While Harry may have been the one with his name on the book series, it was actually the enduring strength, talent and smarts of Hermione that saved the day on oh-so-many occasions.

Where do we begin? Solving the mysteries of the Chamber of Secrets while Petrified? Working into the early hours of the morning trying to help Harry figure out how to defeat a giant dragon? Withstanding torture from Bellatrix Lestrange, and endless prejudice for being Muggle-born? Modifying her parents’ memories so they forgot who she was, in order to protect them? Being a tower of strength for Harry when Ron got the jitters during their Horcrux camping trip, even though she was exhausted herself? In every book, [Hermione goes above and beyond](/features/why-harry-and-ron-would-never-have-got-so-far-without-hermione) – but the chapter we have picked to celebrate Hermione’s prowess happened rather early on, and involves a Hippogriff, a Patronus and a Time-Turner.

## Hermione’s Secret 

In *Prisoner of Azkaban*, Hermione spent the vast majority of her third year hidden behind a fort of books. Yep, give Hermione the choice to take on extra lessons and she will take on all of them. While it was compulsory for third-year Hogwarts students to take on some extra lessons, Hermione somehow filled her timetable beyond the point of logic, much to Ron’s continued bewilderment.

> ‘But look,’ said Ron, laughing, ‘see this morning? Nine o’clock, Divination. And underneath, nine o’clock, Muggle Studies. And –’ Ron leant closer to the timetable, disbelieving, ‘look – underneath that, Arithmancy, nine o’clock. I mean, I know you’re good, Hermione, but no one’s that good. How’re you supposed to be in three classes at once?’

Towards the end of *Prisoner of Azkaban*, Hermione revealed to Harry just how she managed to go to three classes at once. Yes, Ron, Hermione was that good; so good that Professor McGonagall had persuaded the Ministry of Magic to give her a Time-Turner. 

It was the combination of Hermione’s endless cleverness and this Time-Turner that ended up saving two lives in *Prisoner of Azkaban*. In fact, if Hermione hadn’t been so enthusiastic about learning everything, she would have never had a Time-Turner in the first place. This proved incredibly useful when Albus Dumbledore furtively suggested taking Harry back a few hours in time after a particularly dreadful day of revelations – the execution of Buckbeak, the reveal of Scabbers being Peter Pettigrew, and Sirius Black not being a murderer but still being caught by Dementors. Thankfully, Harry and Hermione got the chance to put things right.

Once Harry had got over the immense confusion of the Time-Turner experience, Hermione used intensely fast thinking to figure out how to save both Sirius and Buckbeak, all the while not bumping into her past self, and getting back to the hospital wing without anyone noticing. Only Hermione, at this point only in her third year, could have managed such a feat.

Grasping the intricacies of time travel aside, let’s not forget that Hermione had a miserable time in her third year. After adopting lovely Crookshanks (who turned out to be just as smart as Hermione, actually), Hermione was repeatedly chastised by Ron for her cat’s interest in Scabbers, leading to many fall-outs and many tears.

When Harry got a mysterious Firebolt sent to him, Hermione was the only one to suggest that it might have been given to him by Sirius Black. It made sense: at this point in the story, the Azkaban convict was known to be after him. 

However, all Harry and Ron were worried about was the broom being taken away from Harry by Professor McGonagall while it was checked for curses. As it turned out, Hermione wasn’t at all wrong about Sirius’s involvement. If you ask us, Harry and Ron should have made Hermione a massive ‘Sorry’ cake at the very least.

On top of all that, Hermione’s ambitions led her to be uncomfortably overwhelmed with work, needing actual time travel to make ends meet. This workload and the tension with Ron led to her being mostly isolated all year. In fact, Hermione got so wound up in *Prisoner of Azkaban* she even ended up punching Malfoy – another chapter that made us fall head over heels in love with her, obviously. 

