## Gryffindor

[Gryffindor](https://www.wizardingworld.com/collections/gryffindor) house is where you would find the pluckiest and most daring students (there’s a reason the house symbol is the brave lion). The house colours are scarlet and gold, the common room lies up in Gryffindor Tower and the Head of House is Professor Minerva McGonagall. 

If the Sorting Hat placed you here, you would have demonstrated qualities like courage, bravery and determination. Some of the wizarding world’s best and brightest belonged to this house – Harry Potter and Albus Dumbledore are just a couple that spring to mind!

If you are lucky enough to end up in Gryffindor, we imagine you’re the type of person who likes to stand up for the little guy, challenges authority, has a tendency to act first and think later, is known as a class clown and takes board games very seriously.

## Slytherin

[Slytherin](https://www.wizardingworld.com/collections/slytherin) house has an unfortunate reputation. While it is true that a lot of dark witches and wizards were sorted into Slytherin, not all who belong to this house are bad. In fact, there are a lot of excellent qualities the Sorting Hat looks for in potential Slytherins and Merlin himself even belonged to this misunderstood house! 

The house colours for Slytherin are silver and emerald green and the emblem is a serpent. The Head of House is Professor Severus Snape, and the common room can be found down in the dungeons under the lake (which only adds to the Slytherin air of mystery). 

If the Sorting Hat placed you in this noble house, then you are most likely ambitious, shrewd and possibly destined for greatness. We can imagine you’re the kind of person who is always one step ahead, has a dark sense of humour, thinks reputation is important, takes pride in their appearance and doesn’t let anyone see their soft side.

## Ravenclaw

If you are looking for the brainiest students – you would find them in [Ravenclaw](https://www.wizardingworld.com/collections/ravenclaw) (with a couple of notable exceptions like Hermione Granger). The Ravenclaw colours are blue and bronze, the emblem is an eagle, the Head of House is Professor Filius Flitwick and the common room sits at the top of Ravenclaw Tower behind an enchanted knocker.

The Sorting Hat would only put you in this house if you demonstrated excellent wisdom, wit and a skill for learning. Ravenclaws are often known for being quite eccentric and most of the great wizarding inventors and innovators have come from this house.

We can imagine that you would get to sit up in Ravenclaw Tower, while surveying the excellent views, if you’re the type of person who analyses everything, is an overachiever, can be described as away with the fairies, is not afraid to be an individual and has a head stuffed full of interesting facts.

## Hufflepuff

[Hufflepuff](https://www.wizardingworld.com/collections/hufflepuff) is where you will find the most trustworthy and hardworking students. In fact, out of all the houses Hufflepuff has produced the least number of dark witches and wizards. The badger is the symbol of this house, the colours are yellow and black, the Head of House is Professor Pomona Sprout and the common room can be found near the kitchens in Hogwarts.

There is an idea that Hufflepuffs are the least clever of all Hogwarts students – but that is not true. Hufflepuffs are just the most humble of all the houses and don’t feel the need to shout about their achievements in the same way as the others.

If you were lucky enough to be sorted into this house, we can imagine you’re the type of person who has a strong moral compass, always works hard, is the most loyal friend, knows it is the taking part that counts and always has the best snacks.

It can’t be easy growing up in the shadow of a famous ancestor, especially when you’ve chosen the same career. Poor Sybill is always going to be compared to her lauded forebear, the Seer Cassandra Trelawney, and she’s all too aware of it.

Although she fervently believes in her own skill, there’s a part of her that must know the truth: she’s not as naturally talented as she professes to be.

Fascinatingly, although she has actually inherited the second sight from her great-great grandmother, she simply isn’t aware of it. She has no recollection of her trances that result in monumental predictions, and dismisses anyone who repeats her own foretellings. Incredibly, she doesn’t have any idea that she made the prophecy that sealed Harry’s fate.

On the surface, many of her day-to-day predictions are completely random and have little resonance, but if you dig a little deeper they do tend to come true, just in a slightly roundabout way. The problem with Sybill is that she doesn’t seem to have a good grasp of her gifts, which leads her to misinterpret the things she sees or reads in tea leaves.

