__When he told Harry not to worry ahead of his first term at Hogwarts__

If you think about it, Hagrid was the [perfect person to introduce Harry to the wizarding world](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/the-chapter-that-made-us-fall-in-love-with-hagrid). Fierce enough to frighten the Dursleys, but warm-hearted, instinctive, and able to explain things in a no-nonsense way. Literally, a gentle giant. He also understood that Harry’s time at Hogwarts wouldn’t be easy, because he knew what it was like to be an outsider. That’s why his words to Harry at the end of that birthday trip to Diagon Alley rang so true. They were genuine and kind. Just like Hagrid himself.

__When he helped Ron and comforted Hermione after Malfoy’s insults__

By the time second year rolled around, Malfoy being rude wasn’t unusual – but he really upped the stakes when he called Hermione a Mudblood. But when Ron ended up eating slugs thanks to his backfiring wand, who was there to calm the waters again? Hagrid, of course. Not only did he validate Ron’s reaction and give him space to cough up slug after slug (‘better out than in,’ after all), he also identified that the best way to comfort Hermione was to show how proud of her he was.

__The way he always stuck up for Harry__

Hagrid was unendingly loyal to his friends even if it meant getting into trouble himself, as Aragog might attest to. So when Harry was hauled off to Dumbledore’s office after finding Nearly Headless Nick and Justin Finch-Fletchley Petrified, it surprised nobody when Hagrid burst in to spring to his defence. Then, a couple of years later, Hagrid was one of the only people to unquestioningly accept Harry’s version of events after he’d been revealed as the fourth Triwizard Champion.

__The way he responded to Rita Skeeter’s giant story__

Hagrid’s initial response might have been to go into hiding but when Dumbledore, Hermione, Harry and Ron showed him that his half-giant status meant nothing to those that mattered, he came out fighting.

It was completely understandable that Hagrid would want to run away after the initial revelations, but the way he ultimately honoured Dumbledore’s faith in him and came back with his head held high was admirable. And when Hermione later fell foul of Rita Skeeter’s poisonous words, Hagrid drew on his own experience to comfort her.

__The way he accepted Voldemort’s return__

Hagrid, as he told Harry, Ron and Hermione, always knew Voldemort would return. He didn’t hide from the fact, like Fudge, or run towards danger, like Sirius. He just accepted it, calmly, with faith that things would turn out OK – and a willingness to fight for that outcome. And still, even as he was reflecting on what was to come, he knew exactly what to say to make Harry feel better after Cedric’s death.

__When he tried to comfort Harry after Sirius’s death__

Hagrid had rather an eventful fifth year himself – what with his attempts to civilise Grawp, being ostracised by angry centaurs, sacked by Professor Umbridge and later attacked by her acolytes – but once again, his own problems didn’t stop him looking out for Harry. As Harry wondered aimlessly around Hogwarts in the days after Sirius’s death, Hagrid tried to offer some words of comfort and his sympathetic view of Sirius was perhaps a truth Harry needed to hear.

__When he held a “Support Harry Potter” party (despite it being very unwise to do so)__

Laughs were thin on the ground during the Horcrux hunt, so it was a welcome surprise when Ron introduced Harry and Hermione to Potterwatch,which went on to reveal that Hagrid had narrowly escaped arrest for throwing a “Support Harry Potter” party. Not the best decision he’d ever made maybe, but hearing that Hagrid’s loyalty even in the face of danger remained as steadfast as ever was a real tonic during a very dark time.

## He was the one who brought Harry to (relative) safety when his parents died
On that awful night when Voldemort murdered Harry’s parents, Hagrid was the one who took him from his house in Godric’s Hollow and brought him to Privet Drive. The care he had for infant Harry was clear from the moment we met him in that very first chapter. When Dumbledore asked Hagrid to hand him over so he could leave him with the Dursleys, Hagrid clearly didn’t want to be separated from him. Not only did he burst into tears, but he also worried like any parent would about leaving him there. We know we felt very emotional when Hagrid said his goodbyes to Harry.

## He introduced Harry to the wizarding world
The day that Harry found out he was a wizard had to be one of the best days of his entire life – and it was Hagrid who gave him that wonderful news. He burst into the hut-on-the-rock, gave the Dursleys a piece of his mind (not to mention Dudley a new tail) and even presented Harry with his first ever birthday cake. If that wasn’t enough, he told Harry who he was and introduced him to the wizarding world. 

