## That time... she read *The Quibbler* upside down like it was completely normal

The first time Harry ever set eyes on Luna Lovegood she had ‘her wand behind her left ear for safekeeping’ and was wearing a ‘necklace of Butterbeer corks’. But perhaps the oddest thing of all was that she was reading her magazine – *The Quibbler* – upside down. It was certainly a brave look for a Hogwarts Express journey, but then it just about summed Luna up. A brave, wacky individual who was always herself, no matter what anyone thought.

## That time... she warned Harry about Nargles in mistletoe

What are Nargles? Nobody really knows, apart from Luna that is. We don’t know about you but Luna has changed mistletoe forever for us. Not only does the traditional Christmas foliage remind us of our favourite dreamy Ravenclaw, but we will now inevitably point out when under any mistletoe: ‘probably full of Nargles’ and – just like Harry – thoroughly confuse anyone in the vicinity.

## That time... she wore those fetching Spectrespecs

In a heartwarming mirroring of the first time Harry met Luna in *Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix*, a year later in H*arry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince* Harry sat with Luna and Neville again on his way to Hogwarts on the train. This time, instead of being embarrassed by them, he chose to sit with them in a compartment rather than with others:* ‘You are cool,’ said Harry shortly. ‘None of them was at the Ministry. They didn’t fight with me.’* That being said, Luna was sporting some very interesting Spectrespecs – glasses that supposedly allowed the wearer to see Wrackspurts – invisible creatures that ‘float in through your ears and make your brain go fuzzy’. Another stand-out style choice from the queen of individuality.

## That time... she laughed at Ron’s joke for wayyyy too long

We all know Ron Weasley’s a hoot a minute, but there are limits to even his joke-cracking abilities. Granted, his gag about Goyle looking like a ‘baboon’s backside’ was pretty funny but maybe not quite as funny as Luna Lovegood found it. She ‘let out a scream of mirth that caused Hedwig to wake up and flap her wings indignantly and Crookshanks to leap up into the luggage rack, hissing. Luna laughed so hard her magazine slipped out of her grasp, slid down her legs and on to the floor.’
 
## That time... she commentated the Hufflepuff vs Gryffindor Quidditch match

From forgetting the names of players, to pointing out ‘interestingly shaped clouds’, to being ‘singularly uninterested in such mundane things as the score’, Luna commentating the disastrous Hufflepuff vs Gryffindor Quidditch match in *Half-Blood Prince* had to be one of the most unexpected and hilarious moments of the whole series.  

Ron said of the hilarious commentary: ‘I hope Luna always commentates from now on...’ and we whole heartedly agree. And if you don’t, you’ve probably got a case of ‘Loser’s Lurgy’ just like Luna diagnosed for Zacharias Smith during the match. 

## That time... she wore those radish earrings 
 
Yes, you read that right. They were earrings, they were radishes and they were orange. What a look! At least if Luna ever got hungry, she had a healthy snack hanging from her ears to nibble on. We included this moment for more than just the radishes though. The first time Harry noticed Luna’s radish earrings was also when she randomly declared her belief in him: 

> Luna took a great breath and then said, without so much as a preliminary hello, ‘I believe He Who Must Not Be Named is back and I believe you fought him and escaped from him.’<br>

We sometimes wish we could wear our hearts on our sleeves as wonderfully as Luna Lovegood.  

## That time... she wore a roaring Gryffindor lion hat 
 
> ‘I’m supporting Gryffindor,’ said Luna, pointing unnecessarily at her hat. ‘Look what it does...’ She reached up and tapped the hat with her wand. It opened its mouth wide and gave an extremely realistic roar that made everyone in the vicinity jump.<br>

## That time... she warned everyone about the Rotfang Conspiracy

This had to be one of Luna’s wackiest moments of all. In conversation with Harry, Slughorn and Snape at Slughorn’s party, she became very concerned about Harry’s desire to become an Auror. The reason for this? According to Luna, the Aurors were actually ‘part of the Rotfang Conspiracy’. What did this mean, we hear you ask? Luna told the group that the Aurors were ‘working from within to bring down the Ministry of Magic using a combination of Dark magic and gum disease.’ Wow, just wow.

## When she called Harry out for being rude

When Harry was busy shouting and preparing to charge off to the Department of Mysteries because he mistakenly believed Sirius was in danger, the last person he might have expected to deal with was Luna Lovegood. But, just as Hermione forced him to slow down and at least check whether the Voldemort-planted vision of Sirius he’d had was real (ahem), Luna’s words – simple as they were – also made him pause for a moment.