Perhaps that’s why she feels the need to create such an eccentric persona for herself; one thing’s for sure, she certainly likes to make an impression.

She has a carefully crafted image, with her oversized magnifying glasses, wild hair and fondness for shiny shawls layered over her thin frame. She might imagine herself to be a mysterious, all-seeing Diviner but the overall look is rather more reminiscent of a ‘large, glittering insect’, as Harry imagined her – no one is going to forget her in a hurry! She’s pretty terrifying at first glance.

Her quirky style doesn’t stop there either; her claustrophobic tower-top loft is an extension of herself, with vast draperies and fragrant vapours, giving off an otherworldly aura.

Therein lies the problem with Sybill: she tries too hard. Her skill isn’t respected enough to speak for itself so she does her best to portray what she fancies a true Diviner should be. The result is often a little bit bonkers.

Harry’s first class under her tutelage is more of a performance than a lesson and it’s clear from the start that she delights in shock value. Her horrified pronouncement that Harry would meet his end in the not-too-distant future becomes even more interesting when Professor McGonagall reveals that it’s not an unusual occurrence.

It’s unclear whether Sybill truly believes that Harry is doomed – it’s more likely to be a calculating move on her part to ensure she has the attention and respect of her new class.

She’s also hilarious.

She’s either in tune with some wavelength we don’t fully comprehend or has a secret, excellent sense of humour.

That’s what’s so entertaining about Sybill Trelawney: she comes across almost ethereal as though she’s fluttering on the edges of reality, but she can be sharp, funny and calculating. Yet she’s very defensive and over-sensitive about the sincerity of her talents; she’s so flustered and upset by Umbridge’s interrogation that she turns to the cooking sherry. It’s hard not to feel sorry for her when she’s throwing out increasingly wild and random ‘predictions’ in order to prove her worth. She seems to show her true self when she feels under threat, especially if her gift is under scrutiny. Her dreamy, gentle manner is quickly replaced by a much harsher one and she becomes abrupt and accusatory.

Her relationship with her students is similar; Sybill only really warms to those who show the appropriate amount of admiration and respect for both herself and her subject, and she takes an immediate dislike to logical Hermione. Instead she favours Lavender and Parvati who positively fawn over her, and she blossoms under their attention.

It all comes back to her desire to be recognised. Although she may seem oblivious to what’s going on around her, too busy wrapped up in her tea-leaves and tarot cards, she must be aware of her reputation among staff and students.

Widely thought to be a fraud, Sybill is often met with sarcasm and disbelief from other teachers who find her either unsettling or irritating, and she doesn’t seem to have any real friends. She doesn’t seem too bothered. In fact, she considers herself far superior to her unenlightened colleagues. Perhaps that’s why she keeps herself closeted away in her tower, rarely descending the ladder to dine with others – she’s the ultimate loner by choice.

Not that she minds. Sybill finds comfort in her gift and is often carrying her cards or muttering ominous predictions under her breath when she does deign to venture out into the castle.

Despite her spiky edges there’s something fragile and childlike about the Divination professor, seen especially that time when Umbridge gleefully tried to chuck her out of the castle. Her terror and utter despair made her more relatable than she’s ever been, and her love of Hogwarts couldn’t be clearer.

And when the castle was breached, she didn’t hide away in her tower: she got stuck in, hurling crystal balls at Death Eaters with surprising ferocity.

She’s a mass of contradictions and although she may not be the most popular Hogwarts resident, she has to be given recognition for one thing at least: she’s the only teacher who’s managed to send Hermione storming out of a classroom.

According to Professor Binns, Godric, Helga, Salazar and Rowena ‘built this castle together, far from prying Muggle eyes’. For the most part, the four worked on creating Hogwarts in harmony, but it wasn’t long before Salazar Slytherin’s troubling views on the wizarding world caused an almighty rift.

But what of the founders’ individual stories? 

## Godric Gryffindor

‘Bold Gryffindor, from wild moor’ dwelled at Godric’s Hollow, the future home of many well-known Harry Potter characters, from Bathilda Bagshot to the Potters themselves. 