Though it was what happened next that really made us view Hagrid as a father figure. Any child starting a new school needs to get their school supplies together, and often it is your parents who help with that. In this instance, the role fell to Hagrid, and he was the one who took Harry shopping in Diagon Alley. He made sure Harry had everything he needed, from his books to his wand and even stepped in to stop him from impulse buying a solid gold cauldron. The whole day could have been a father and son bonding trip – especially when Hagrid bought Harry his beloved Hedwig… and a delicious ice cream.

## He always remembered him on Christmas and birthdays
Growing up with the Dursleys, Harry didn’t expect much (if anything) when it came to Christmas and birthdays. The best he could hope for was a pair of Uncle Vernon’s old socks. Yet Hagrid never forgot about Harry. He gave him presents on all of his birthdays and every Christmas – and never forgot him. While some of the gifts (like Hedwig) were more appreciated than others (like his homemade treacle toffee), it proved that Harry was never far from Hagrid’s thoughts. He loved him, wanted to make sure that he knew he was always there and that he could be relied upon.

## He wasn’t afraid to tell him off when he needed to 
Like all teenagers, Harry was prone to messing up and Hagrid was there to gently chastise him when needed – just like a father would. In *Prisoner of Azkaban*, Harry and Ron stopped talking to Hermione over Harry’s Firebolt and weren’t being particularly good friends to her. Hagrid noticed their behaviour and sat them down for a little chat. While Hagrid wasn’t often one for serious talks, this proved he could step in and take a parental role when needed. While we are sure Harry found it rather uncomfortable and probably wished the ground would swallow him up, there were only a handful of people who would be willing to have those awkward chats and put him on the straight and narrow.

## He always supported Harry and helped him where he could 
Lots of parents like to support their kids whenever they can – whether it is cheering them on when they play in a football match, watching them be sheep number three in their school nativity, helping them with their homework, or just supporting their life decisions. Hagrid was no exception. He was there in the stands at Harry’s Quidditch matches yelling words of encouragement. He was there for all of the Triwizard Tournament tasks – and even gave him a heads up about the dragon in the first task. Most importantly, he believed and supported Harry in bringing about an end to Voldemort. If that’s not excellent dad behaviour, we don’t know what is.

## Harry was always welcome at Hagrid’s hut 
When Harry was at Hogwarts, he knew he could always go to Hagrid’s cabin whenever he needed to – from the first time he was invited to pop over for a cup of tea. Harry clearly made the most of having Hagrid close by on campus. After all, it was the first place he thought to take Ron after that memorable slug vomiting incident. Like when it comes to visiting your parents, Harry needed no excuse to visit – and often didn’t provide any advance warning. On the whole, Hagrid was always pleased to see him and didn’t mind if Harry was coming for a catch up, to try and get information from him or to ask his advice. He would be there with a hot drink, (often inedible) snacks and a listening ear.

## Hagrid is allergic to cats

Given his love of all animals, it might be surprising to learn that Hagrid is actually allergic to cats. In *Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone*, Hagrid tells Harry that he ‘don’ like cats' because they make him sneeze, which is why he chose to buy Harry an owl, Hedwig, for his birthday present. J.K. Rowling has also confirmed that felines are one furry creature Hagrid won’t be friends with owing to his allergy.

In *Harry Potter: Page to Screen: The Complete Filmmaking Journey*, according to Robbie Coltrane, who played Hagrid in the Harry Potter films, the character was modelled on a real biker. Coltrane said that J.K. Rowling told him that Hagrid was ‘based on a Hell's Angel she knew in the West Country’. ‘He was just huge and terrifying,’ Coltrane recalled Rowling telling him. ‘And then he would sit down and talk about his garden and how his petunias had been very bad that year.’

## His wand was 16 inches, and it was described as rather bendy 

Given Hagrid’s immense size (he is half-giant, after all), it’s no wonder that his wand would follow suit. Sitting at an awe-inspiring 16 inches, the wand, which was made of oak, has also been described as rather bendy. According to [Mr Ollivander's notes on Wand Woods](/writing-by-jk-rowling/wand-woods), oak makes sense for Hagrid - as wizards who use oak wands usually have an 'affinity with the magic of the natural world' - which Hagrid definitely does.