*‘You’re being rather rude, you know,’* was all Luna said, after Harry had abruptly shut down Ginny’s offer of help and continued to shout at Hermione. And of course, she was right. Harry might have been stressed, anxious and desperate to get going, but his refusal to acknowledge anyone else during such moments often cost him dear. Maybe he should have been a bit more willing to listen.

## When she showed how self-aware she was

Later, after Sirius’s death and Dumbledore’s revelations about the prophecy, Harry was angry and deep in grief. Unable to face the End of Term feast celebrations, Luna once again provided him with an alternative perspective:

*‘Oh … well …’ she shrugged. ‘I think they think I’m a bit odd, you know. Some people call me “Loony” Lovegood, actually.’*

This comment made it clear that, although Luna always appeared calm and unruffled, it wasn’t because she didn’t know what other people thought of her – it was because she didn’t care. She was clear-sighted about herself, which also meant she was able to empathise with others. It was, after all, Luna who provided Harry with the only real words of comfort he heard after Sirius’s death. 

*‘Oh, come on. You heard them, just behind the veil, didn’t you?’*

*‘You mean …’*

*‘In that room with the archway. They were just lurking out of sight, that’s all. You heard them.’*

## When she pointed out that people didn’t expect her to be friends with Harry

Luna displayed that calm self-acceptance again, when she and Neville joined Harry onboard the Hogwarts Express and were faced with the giggles of Romilda Vane and her friends.

*‘People expect you to have cooler friends than us,’ said Luna, once again displaying her knack for embarrassing honesty.*

The companionship she’d found during the DA meetings meant a lot to Luna – she said that the meetings were ‘like having friends,’ and decorated her room with pictures of Harry, Hermione, Ron, Neville and Ginny – but, again, she knew how other people viewed her, and she didn’t let it bother her. Luna always faced things head on, no matter how uncomfortable it might be.

## When she identified Ron’s potential for unkindness 

Luna wasn’t just aware of her own behaviour. She was also observant about others, as Ron might attest. When he started going out with Lavender Brown and consequently fell out with Hermione, Luna was one of the few people to point out that Ron was behaving pretty badly.

*‘He says very funny things sometimes, doesn’t he?’ said Luna, as they set off down the corridor together. ‘But he can be a bit unkind. I noticed that last year.’*

Now look: we love Ron but, once again, Luna had a point.

## When she eulogised Dobby so perfectly

And yet, Luna’s honesty wasn’t always embarrassing. The sweet, simple words she said over Dobby’s grave after he’d rescued them from Malfoy Manor were perfectly delivered and said everything that was needed.

There aren’t many who can see through the effects of Polyjuice Potion. Barty Crouch junior managed to stay disguised as Mad-Eye Moody, right under the nose of Dumbledore, for nearly an entire school year! However, the sharp and perceptive Luna was instantly able to see through Harry’s disguise as ‘Cousin Barny’ at Bill and Fleur's wedding…

## When she knew immediately that Harry was talking about the diadem
Luna’s knowledge of the weird and wonderful aspects of the wizarding world was certainly vast. So, it was no surprise that she was the first one to realise that Harry was looking for Rowena Ravenclaw’s diadem.

>‘There’s something we need to find,’ Harry said. ‘Something – something that’ll help us overthrow You-Know-Who. It’s here at Hogwarts, but we don’t know where. It might have belonged to Ravenclaw. Has anyone heard of an object like that? Has anyone ever come across something with her eagle on it, for instance?’

>He looked hopefully towards the little group of Ravenclaws, to Padma, Michael, Terry and Cho, but it was Luna who answered, perched on the arm of Ginny’s chair.

## When she spoke to Harry about grief
Loss and grief are very difficult concepts to grasp – no matter your age. Having lost both his parents and Sirius, Harry was no stranger to it. There weren’t many his age who could fully understand what that was like. Luna could. Not only that, but she spoke about loss in a way that was wise, intelligent, measured and quite surprising for a teenager.

>‘Anyway... why aren’t you at the feast?’

>Harry shrugged. ‘Just didn’t feel like it.’

>‘No,’ said Luna, observing him with those oddly misty, protuberant eyes. ‘I don’t suppose you do. That man the Death Eaters killed was your godfather, wasn’t he? Ginny told me.’

>Harry nodded curtly, but found that for some reason he did not mind Luna talking about Sirius. He had just remembered that she, too, could see Thestrals.

## Her uncanny ability to read people
One way in which Luna was clever was her perceptiveness. She had a knack for seeing things in people that others often missed. She was the one to notice that Harry needed to slip away at the end of the Battle of Hogwarts. She was the one to see straight through Harry’s Polyjuice Potion disguise. And she was the one who was unafraid to sum Ron up so succinctly…

>‘She’s a bit upset,’ said Luna. ‘I thought at first it was Moaning Myrtle in there, but it turned out to be Hermione. She said something about that Ron Weasley ...’

