Dumbledore's Army Fact File Body Text

Also known as the D.A., Dumbledore's Army was an organisation created by [Harry Potter](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter), [Hermione Granger](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hermione-granger) and [Ron Weasley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/ron-weasley) in their fifth year at [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts), intended to teach other students at the school how to defend themselves against the [Dark Arts](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dark-arts). This secret society became necessary when it was clear that [Dolores Umbridge](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/dolores-umbridge), the fifth year [Defence Against the Dark Arts](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/defence-against-the-dark-arts) teacher, would not properly teach them anything. The group met in [the Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) and used enchanted coins to communicate with its members. Harry taught the group some of the basics of duelling, such as the [Disarming Charm ](/fact-file/spells/the-disarming-charm)and [Impediment Jinx](/fact-file/spells/the-impediment-jinx), as well as advanced magic such as the [Patronus Charm](/fact-file/spells/the-patronus-charm).

The Room of Requirement Fact File Body Text

A magical room on the seventh floor of [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) castle, the Room of Requirement appeared when students were in particular need of it and would provide whatever was required. Also known as the Come and Go Room, and Room of Hidden Things, it could be used for anything - from hiding or storing items to providing a toilet in a time of need. The Room was accessed by walking past the stretch of wall opposite a tapestry, featuring Barnabas the Barmy's attempt to train trolls as ballet dancers, three times concentrating hard on what one needs. The Room came into use on a number of occasions including as a secret meeting place for [Dumbledore's Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army).

A type of Dark Detector, a Foe-Glass looked like a mirror but instead of a reflection it showed the viewer's enemies. Although these figures might appear shadowy as those antagonists grew closer the images would gain in clarity. Mad Eye Moody was one owner of a Foe Glass and after his departure from [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) it was found in [the Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) by [Dumbledore's Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army).

Dark Arts Fact File Body Text

Dark Arts referred to any magic that was mainly used to control, harm or kill its target. Brewing harmful potions, using hexes and curses, and breeding dark creatures could be illegal, not only because of the terrible consequences of using it but also for the corrupting nature of the practice which affected the practitioner themselves. The use of the Dark Arts was also commonly linked with affiliation with wizarding supremacy and support of Dark wizards, [Lord Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and [Gellert Grindelwald](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/gellert-grindelwald). Although it was impossible to entirely defeat the Dark Arts young wizards were taught how to recognise it and [defend themselves](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/defence-against-the-dark-arts) against Dark magic.

Phoenix Fact File Body Text

The phoenix is a rare but powerful magical bird, able to burst into flames and be reborn from the ashes. As a result, they can live to a very old age. Resplendent in crimson and gold, phoenixes have tails as long as a peacock with feathers that glow faintly in the dark. In the wild, phoenixes can be found on mountain peaks but they can also in rare cases, be domesticated, making very loyal pets. [Albus Dumbledore's](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) pet phoenix, [Fawkes](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/fawkes) demonstrated these qualities along with the ability to cure injuries with his tears and to carry huge weights.

Barty Crouch Jr. Fact File Body Text

Barty Crouch Jr. first became a follower of Lord Voldemort in his teenage years and was sent to [Azkaban](/fact-file/locations/azkaban) for his involvement in the capture and torture of Frank and Alice Longbottom. However, he was able to escape, the first to do so in almost 300 years, and travelled to [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) in order to help his master return to power via a twisted scheme. Barty's actions were particularly notable considering his father, Barty Crouch Sr., was a respected wizard at the [Ministry of Magic.](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/ministry-of-magic-classifications)

Alastor 'Mad-Eye' Moody was a famed [Auror](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/auror), well respected for his impressive skills. Following many years of tracking down the most dangerous wizards, he had become very careful about security, bordering on paranoid.