Much like the Hogwarts house he founded, Gryffindor, Godric was known for his bravery, and his skills as an accomplished dueller. He even had a [special sword](/writing-by-jk-rowling/the-sword-of-gryffindor "The Sword of Gryffindor by J.K. Rowling") created for him by Ragnuk the First, the finest of the goblin silversmiths. The sword was ‘gleaming silver’ with ‘rubies the size of eggs’. The sword was so beautiful that Ragnuk tried to take it back, accusing Godric of stealing it. Thankfully, Godric was not one to be trifled with, and eventually took back what was his from the goblin community. This didn’t stop the goblins creating a ‘fake myth’ of Gryffindor theft, however.

Legend has it that Godric was also the man who gave Hogwarts the Sorting Hat, a sentient piece of headwear that soon became the one to sort the school’s students into houses long after Godric and the other founders were gone. The hat contains the intelligence of all founders, so it can pass on their intuition on each Hogwarts student forever.

Godric will always be known for his accomplished skills in battle, and his fight against Muggle discrimination in the wizarding world. In fact, it was a serious argument between Godric and Salazar that finally made the Slytherin founder leave Hogwarts. Godric was a man, certainly, ahead of his time.

## Helga Hufflepuff

Helga, ‘from valley broad’, was the founder of the house which valued those that were ‘just and loyal’. According to the [Sorting Hat](/writing-by-jk-rowling/the-sorting-hat "The Sorting Hat by J.K. Rowling"), Helga vowed to ‘teach the lot’ – and didn’t judge certain students over others, no matter how much talent they had or what families they came from.

At Hogwarts, Hufflepuff was known for her talents in Charms, and used her remarkable skills for preparing food – a speciality of hers – to create splendid feasts that were enjoyed by all. Her talent would bring the whole school together in harmony.

Helga Hufflepuff’ fantastic recipes are still used in the Hogwarts kitchens to this day and her portrait can be found in the [Hufflepuff common room](/writing-by-jk-rowling/hufflepuff-common-room "Hufflepuff Common Room by J.K. Rowling"), toasting her students with her golden cup. No wonder the Hogwarts feasts are always so triumphant and bountiful. 

And as for that golden cup? Well, that very cup would be passed down to Helga’s descendants, eventually falling into the hands of one Hepzibah Smith, a ‘distantly descended’ witch with a penchant for possessing valuable trinkets. Unluckily for her, a young fellow called Tom Riddle was well aware of this, and once he had hold of it, Helga’s trusty cup engraved with a badger would become one of Lord Voldemort’s [Horcruxes](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/history-of-voldemorts-horcruxes). 

## Salazar Slytherin

For many years, all was well among the four founders. Yet when shrewd Salazar Slytherin, ‘from fen’, suggested that only those from [magical families](/writing-by-jk-rowling/pure-blood "Pure-Blood by J.K. Rowling") deserved to come to Hogwarts, his three friends stood against him. 

Salazar Slytherin left the school. Before he did however, he built a [secret room](/writing-by-jk-rowling/chamber-of-secrets "Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling") inside the castle with a great statue of himself and a monster inside that only he could control. 

The chamber would remain a secret, until Salazar Slytherin’s heir came to Hogwarts, ready to finish his ancestor’s work. Slytherin also left behind a golden locket, which would become a treasured family heirloom, and eventually a Horcrux of Lord Voldemort too.

Despite his flaws, Salazar was a talented wizard, skilled in Legilemency and [Parseltongue](/features/everything-you-didnt-know-about-parseltongue "Everything you didn’t know about Parseltongue"), and his twisted legacy and talents lived on through many members of his bloodline, specifically Lord Voldemort. Thankfully, his hostile nature towards Muggle-borns was something that not many of the wizarding community agreed with. And not all of Salazar’s legacy was bad. A very distant descendant of his, [Isolt Sayre](/features/most-bizarre-things-we-learned-from-the-fantastic-beasts-textbook "Isolt Sayre"), would go on to find [Ilvermorny School](/features/ilvermorny-school-of-witchcraft-and-wizardry "Ilvermorny"), and Salazar’s wand would eventually be buried in the school’s grounds, turning into a snakewood tree with leaves with restorative powers.

## Rowena Ravenclaw

Rowena Ravenclaw, ‘from glen’, was the most brilliant witch of her time, but her story is one of tragedy. Known for her wit and love of learning, she wore a diadem that was said to grant wisdom to the wearer. 