## Her ingenious solutions to problems
When Harry believed Sirius was in danger, he desperately tried to think of a way to get to the Ministry of Magic to rescue him. Yet he and everyone else he was with drew a blank. It was Luna who used her creative and out of the box thinking to come up with a solution. We doubt it would ever have crossed Harry, Ron or Hermione’s minds…

>‘Well, it doesn’t matter, anyway,’ said Harry frustratedly, ‘because we still don’t know how to get there –’

## The way she shows more maturity than many of her peers
Teenagers can be cruel, and many were towards Luna. They called her names and teased her for her seemingly ditzy personality. And even though she shouldn’t have had to put up with any of it, Luna managed to rise above and not let the criticism get to her. Ultimately, this made her seem much more mature and intelligent than those who were mean to her.

Ravenclaw house is known for taking the brightest students and Luna was no exception. She might have seemed like a daydreamer but that didn’t mean she wasn’t also a quick thinker. The ease with which she solved the riddle to enter Ravenclaw’s common room demonstrated that…

>Luna reached out a pale hand, which looked eerie floating in mid-air, unconnected to arm or body. She knocked once, and in the silence it sounded to Harry like a cannon blast. At once the beak of the eagle opened, but instead of a bird’s call, a soft, musical voice said, ‘Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?’

## ‘The Second War Begins’

In *Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’s* conclusion, Harry lost Sirius and our hearts were broken yet again. ‘The Second War Begins’ was important because it represented the fallout from Sirius’s death and was a moment where a bit of positivity seemed impossible.

Enter Luna. After Harry chose not to attend the Leaving Feast, he bumped into Luna in a Hogwarts corridor. She was putting up posters asking for the return of her belongings, which had, once more, been hidden and Luna was typically calm about it.

Having just lost Sirius Harry was, initially, in no mood to talk to her, but Luna was both characteristically calming and intriguing. Overall it was a brief encounter but one that was very crucial to the development of Luna and even Harry.

> ‘How come you’re not at the feast?’ Harry asked.  
> ‘Well, I’ve lost most of my possessions,’ said Luna serenely. ‘People take them and hide them, you know. But as it’s the last night, I really do need them back, so I’ve been putting up signs.’  
> She gestured towards the noticeboard, upon which, sure enough, she had pinned a list of all her missing books and clothes, with a plea for their return.

## Why it matters

‘The Second War Begins’ was important as it gave us a glimpse into Luna’s life and background that we otherwise hadn’t seen before. Details about Luna’s home life, her parents and who she hung around with were sprinkled in through the series, and ‘The Second War Begins’ was the first time Luna talked about her mother.

> ‘Have you…’ he began. ’I mean, who… has anyone you known ever died?’ <br>
> ’Yes,’ said Luna simply, ‘my mother. She was quite an extraordinary witch, you know, but she did like to experiment and one of her spells went rather badly wrong one day. I was nine.’ <br>

Luna had long been the perfect sounding board for so many Hogwarts students, especially Harry. She had an almost psychic idea of what other people were going through that she knew exactly what to say. And it was never meaningless or cliché, it was the truth, and her encounter with Harry after Sirius died was just another example of this.

As you would expect with someone whose nickname is ‘Loony’, Luna was a deeply eccentric but also deeply empathetic person. Her ability to recognise another person’s need for comfort or company is what makes her such a memorable and brilliant character.

The exact impact of Luna witnessing her mother Pandora’s death is unknown, but Luna always did seem wiser beyond her years. Growing up with just her dad seemed to have given Luna an openness to the world, and the power to believe in extraordinary things.

No wonder Harry, a boy who faced so much death and tragedy in his life, seemed comfortable talking to only Luna about the death of Sirius. Her melancholy acceptance of her own mother’s death seemed to calm him.

> ‘... That man the Death Eaters killed was your godfather, wasn’t he? Ginny told me.’<br>  
> Harry nodded curtly, but found that for some reason he did not mind Luna talking about Sirius. He had just remembered that she, too, could see Thestrals.

Luna’s optimism and investment in slightly fanciful ideas were what allowed her to reach out to people when they needed someone like her most. In ‘The Second War Begins’, Luna said that Harry would be reunited with Sirius when he died and likewise with her and her mother.

It was an uplifting thing to say when Harry was in such a dark place. It didn’t take away from the fact Sirius was gone, but it left Harry with a feeling of optimism. Luna had opened up the possibility that he may see his godfather again and while it was only a *possibility*, it represented hope.