Unfortunately, after his expulsion from Hogwarts in his third year, Hagrid's wand was broken. And, we think he’d prefer it if we kept away any mention of his pink umbrella... 

## He was a Gryffindor 

Hagrid’s Hogwarts house is never mentioned in the books, but, given his kindness, noble nature and bravery, it might not come as that much of a surprise that Hagrid was in [Gryffindor](https://www.wizardingworld.com/collections/gryffindor). 

## He can’t cast a Patronus

Given his affinity for creatures, it was surprising to learn that Hagrid can’t actually cast the charm to produce an animal guardian. In a Q&A with Harry Potter fans on Twitter, J.K. Rowling was quizzed what Hagrid’s Patronus would be. In reply, she wrote, ‘Hagrid couldn't produce a Patronus. It's a very difficult spell.'

As Hagrid was expelled from Hogwarts, it makes sense that he might not have mastered the art of casting a Patronus. Indeed, [you can read here](/writing-by-jk-rowling/patronus-charm) that ‘the majority of witches and wizards are unable to produce Patronuses and to do so is generally considered a mark of superior magical ability’. Hagrid, therefore, isn’t alone in his inability to cast a Patronus. 

## Hagrid had a hard childhood

Hagrid is another character in the Harry Potter series who had a hard childhood. When he was three years old, his mother, the giantess Fridwulfa, returned to her giant colony, leaving him alone to be raised by his father. Despite their size differences, he had a strong bond with his wizard father – Hagrid even used to put his father on the top of his dresser when he was annoyed with him. However, his father, sadly, passed away when Hagrid was in his second year of Hogwarts.

## Hagrid is resistant to stunning spells

Most likely owing to his huge size, and his status as a half-giant, Hagrid is pretty resistant to stunning spells. As Herminone explains in *Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix*, ‘It’s very hard to Stun a giant, they’re like trolls, really tough.’

Hagrid’s loyalty knows no bounds. It’s why we love him so much. However, it’s also something that causes him a lot of grief, too. From Buckbeak to Grawp, Hagrid stands by those he cares about, no matter the cost. In fact, in *Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows*, we learn that Hagrid has been [standing by Harry](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/why-hagrid-was-the-best-father-figure-harry-had), who by then was Undesirable No. 1, despite Hogwarts’ reign of terror under Snape and the Carrows. During a broadcast of Potterwatch, we learn that Hagrid has been hosting ‘Support Harry Potter’ parties.

## He was in the original Order of the Phoenix 

As we know, Dumbledore always trusted Hagrid – it’s why he sent him off to pick up you-know-what from vault 713. Indeed, by that point Hagrid was probably quite used to having errands given to him from Dumbledore because Hagrid was actually a part of the original Order of the Phoenix. We can see him in the picture of the original Order in the film version of *Order of the Phoenix* and Dumbledore even trusted Hagrid to go and pick up Harry from Godric’s Hollow following Voldemort’s downfall and the death of his parents. 

## J.K. Rowling always planned for Hagrid to carry Harry out of the Forbidden Forest at the end of *Deathly Hallows*

Speaking in an interview with Daniel Radcliffe included on the *Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows - Part 2* Blu-ray, J.K. Rowling revealed that she had always planned for Hagrid to carry Harry’s seemingly lifeless body out of the Forbidden Forest during the Battle of Hogwarts. She explained that Hagrid carrying Harry at the end was symbolic, because he carried baby Harry when he delivered him to the Dursley’s at Privet Drive in the *Philosopher’s Stone*. In fact, it stopped her from killing Hagrid off. ‘That image kept him safe,’ she said. Phew.

Right from the beginning of the Harry Potter stories, even when Harry was just a baby, Hagrid was there. Indeed, in the very first chapter of *Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone*, Hagrid was one of the first magical characters we were introduced to, alongside Professor McGonagall and Professor Dumbledore on that fateful night where Voldemort fell, Harry was left an orphan, and the Muggle world was none the wiser. 

