping street for the UK’s wizarding community. With its ancient buildings and cobbled streets, Diagon Alley was often a busy place, particularly before term started as [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) students rushed to get the books and equipment on their back-to-school lists. Shops such as Madam Malkin’s Robes for all Occasions and Flourish and Botts sold everything from wizarding robes to cats, owls, [cauldrons](/fact-file/objects/cauldron) and quills, whilst [Ollivanders](/fact-file/locations/ollivanders) was the go-to place for finding the perfect [wand](/fact-file/objects/wand). The Alley was also home to [Gringotts](/fact-file/locations/gringotts) wizarding bank, and was connected to Knockturn Alley - a more sinister shopping street devoted to the Dark Arts.

Wizarding money came in three denominations in the United Kingdom: bronze Knuts, silver Sickles and gold Galleons. There were 29 Knuts to a Sickle and 17 Sickles to a Galleon. In the UK wizards kept their money in the [Goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin)-run [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley) based [Gringotts](/fact-file/locations/gringotts) bank. Foreign currency included US Dragots.

Phoenix Fact File Body Text

The phoenix is a rare but powerful magical bird, able to burst into flames and be reborn from the ashes. As a result, they can live to a very old age. Resplendent in crimson and gold, phoenixes have tails as long as a peacock with feathers that glow faintly in the dark. In the wild, phoenixes can be found on mountain peaks but they can also in rare cases, be domesticated, making very loyal pets. [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore)’s pet phoenix, [Fawkes](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/fawkes) demonstrated these qualities along with the ability to cure injuries with his tears and to carry huge weights.

The island prison in the middle of the North Sea, Azkaban was a place of confinement for the most dangerous wizards and witches. Guarded by [Dementors](/fact-file/creatures/dementor), life at Azkaban was notoriously brutal with many of its inhabitants losing their minds over the course of their sentence. Many dark witches and wizards passed through Azkaban's gates, including [Bellatrix](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/bellatrix-lestrange) and Rodolphus Lestrange, but as we learnt, it was possible to break out.