Luna Lovegood was someone who got picked on and teased and generally mistreated by a lot of Hogwarts students. But she never let that stop her living her best self. Luna went around imparting the kind of quirky optimism she gave Harry in ‘The Second War Begins’, bettering the people around her.

And, in dark times, people like Luna are exactly what we need.

It’s amazing that a person as kind and bright as Luna Lovegood only made her first appearance in *Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix*. Described as ‘Loony Lovegood’ with dirty blonde hair and protuberant eyes, she didn’t get a particularly flattering introduction and many people avoided her, thanks to her odd mannerisms. 

However, her personality was as warm as it was weird, and without her Harry and his friends would have often been in a lot of trouble. Here are 12 moments where Luna’s kindness really shone through:

1.  In spite of having her father’s magazine insulted by Hermione and being laughed at behind her back by Ginny, Luna kindly carried Ron’s owl off the train when it was time to leave. Harry was so absorbed in his own thoughts he completely forgot about her and called her ‘that Luna girl’ when Ron asked for his things.  

2. She was quick to reassure Harry when he saw the Thestrals for the first time. He may not have appreciated it much then, but Luna made him realise he was not alone in seeing strange animals where others could not.  

3. Harry had a lot on his plate in the fifth book; many people refused to believe Harry when he said he saw Voldemort come back from the dead. He was painted as an attention-seeking liar; he was often angry and upset. Luna walked straight up to him and said: ‘I believe He Who Must Not Be Named is back and I believe you fought him and escaped from him.’ In front of everyone.  

4. Ron was so nervous about playing as Keeper for Gryffindor that he looked at his cereal as if he wanted to drown in it. Ravenclaw Luna wished him good luck, while showing her support in the shape of a huge Gryffindor lion hat. Supportive *and* a fashion statement.

5. In the Department of Mysteries, it was Luna who saved Ginny and Ron from Death Eaters using the Reductor Curse. Ginny’s ankle was broken and Ron had been hit by a spell that made him a little funny in the head. Luna kept hers, though, and got all three of them out alive.  

6. Harry found Luna putting up notices asking people to return her lost possessions. She asked him why he was not at the feast and when he explained he didn’t feel like it, she immediately understood and said exactly the right things to make him feel better, lessening the ‘terrible weight in his stomach’.  

7. In *Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince*, when Hermione was upset about Ron and Lavender, it was Luna who found her in the bathroom and offered her comfort and support.  

8. At Dumbledore’s funeral, she was the one who helped a devastated Neville into his chair. A simple act that cemented their friendship.

9. It was Luna who carefully tended to Mr Ollivander in the prison cell where they were trapped in *Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows*. She kept everyone together, stayed positive and upbeat and showed strength of character that was extraordinary. Ollivander was so grateful he sent her a new wand.  

10.  When Dobby died, Luna reached out and closed his eyes. It was a kind and gentle thing to do, showing such respect for the house elf who saved them all. ‘There,’ she said softly. ‘Now he could be sleeping.’ If that moment didn’t make you cry, nothing will…  

11. Luna put sea lavender in a jam jar on Dobby’s grave. In a world where house-elves are often overlooked, it was a telling kindness.  

12. Luna appeared beside Harry at the end, when Voldemort was dead, as he sat on a bench, exhausted and drained. She looked at him and knew exactly what he needed. She distracted everyone so he could slip on his cloak and disappear somewhere private. It was an act of quiet kindness and summed up exactly why she is such a beloved character.

## She is perceptive
Ravenclaws are perceptive, and Luna noticed all kinds of things others didn’t during her time at Hogwarts. There was that time she explained Ron in one sentence: ‘He says very funny things sometimes, doesn’t he?’ said Luna, as they set off down the corridor together. ‘But he can be a bit unkind. I noticed that last year.’ As well as when she actually saw through Polyjuice Potion when Harry had taken it to pretend to be Ron’s relation, Barny Weasley. Sometimes her perception, combined with her wisdom, went even deeper. Who else wept when she noticed that Harry needed a little helping hand after the drama of the Battle of Hogwarts? 