Arriving on Sirius Black’s motorbike with a fast-asleep baby Harry in his arms, Hagrid’s impact on us was immediate straight from the off. A half-giant with a heart of gold wailing in despair that Harry Potter’s parents had been killed, and now Harry had to live with a Muggle family who hated magic, away from all the people who truly loved him.

J.K. Rowling once notably said in an interview that [she never planned to kill off Hagrid](/features/pleasing-harry-potter-facts-that-might-cheer-you-up), due to having a strong image of Hagrid carrying Harry at the end of *Deathly Hallows*, mirroring the moment he did the same for Harry as a baby. A strange, otherworldly giant man aggressively breaking into a tiny hut, terrifying the entire room, and then casually asking for a cup of tea. Truly, this moment is Hagrid all over; a man who is seemingly quite intimidating on the outside, but compassionate and lovely the second you get to know him. It was the perfect introduction – except of course, Harry had no idea he’d already met Hagrid, albeit as a baby. The only memory Harry really had of Hagrid was an abstract one; [a strange dream he had of a flying motorbike... ](/features/the-significance-of-harrys-weirdest-dreams)

Hagrid’s appearance really was the apex of a strange couple of days for Harry and the Dursleys, who had been trying to escape an endless slew of letters inviting Harry to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry – not to mention the fact it was Harry’s birthday. Hagrid’s fury at the Dursleys for not telling Harry anything about the wizarding world was both terrifying and amazing; Hagrid cared so deeply for Harry’s well-being, his tenderness was fearsome. 

And what’s more? Hagrid even brought Harry a birthday cake and sausages! Harry was baffled – but also hungry. Again, how perfectly fitting that Harry’s first proper introduction to magic should be witnessing a half-giant using a magic umbrella to heat up some sausages. 

And then, after all that, Hagrid uttered the words we would never forget in true Hagrid fashion.

Hagrid has had many golden moments over the Harry Potter films and books, obviously. His giant pumpkins, the Care of Magical Creatures lessons, the absolute knees-up he had with Harry and Slughorn at Aragog’s funeral. And through it all, Hagrid was always just around for a huge hug at the end of a particularly gruelling time. Whether it be offering Ron a bucket for vomiting slugs, or flying Harry to safety from a swarm of Death Eaters, he would never falter in terms of taking care of his friends. 

So endlessly loyal to Hogwarts, Dumbledore and Harry, Hagrid always led with kindness despite having suffered so many hardships himself. A spell in Azkaban, expulsion from Hogwarts, a damning news article from Rita Skeeter, having to let go of the dangerous creatures he so dearly loves on several occasions... when you weigh everything up, Hagrid had been through the ringer. But despite it all, Hagrid’s strength in times of darkness was crucial, especially as a torch of inspiration for Harry. 

Hence why we have picked such an early chapter in Harry’s story to hero Hagrid. We can think of no better person to tell Harry that he was a wizard, the truth about his parents, the whole thing. And at the end, when Hagrid thought Harry was dead, and carried him through Hogwarts the same way he carried Harry has an infant, the story had come full circle. 

And 19 years later, Hagrid was still around for Harry’s family, inviting Albus over for tea on his very first week of Hogwarts. Over generations, Hagrid will always be there.

When we first met Hagrid he wasn’t a Professor but, as Keeper of Keys, he was already a Hogwarts fixture. We learnt a lot from the incredibly kind half-giant over the years, and we’re not talking about the intricacies of a Blast-Ended Skrewt. Although, well, that too.

## Loyalty breeds trust

Could there be any better person to introduce Harry to the wizarding world than Hagrid? He’s at once integral to Hogwarts and also something of an outsider. We first knew Hagrid was important when we saw him drop baby Harry off at the Dursleys’. Dumbledore stated he’d trust Hagrid with his life, despite Professor McGonagall questioning Hagrid’s abilities. For Dumbledore, Hagrid’s loyalty outweighed any concerns. Sure enough, when it came to fetching Harry, it was Hagrid on a flying motorbike that Dumbledore trusted.