Hermione and Harry’s Time-Turner adventure was the perfect moment that summed up how Hermione applied her studies and logic to real life. Remember, she figured out Lupin was a werewolf well before anyone else this year too, on top of all the stress, arguments and school work. 

Hermione worked impossibly hard, and then applied that Hogwarts knowledge to situations that could save lives. Without Hermione, Harry would have lost Sirius before he even properly got to know him, and Buckbeak would’ve never taken flight again.

And this was all before the days of Voldemort’s ascent, when Hermione achieved near-impossible things. However, before all that, this shining moment in *Prisoner of Azkaban* foreshadowed Hermione’s greatness to come: as a scholar, a lifesaver, and a damn good friend.

Oh, and for good measure, she passed all her third-year exams too.

As a kid, I was a bit of a… okay, a massive geek. While I am in no way saying my level of intellect is close to Hermione’s, or that I was the cleverest person in my year group at school, I loved to learn and threw myself into every experience, just like Hermione would. I always did my homework, raised my hand in lessons, joined the debate team, got to the national finals of a children’s literature quiz and even won a prize for making the most effort in all of my classes. Very reminiscent of Hermione collecting up Gryffindor house points! 

To begin with I didn’t feel ashamed – I adored trying new things and broadening my horizons. However, as I grew up, I started to realise it wasn’t cool to be so enthusiastic. The social side of school was rather difficult, and like Hermione, I didn’t have the easiest time making friends. When reading the Harry Potter books, I could always empathise with the way she managed to get on the wrong side of her peers – including those closest to her. After all, it was Ron that called her ‘a nightmare’ with no friends back in *Philosopher’s Stone*. To be honest, I am pretty sure similar words were said about me.

It wasn’t just my classmates that found me to be annoying, it was also some of my teachers. There was one that suggested at a parents’ evening that it might be a good idea if I just put my hand up less. That was a devastating blow to my confidence. Not only did it seem like my peers thought I was too much, now my teachers did too. Every time I re-read the moment where Snape called Hermione an ‘insufferable know-it-all', I felt it deeply. It transported me right back to that humiliating time where I felt that I had to make myself smaller and hide a big part of my personality.

Nevertheless, despite connecting with the tougher elements of Hermione’s experience while at school, I could always turn to the stories and to her character for comfort. It was great to find a character that had similar difficulties to me, but it was even better to find one which I could draw strength and inspiration from. I admired the way she handled those situations – and especially the way she kept going. 

Hermione kept on learning as much as she possibly could and had confidence in her abilities. She never allowed the people who called her a know-it-all or exasperating to stop her. From the moment she burst into Harry and Ron’s train carriage on the Hogwarts Express, she was unapologetically herself. In fact, if she had allowed the nastiness of others to influence her, then the wizarding world would probably have been a very different place. 

There were so many times that Hermione was the hero of the story and came to the rescue. In her very first year at Hogwarts, she was the one that figured out the mystery of Nicolas Flamel. In her second, she solved the puzzle of the Basilisk – long before Harry and Ron. In her third, she was allowed to use incredibly complex magic to travel in time so she could cram in more studying. Hermione was the one who really helped Harry get ready for the Triwizard Tournament. The formation of Dumbledore’s Army was her idea. And out of the golden trio, she was the one that managed to be the most prepared for the Horcrux hunt. What makes her more brilliant, is that these are merely a handful of examples of the fantastic things she did – they barely scratch the surface. If Hermione had let the critics get to her and squashed her talents, where would Harry and Ron have got to?

That’s not to say Hermione always brushed everything off easily – she still showed vulnerability which only made her seem more relatable. Sometimes the animosity she faced did get to her. The most memorable incident being when she hid in the girls’ bathroom in *Philosopher’s Stone*. As a child, that was often described as ‘sensitive’, that more human side of her was reassuring. She proved to me that it’s how you move forward from hurtful things that matter, there’s no shame or harm in admitting something has caused you pain, but nothing good comes from allowing anyone to keep you down for too long.