*‘Harry found himself sitting on a bench beside Luna.
‘I’d want some peace and quiet, if it were me,’ she said.
‘I’d love some,’ he replied.
‘I’ll distract them all,’ she said. ‘Use your Cloak.’
And before he could say a word she had cried, ‘Oooh, look, a Blibbering Humdinger!’ and pointed out of the window.’*


## She is full of wisdom
Luna might be wacky – remember those radish earrings? – but that doesn’t mean she’s short of wisdom, quite the opposite. We’re thinking in particular about that moment she talked to Harry about grief and loss, after Sirius was killed at the Ministry of Magic. She shared the personal story of her mum’s death at a time Harry really needed to hear it, and reminded him that the ones we love never truly leave us: 

*‘Yes, it was rather horrible,’ said Luna conversationally. ‘I still feel very sad about it sometimes. But I’ve still got Dad. And anyway, it’s not as though I’ll never see Mum again, is it?’
‘Er – isn’t it?’ said Harry uncertainly.
She shook her head in disbelief.
‘Oh, come on. You heard them, just behind the veil, didn’t you?’
 ‘You mean ...’
‘In that room with the archway. They were just lurking out of sight, that’s all. You heard them.’*

But it’s not just emotions she has words of wisdom about, she was always prepared when it came to her habit of sleep walking: 

*‘I’ve never been to this part of the castle. At least not while awake. I sleep walk, you see. That’s why I wear shoes to bed.’*

## She is intelligent
Intelligence manifests itself in many different ways, and we think Luna has it in cauldrons. Let’s not forget that it was Luna who was able to help Harry find the lost diadem of Ravenclaw—an important part of the journey on the way to defeat Lord Voldemort. And she then went on to answer the Ravenclaw door knocker’s riddle as to whether the phoenix or the flame came first under immense pressure. Rather her than us! When it comes to magic, Luna’s taste might have been rather individual, but it must have taken some seriously impressive spell work to make her Gryffindor lion hat roar so realistically. 
When it came to her theories about Crumped-Horned Snorkacks or Nargles, they might not have been based on much evidence, but she argued for her point of view passionately. She wasn’t even scared to tell Hermione she was wrong! 

## She has sadness in her past, just like her house founder 
Part of the reason there is a debate about Luna’s house is due to the fact that she would have made a pretty excellent Hufflepuff. Luna’s loyalty and kindness – key Hufflepuff traits – really did know no bounds. Luna insisted on coming to the Ministry to help her fellow DA members – it was her idea to ride the Thestrals. And Luna was one of only two members of the DA who were loyal enough to answer the call of the charmed Galleons the night Malfoy let the Death Eaters into Hogwarts. There’s no denying these traits exist, but we’d argue that part of the reason Luna shows so much empathy is down to the sadness in her past. And this tragic backstory is something she shares with the Ravenclaw house founder, Rowena Ravenclaw.

Luna’s mother died suddenly when she was nine, when one of her spell experiments went badly wrong. Whilst Rowena’s daughter stole her diadem, and ended up being murdered by a man—the Bloody Baron—who rather than fetching Helena back as Rowena had thought, killed her. Perhaps the tragedies in their pasts meant Luna had an extra affinity with Ravenclaw house. Though we’ll never truly know the secrets of the Sorting Hat’s decisions. 
 

## She fits right in with other eccentric Ravenclaws
Wouldn’t you just love to listen to fellow Ravenclaws Luna and Professor Trelawney having tea together? And let’s not forget that Moaning Myrtle was in Ravenclaw too! Remember when she turned up in the Prefects’ bathroom and just casually watched Cedric and Harry have a bath? Thinking outside the box and being eccentric certainly go hand in hand, although not all Ravenclaws wore their eccentricity quite so well as Luna. Gilderoy Lockhart’s luscious locks and purple clothes couldn’t hide the fact that under it all he was stealing memories. Not cool, Gilderoy. Not cool.

Any Hogwarts house would have been lucky to count Luna Lovegood amongst its numbers, but with apologies to Gryffindor, Slytherin and Huffepuff – we reckon the Sorting Hat got it right with Ravenclaw! ## A true original 
One trait that Aquarians seem to share are their eccentric personalities. They are out-of-the-box thinkers, the ‘mad professors’ of the zodiac, the dreamers – the true originals. You won’t catch an Aquarian following the crowd. As the astrologer Joanna Martine Woolfolk said: ‘(Aquarians) like being different. You not only march to a different drummer, you make up new music as you go along.’ Just like Luna.

[Luna](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/luna-lovegood) was about as unique and eccentric as they come. Her mind worked in a way that was unlike any other. Whilst her friends thought about homework, she was musing over the ‘Rotfang Conspiracy’ (gum disease has never been so dangerous). When her peers were starting to worry about their love lives, she was pondering whether there might be Nargles in the mistletoe. Whilst others might stick to talking about the score and tactics while commentating on a [Quidditch](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/quidditch) match, she found that too mundane – admiring the shape of the clouds was much more fun. And this is just us scratching the surface when it comes to Luna’s eccentricity – nobody else was quite like her.