## How to navigate the magical community

Our very first glimpses into the wizarding world, from owl post to The Daily Prophet, were supplied by Hagrid. But nothing could quite prepare Harry for the wonders of Diagon Alley, that magical corner of wizarding London with its goblin-run bank and wandmaker’s shop and people tripping over themselves to speak to him in the Leaky Cauldron. Hagrid, with his kind smile and his no-nonsense explanations, was the perfect person to counter Harry’s anxieties about how little he knew. He was also pretty good at screaming at Uncle Vernon for trying to ‘stamp’ the magic out of him. 

## You don’t always need magic to be a bit magical

Hagrid might introduce Harry to the magical community, but – despite his pink flowery umbrella – he isn’t supposed to do magic, strictly speaking, having been expelled from Hogwarts rather early on. Without magic Hagrid is much more physical than the other Professors, from carrying Christmas trees to hand-rearing magical creatures to pouring tea. Despite this, we’re under no illusions that his pink flowery umbrella most likely contains the pieces of Hagrid’s broken wand, given what he can do with it…

## Appearances can be deceptive

At first glance, Hagrid might seem frightening – a giant of a man with long, shaggy hair, a wild beard, beetle-like eyes and pockets full of cake and dormice. For his friends, though, he’s anything but scary. His loyalty is fierce and he’s kind to a fault, because Hagrid never judges on appearance – on the contrary, the scarier reputation a creature has, the more likely Hagrid is to sympathise. He almost always chooses to believe the best in others.

## Your future isn't determined by your background

In *Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire*, Rita Skeeter reveals Hagrid is half-giant, a fact he has kept hidden because he fears the reaction, knowing giants have a reputation for violence as previous allies of Lord Voldemort. Hagrid, with his fondness for all creatures and disgust for Dark Magic, is about as far from an ally of Lord Voldemort as it’s possible to be. His friends know this, with Hermione, Harry and Ron persuading him not to resign and Dumbledore refusing to let him. That’s why it’s important for Hagrid that Harry win the Triwizard Tournament. He says it best: ‘It’d show ’em all… yeh don’ have to be pure-blood ter do it.’

## Listen to your friends…

Hagrid being persuaded not to resign is an example of a very valuable lesson – listen to your friends, they have your best interests at heart. Hermione, Harry and Ron also persuade him to give up Norbert, realising that a wooden hut is not the best home for a dragon, and Hagrid returns the favour on more than one occasion. In *Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban*, he tells Ron to make up with Hermione, saying: ‘People can be a bit stupid abou’ their pets.’

## … and listen to the experts

Hagrid may not have finished school but he is extraordinarily knowledgeable about magical creatures, so whether it’s instructing his class about approaching a Hippogriff or treating the centaurs of the Forbidden Forest with respect, only someone very foolish would deny he knows what he’s talking about. If someone more informed than you tells you something, pay attention. Draco Malfoy learnt this the hard way.

## Family is important – and it isn’t always defined by blood

His mother might have abandoned him, but family is important to Hagrid. We can tell from the affectionate way he talks about his father and the heroic efforts he makes with his not-so-little half-brother, Grawp. But family is more than just blood. Hogwarts is Hagrid’s home, as it is Harry’s, and that’s largely due to the community Dumbledore has built through trust and kindness. In both cases, these are relationships Hagrid honours and defends.

## True loyalty is unwavering

If Dumbledore is the centre of Hogwarts, it is because of the unswerving loyalty he inspires. Hagrid epitomises this. It is enough for Hagrid that Dumbledore trusts Snape, despite any evidence to the contrary. When Dumbledore is removed from Hogwarts, Hagrid protests. When Dumbledore asks Hagrid to reach out to the giants, he goes. Hagrid is loyal to all his friends, especially Harry, and to the creatures he loves, from Norbert to Aragog. It’s a loyalty he never questions, which may occasionally lead to trouble but – Aragog’s man-eating family aside – Hagrid’s friendship is a prize worth winning.

## To always face up to the truth

His belief in the people around him gives Hagrid the strength to be brave, and his practical, no-nonsense approach endows him with wisdom. Whether it’s being sent to Azkaban for a crime he didn’t commit or fronting up to Rita Skeeter, Hagrid doesn’t allow himself long to wallow. It’s not that he’s not sad or scared, it’s just that he faces things head-on.

As he says in *Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire*: ‘What’s comin’ will come, an’ we’ll meet it when it does.’