This attitude is something that I still try to mimic as an adult. No longer am I the kid who felt as though they needed to curb their personality to suit those around them. I fully embrace my nerdy side and I don’t care if people don’t appreciate that part of me. I still enjoy learning and I won’t pretend to be less intelligent to stroke the ego of others. Luckily, I have found that as I have grown up and moved on from the confines of school, people actually like that part of me – which I didn’t believe was possible as a teenager. 

I am also sure that I’m not the only one to take these lessons from this character. There will be plenty of other geeky folk that found it a struggle to find their place and fit in. Yet, Hermione will always be there to show that you should never be ashamed to embrace who you are. That is why the cleverest witch of her age continues to be my hero today.

## When she waited nearly seven years to unleash the perfect comeback
They say revenge is a dish best served cold – and we reckon that applies to sassy comebacks too. It certainly did in this case. When Harry, Ron and Hermione went through the trapdoor in Philosopher’s Stone, they quickly found themselves having to deal with the deadly Devil’s Snare, which led to this classic Ron remark. 

>‘Devil’s Snare, Devil’s Snare ... What did Professor Sprout say? It likes the dark and the damp –’
>
>‘So light a fire!’ Harry choked.
>
>‘Yes – of course – but there’s no wood!’ Hermione cried, wringing her hands.

## The infamous teaspoon comment
Hermione and Ron spent quite a lot of their time bickering. While Ron often seemed to have the upper hand when it came to snarky and amusing comments, this is one moment in which Hermione was truly victorious. Comparing Ron’s emotional intelligence to that of a teaspoon was not only inspired but hilarious.

>A slightly stunned silence greeted the end of this speech, then Ron said, ‘One person can’t feel all that at once, they’d explode.’

## When she told Scrimgeour what she didn’t plan to do when she left school
While we all know that Hermione was the cleverest witch of her age, we still can’t help but marvel at how quickly she could come up with a witty retort. Especially when that cheeky comment was made to the Minister for Magic himself. When Rufus Scrimgeour came to talk to the trio about the will of Albus Dumbledore, he probably didn’t expect that three teenagers would dare to be quite so cheeky. But he was wrong – and came across Hermione at her sassy best.

## When she gave Crabbe and Goyle a pair of special chocolate cakes 
Hermione may not have been trying to be funny here, but it still made us cackle. The matter-of-fact way in which she discussed slipping Crabbe and Goyle a Sleeping Draught, coupled with Harry and Ron’s reaction, made this moment unexpectedly comical. We love when Hermione’s determination bordered on terrifying – and this was no exception.

>‘I’ve got it all worked out,’ she went on smoothly, ignoring Harry and Ron’s stupefied faces. She held up two plump chocolate cakes. ‘I’ve filled these with a simple Sleeping Draught. All you have to do is make sure Crabbe and Goyle find them. You know how greedy they are, they’re bound to eat them. Once they’re asleep, pull out a few of their hairs and hide them in a broom cupboard.’

## When Hermione Confunded McLaggen
This is another excellent example of Hermione’s rule breaking turning into something comical. We know she shouldn’t have Confunded Cormac McLaggen – but her reaction was everything. Her defensiveness, along with her annoyance at Harry’s amusement, made this one of our favourite funny Hermione moments.

>‘What?’ said Hermione defensively.
>
>‘If you ask me,’ said Harry quietly, ‘McLaggen looks like he was Confunded. And he was standing right in front of where you were sitting.’

## When she had no time for Divination
Hermione and Divination were never going to be a match made in heaven. But her relationship with this subject was really quite amusing – especially her constant exasperation with Professor Trelawney. However, when Trelawney dared to call Hermione’s mind ‘hopelessly Mundane’, we knew it wouldn’t end well. But we didn’t expect that comment to lead to one of Hermione’s coolest and funniest moments. 

