Quidditch Fact File Body Text

Quidditch was a wizarding sport played on [broomsticks](/fact-file/objects/broomstick). The teams consisted of seven players competing to score the higher number of points, either by the Chasers (three on each team) scoring goals by throwing a Quaffle through a hoop or by the Seekers (one on each team) catching the [Golden Snitch](/fact-file/objects/golden-snitch) - at which point the game ended. Although the Snitch was worth 150 points, a game could be won the team who did not catch the Snitch if enough goals were scored before it was caught. Chasers and Seekers also had to avoid being hit by Bludgers, hard iron balls that were directed across the pitch by Beaters (two on each team). The final position is the Keeper, who would defend their team's hoops from opposing Chasers. Games were usually played by mixed teams, although the Holyhead Harpies were an all-female professional team.

Gryffindor Fact File Body Text

One of the four [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) houses, Gryffindor was founded by [Godric Gryffindor](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/godric-gryffindor) and favoured students who possessed characteristics such as courage, daring and determination. The house colours were scarlet and gold, and the emblematic animal was a lion, which decorated the walls of the [Gryffindor common room](/fact-file/locations/the-gryffindor-common-room). Gryffindor alumni included all seven Weasley children, Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, all four Marauders and Albus Dumbledore. Gryffindor students embraced a long held rivalry with Slytherin house although they were largely friendly with Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff students.

Angelina Johnson was a Gryffindor student in the same year as the Weasley twins who were also on the house [Quidditch](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/quidditch) team. Angelina played as the team's Chaser and was instrumental in many of Gryffindor's victories. The phoenix is a rare but powerful magical bird, able to burst into flames and be reborn from the ashes. As a result, they can live to a very old age. Resplendent in crimson and gold, phoenixes have tails as long as a peacock with feathers that glow faintly in the dark. In the wild, phoenixes can be found on mountain peaks but they can also in rare cases, be domesticated, making very loyal pets. [Albus Dumbledore's](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) pet phoenix, [Fawkes](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/fawkes) demonstrated these qualities along with the ability to cure injuries with his tears and to carry huge weights.

The island prison in the middle of the North Sea, Azkaban was a place of confinement for the most dangerous wizards and witches. Guarded by [Dementors](/fact-file/creatures/dementor), life at Azkaban was notoriously brutal with many of its inhabitants losing their minds over the course of their sentence. Also known as the D.A., Dumbledore's Army was an organisation created by [Harry Potter](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter), [Hermione Granger](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hermione-granger) and [Ron Weasley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/ron-weasley) in their fifth year at [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts), intended to teach other students at the school how to defend themselves against the [Dark Arts](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dark-arts). This secret society became necessary when it was clear that [Dolores Umbridge](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/dolores-umbridge), the fifth year [Defence Against the Dark Arts](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/defence-against-the-dark-arts) teacher, would not properly teach them anything. The group met in [the Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) and used enchanted coins to communicate with its members.