## Don’t be afraid to have a cry

[Hagrid](/features/rubeus-hagrid "Rubeus Hagrid") taught us so many things but one of the most important was that everyone should be allowed to cry – especially considering Hagrid is half-giant, and [giants](/features/giants "Giants") aren’t usually the most emotional of folks. If things get too much, if you can’t express yourself any other way than just having a [good old sob](/feature/18-potter-scenes-that-definitely-didnt-make-us-cry "18 Harry Potter scenes that definitely didn’t make us cry"), that is absolutely fine.

## Don’t be ashamed of where you come from

Being half-giant exposed Hagrid to a lot of prejudice but he always remained proud of his heritage, particularly when it came to his half-brother, [Grawp](/features/grawp "Grawp"). He even tried to teach Grawp English and more refined manners so that he would become less aggressive and more peaceful, helping him settle down. Where others would have shunned Grawp for his behaviour, Hagrid stayed loyal and looked after him.

Of course, there was also Hagrid's extended family, such as [Norbert](/features/norbert "Norbert") and [Buckbeak](/features/buckbeak "Buckbeak"), who were outsiders, like Grawp, society didn’t quite understand. Eventually Hagrid lost Buckbeak but not before he introduced his Care of Magical Creatures class to the [Hippogriff](/features/hippogriffs "Hippogriffs") to show them what a fascinating animal Hippogriffs were. 

## Embrace your fashion choices 

People can be so quick to judge on another’s appearance. Thankfully, Hagrid took it all in one giant stride, emphasis on 'giant'. It takes someone with a great inner confidence to team a [pink, flowery umbrella](/feature/rubeus-hagrid-and-the-case-of-the-pink-flowery-umbrella "Rubeus Hagrid and the case of the pink, flowery umbrella") with a big moleskin overcoat, but if Hagrid can pull it off, so can you.

## Bending the rules isn’t so bad

Hagrid was the first person from the wizarding world who [Harry](/features/harry-potter "Harry Potter") met and the first person who set the example of bending the rules a little. Despite being banned from conducting magic himself, Hagrid had his pink umbrella, and, upon meeting Harry for the first time (well, for the first time Harry could remember), he used it to give [Dudley](/features/dudley-dursley "Dudley Dursley") an adorable little pig’s tail. 

Additionally, in protecting Norbert and Grawp on [Hogwarts](/features/hogwarts "Hogwarts") grounds Hagrid would have certainly found himself in conflict with official [Ministry](/features/the-ministry-of-magic "The Ministry of Magic") rules. However, Hagrid never did anything unsafe – though [Draco](/features/draco-malfoy "Draco Malfoy") tried to convince people that this was the case on a couple of occasions – and he always gently bent the rules in a way that Harry and especially [Dumbledore](/features/albus-dumbledore "Albus Dumbledore") didn’t mind. 

## Pets are family, too

An extension of Hagrid’s kindly nature towards outsiders was his love for animals, whom he treated like his own children. Hideous, large, often hairy children. For example, he saw something in [Aragog](/features/aragog "Aragog"), a creature most people, quite reasonably, feared (especially if you're an arachnophobe), and made sure he was kept safe from harm, which was a kindness only people like Hagrid could provide.

Hagrid didn’t really go into much detail about his family and lived alone [in his hut](/features/hagrids-hut "Hagrid's hut"), so his pets were definitely a type of family for him. And when he lost Aragog, it hit him hard. Not everyone would have a funeral and a drunken singalong for a giant spider. Hagrid taught us that it’s perfectly acceptable to mourn animals like you would a person, and that’s a more than valid lesson to learn in life – even if the creature in question is, as we say, a [huge hairy spider who liked to eat people](/features/acromantula "Acromantula").

## There ain’t no hug like a Hagrid hug 

Hagrid was very much in touch with his emotions, and would always be on standby for a (literal) giant hug if you fancied one.

## 1. He is the first magical person that Harry properly meets 

After a miserable time with the Dursleys, Hagrid is the perfect person to come and rescue him. And as a big man with ‘hands the size of dustbin lids’ and a grand bushy beard, he definitely knows how to make an impression! After the Dursleys try and run away from Harry’s Hogwarts letters, heading to the miserable Hut on the Rock, we will always be grateful that Hagrid found Harry (on his birthday, no less!) and gave him cake and sausages, alongside his Hogwarts letter, finally. What a wonderful way to find out you’re a wizard! 

