Durmstrang Institute was a school for witches and wizards set in the far Northern reaches of Europe, with stunning grounds and sprawling views, but its exact location is a mystery. In fact, visitors must undergo a [Memory Charm](/fact-file/spells/the-memory-charm) to maintain the school's mystique after they leave. During the [Triwizard Tournament](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/triwizard-tournament) at [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts), Durmstrang was one of the competing schools, with [Quidditch](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/quidditch) ace [Viktor Krum](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/viktor-krum) serving as their champion. However, Durmstrang has also been known for its witches and wizards with interests in the darker side of magic, with [Igor Karkaroff](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/igor-karkaroff), an ex-Death Eater, instilling fear into the school during his tenure there, while former student [Gellert Grindelwald](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/gellert-grindelwald) went on to be one of the most terrifying wizards of his generation.

Beauxbatons Academy of Magic was a wizarding school located in the Pyrenees mountains, with French, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Luxembourgian and Belgian students being some of the most common nationalities who studied there. The school was set in a beautiful chateau surrounded by formal landscaped gardens. Beauxbatons was one of the three schools that traditionally took part in the [Triwizard Tournament](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/triwizard-tournament) and travelled to the host school in enormous enchanted carriages, each pulled by a dozen winged horses. At the time, [Madame Maxime](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/olympe-maxime) was the headmistress of the school, with [Fleur Delacour](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/fleur-delacour) being chosen as the school's Champion. Fleur was keen to tell people how much better her school was over Hogwarts, boasting about ice sculptures that did not melt, and wood nymphs that would serenade the students.

The Triwizard Cup was the grand prize for winning the [Triwizard Tournament](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/triwizard-tournament), alongside a thousand galleons, and, of course, securing eternal glory for the school the Champion represented. During the tournament hosted at Hogwarts, the cup was placed in the centre of a complicated maze, with the Champions tasked with overcoming several magical obstacles (such as solving a riddle from a [Sphinx](/fact-file/creatures/sphinx)) to reach the trophy.

The Goblet of Fire Fact File Body Text

The Goblet of Fire was used in the [Triwizard Tournament](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/triwizard-tournament) as a method of choosing Champions to compete. Dumbledore drew an Age Line around the cup to prevent underage students putting their name in, although this wasn't a foolproof method and didn't stop the Goblet choosing [Harry Potter](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter) - despite the fact he was below the qualifying age of 17, and that only one Champion per school was supposed to be picked. The Weasley twins also learnt that magically ageing themselves would not work, growing lovely, thick white beards when they attempted to do so.

The Triwizard tournament was a 700 year old competition established between three schools; Hogwarts, [Durmstrang](/fact-file/locations/durmstrang-institute) and [Beauxbatons](/fact-file/locations/beauxbatons-academy). One champion from each school was selected to compete in three magical tasks, with their name magically being selected from the [Goblet of Fire](/fact-file/objects/the-goblet-of-fire). The winner of the competition claimed [the Triwizard Cup](/fact-file/objects/the-triwizard-cup) along with a monetary prize. After a hiatus of a number of years, due to a high fatality rate, the Triwizard Tournament returned to Hogwarts during Harry's fourth year at school.

Cedric Diggory Fact File Body Text

The first Hogwarts competitor to be chosen by the [Goblet of Fire](/fact-file/objects/the-goblet-of-fire) for the [Triwizard Tournament](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/triwizard-tournament), Cedric Diggory was quickly joined by surprise fourth champion [Harry Potter](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter). Having already played Seeker opposite Harry in the previous year, Cedric was graceful in being pitted against the famous Potter and the pair quickly came to realise that they could join forces and benefit from sharing knowledge and ideas. The handsome Hufflepuff Quidditch Captain was by far and away the Hogwarts favourite, not only as a competitor for the trophy but also as a pin-up. Good hearted as he was heroic however, Cedric was devoted to his girlfriend, Ravenclaw, [Cho Chang](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/cho-chang).

Viktor Krum was already a [Quidditch](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/quidditch) star when he arrived at [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) for the [Triwizard Tournament](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/triwizard-tournament). Seeker for the Bulgarian national team, he featured in the Quidditch World Cup before travelling as [Durmstrang's](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/durmstrang-institute) champion. Strong, powerful and with unmatched flying skills, Krum was a tough competitor, but mostly got the Hogwarts students riled up when he took [Hermione Granger](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hermione-granger) as his date to the [Yule Ball](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/yule-ball).

A pupil at French wizarding school, [Beauxbatons](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/beauxbatons-academy), Fleur Delacour travelled to [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) for the [Triwizard Tournament](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/triwizard-tournament). Her name was chosen alongside [Cedric Diggory](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/cedric-diggory), [Viktor Krum](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/viktor-krum)  and, controversially, an unexpected fourth competitor, [Harry Potter](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter). Fleur was a popular champion, largely due to her bravery, and skills and quick mind, but also in part to her quarter-[Veela](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/veela) heritage. Fleur returned to France after the Tournament but soon found her way back to the UK where she met and fell in love with Ron's older brother, [Bill Weasley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/bill-weasley), while working at [Gringotts](/fact-file/locations/gringotts).

Harry Potter was prophesied to be the downfall of [Lord Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and therefore singled out at birth as the Dark Lord's rival. He was known in the wizarding world as 'The Boy Who Lived' after becoming the only known survivor of [the Killing Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-killing-curse), which was attempted by Voldemort when Harry was just a baby, after both his parents were murdered.