However, Rowena’s own daughter grew jealous of her mother’s incredible intelligence. Helena Ravenclaw stole her mother’s diadem and ran away, a fact that Rowena kept hidden from her fellow founders even when she fell ill.

Desperate to see her daughter one last time, Rowena sent a man to bring Helena home. Unfortunately, that man was the Bloody Baron, who was head over heels with Helena, and stabbed her in a rage when she refused to come home. After Helena was tragically killed, legend tells us that Rowena Ravenclaw died of a broken heart. No wonder Helena’s ghost, that became Ravenclaw’s house ghost, would often roam the corridors in silence.

## ‘The Second War Begins’

In *Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’s* conclusion, Harry lost Sirius and our hearts were broken yet again. ‘The Second War Begins’ was important because it represented the fallout from Sirius’s death and was a moment where a bit of positivity seemed impossible.

Enter Luna. After Harry chose not to attend the Leaving Feast, he bumped into Luna in a Hogwarts corridor. She was putting up posters asking for the return of her belongings, which had, once more, been hidden and Luna was typically calm about it.

Having just lost Sirius Harry was, initially, in no mood to talk to her, but Luna was both characteristically calming and intriguing. Overall it was a brief encounter but one that was very crucial to the development of Luna and even Harry.

> ‘How come you’re not at the feast?’ Harry asked.  
> ‘Well, I’ve lost most of my possessions,’ said Luna serenely. ‘People take them and hide them, you know. But as it’s the last night, I really do need them back, so I’ve been putting up signs.’  
> She gestured towards the noticeboard, upon which, sure enough, she had pinned a list of all her missing books and clothes, with a plea for their return.

## Why it matters

‘The Second War Begins’ was important as it gave us a glimpse into Luna’s life and background that we otherwise hadn’t seen before. Details about Luna’s home life, her parents and who she hung around with were sprinkled in through the series, and ‘The Second War Begins’ was the first time Luna talked about her mother.

> ‘Have you…’ he began. ’I mean, who… has anyone you known ever died?’ <br>
> ’Yes,’ said Luna simply, ‘my mother. She was quite an extraordinary witch, you know, but she did like to experiment and one of her spells went rather badly wrong one day. I was nine.’ <br>

Luna had long been the perfect sounding board for so many Hogwarts students, especially Harry. She had an almost psychic idea of what other people were going through that she knew exactly what to say. And it was never meaningless or cliché, it was the truth, and her encounter with Harry after Sirius died was just another example of this.

As you would expect with someone whose nickname is ‘Loony’, Luna was a deeply eccentric but also deeply empathetic person. Her ability to recognise another person’s need for comfort or company is what makes her such a memorable and brilliant character.

The exact impact of Luna witnessing her mother Pandora’s death is unknown, but Luna always did seem wiser beyond her years. Growing up with just her dad seemed to have given Luna an openness to the world, and the power to believe in extraordinary things.

No wonder Harry, a boy who faced so much death and tragedy in his life, seemed comfortable talking to only Luna about the death of Sirius. Her melancholy acceptance of her own mother’s death seemed to calm him.

> ‘... That man the Death Eaters killed was your godfather, wasn’t he? Ginny told me.’<br>  
> Harry nodded curtly, but found that for some reason he did not mind Luna talking about Sirius. He had just remembered that she, too, could see Thestrals.

Luna’s optimism and investment in slightly fanciful ideas were what allowed her to reach out to people when they needed someone like her most. In ‘The Second War Begins’, Luna said that Harry would be reunited with Sirius when he died and likewise with her and her mother.

It was an uplifting thing to say when Harry was in such a dark place. It didn’t take away from the fact Sirius was gone, but it left Harry with a feeling of optimism. Luna had opened up the possibility that he may see his godfather again and while it was only a *possibility*, it represented hope.

Luna Lovegood was someone who got picked on and teased and generally mistreated by a lot of Hogwarts students. But she never let that stop her living her best self. Luna went around imparting the kind of quirky optimism she gave Harry in ‘The Second War Begins’, bettering the people around her.

And, in dark times, people like Luna are exactly what we need.