## 2. He loves magical creatures 

Is there anyone in the wizarding world that loves magical creatures as much as Hagrid? Even when he first meets Harry, he casually mentions that he’d love to own a dragon. A dragon, Hagrid? Not a cute little kitten? Alright then... But that’s another thing we love about Hagrid: he adores creatures great and small and finds even the most scary and scaly of animals positively adorable. As you continue to read the first book, you’ll meet a few more of Hagrid’s animal friends... and they all come with their own surprises.  

## 3. He bought Harry his owl, Hedwig 

Speaking of animals, it was because of Hagrid that Harry got his beautiful, snowy owl, Hedwig. Hagrid bought him for Harry as a birthday present in Diagon Alley, which is helpful, as wizards and witches need owls to send and receive their letters. Plus, we couldn’t imagine Harry Potter without Hedwig, so we’ll always be grateful to Hagrid for picking such a cool pet for Harry – and for not getting him a dragon... 

## 4. He has a flying motorbike! 

Look, anyone who has a flying motorbike is alright in our book. Indeed, when we first meet Hagrid in the very first chapter of the first book, carrying a baby Harry Potter, it is this amazing vehicle that he arrives in. No wonder Harry has dreams about flying motorbikes many years later! Did you spot that? 

## 5. He is always the kindest person in the room  

It is always important to lead with kindness, and despite being a larger-than-life man, with a love of scary creatures, Hagrid’s best trait is how thoughtful and compassionate he is. The only times Hagrid seems to get angry is when he’s outraged about something unjustified – like how mean the Dursleys had been to Harry! But that’s Hagrid all over – a big man with a big heart. And we could all do with being a bit more like him.

Part of what made the half-giant so special was his unintentional heroism. Here are some of the ways [Rubeus](/features/rubeus-hagrid "Rubeus Hagrid") saved the day without even trying…

## With good news 

Hagrid was the one to deliver Harry to [the Dursleys’](https://live.wizarding.world/writing-by-jk-rowling/vernon-and-petunia-dursley) doorstep on [Privet Drive](/features/number-four-privet-drive "Number Four, Privet Drive"). Years later, he thought he was simply following orders by wishing [Harry](/features/harry-potter "Harry Potter") a happy birthday and delivering his Hogwarts letter. But then he learned that the Dursleys had withheld everything about Harry’s life and family, and so came the words that would change things forever.

## With secrets

Hagrid opened up a door to adventure, by accident of course, when he revealed the secret to getting past [Fluffy](/features/fluffy "Fluffy"). This was a vital clue in spurring Harry, Ron and Hermione on to find the [Philosopher’s Stone](/features/philosophers-stone "The Philosopher’s Stone").

## With giants

Hagrid was worried about his half-brother being bullied by other [giants](/features/giants "Giants"), so brought him back to [Hogwarts](/features/hogwarts "Hogwarts"). He asked Harry, Ron and Hermione to look after the er, little one, while he was away. 

Just as well too, because [Grawp](/features/grawp "Grawp") helped Harry and Hermione out of a spot of trouble with some centaurs in the [Forbidden Forest](/features/the-forbidden-forest "The Forbidden Forest"). Grawp distracted the angry [centaurs](/features/centaurs "Centaurs") long enough for the youngsters to escape the forest and make their way to the showdown at the Department of Mysteries. Grawp also fought in and survived the [Battle of Hogwarts](/image/the-battle-of-hogwarts).

## With rebellion

Oh, good old *Potterwatch*: the secret radio show created by [Lee Jordan](/features/lee-jordan "Lee Jordan") that kept wizards updated on their friends’ whereabouts during the events of *Deathly Hallows*. 

While many at Hogwarts were cowering under [Snape](/features/severus-snape "Severus Snape") as headmaster, *Potterwatch* said that Hagrid had held a ‘Support Harry Potter’ party in his [house](/features/hagrids-hut "Hagrid's hut"), narrowly escaping arrest. Of course, he was unaware that Harry would hear about the party himself, giving him the next best thing to a hug from his favourite gamekeeper.