>‘Fine!’ said Hermione suddenly, getting up and cramming Unfogging the Future back into her bag. ‘Fine!’ she repeated, swinging the bag over her shoulder and almost knocking Ron off his chair. ‘I give up! I’m leaving!’

## When Fleur got on her nerves
Don’t get us wrong, Fleur is brilliant – but sometimes she could work on her tact. This would probably have been a good opportunity for her to do that. When Hermione was faced with a blackeye that wouldn’t budge, on the morning she was about to receive her O.W.L. results, the last thing she needed was Fleur’s input. However, it did give us another excellent Hermione retort.

>‘But it’s got to come off!’ squeaked Hermione. ‘I can’t go around looking like this for ever!’

## When she reminded Malfoy of the ferret incident
We always enjoy when Malfoy gets taken down a peg or two and Hermione certainly did that here. We can imagine it was very humiliating for Malfoy to have been turned into a ferret by the fake Mad-Eye Moody – and it would have put him on edge. Hermione clearly recognised this and used that incident as the perfect comeback to Malfoy calling her a Mudblood (again). We love that she used humour to take the power away from Malfoy… and all it took was a carefully placed wave and a pointed dig about ferrets. 

>Harry and Ron both whipped around, but Hermione said loudly, waving to somebody over Malfoy’s shoulder, ‘Hello, Professor Moody!’

## When she didn’t have time for Harry feeling sorry for himself 
Hermione has a reputation for being a bit uptight. But as this moment goes to show that reputation is somewhat unfair. Not only does Hermione try to lighten the mood here but does so by making a joke. We also adore the fact that she has no time for Harry feeling sorry for himself. When he responds with sarcasm to her attempt at humour, she manages to get the upper hand, putting Harry in his place and being unexpectedly funny in the process. 

>‘How’re you feeling?’ asked Hermione.
>
>‘Fine,’ said Harry stiffly.

>‘Oh, don’t lie, Harry,’ she said impatiently. ‘Ron and Ginny say you’ve been hiding from everyone since you got back from St Mungo’s.’

## When even the Minister for Magic is scared of her old Head of House
Hermione may have grown up to become Minister for Magic (and therefore one of the most powerful witches in Britain), but we love that she reverts right back to being a schoolkid in front of Professor McGonagall. The way in which she goes from confidently striding into McGonagall’s office to being threatened with detention is brilliant – and gave us a right old laugh.

## Book 1: Hermione Granger and the adventures that nearly got her expelled
Hermione Granger is thrilled to discover that she is a witch and starts her first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. On the way there she meets two infuriating boys – one who even had dirt on his nose – but little does she know that they will become a big part of her story. 

Being a very studious sort of person, she excels at everything but does have some difficulty making friends. Nevertheless, those two infuriating boys (Harry and Ron) become two of her closest chums after an incident in the girls’ bathroom involving a troll, *Wingardium Leviosa*, and lying to a teacher (which was the most painful part of that experience). 

The three of them embark on numerous adventures that could get them killed, or worse, expelled. This ends up with them protecting the Philosopher’s Stone from one very Dark wizard. That adventure led Hermione to demonstrate her logical side (a puzzling potions puzzle), her ruthless side (using the full Body-Bind spell on Neville) and proved that she was the cleverest witch of her age.

## Book 2: Hermione Granger and the time she solved the mystery before anyone else
Hermione Granger is back and ready to start her second year at Hogwarts. Now with her two best friends at her side, she truly does feel at home in the wizarding world. 

However, the Chamber of Secrets is opened. With a monster attacking Muggle-borns, Hermione finds herself in grave danger. Though that doesn’t stop her from being proactive about the situation. To help find the heir of Slytherin, she successfully brews Polyjuice Potion, which is way beyond the level of an ordinary second-year (even if the hair she used for her dose wasn’t puuurrfect). 

She also solves the mystery of what the creature is before anyone else. When disaster strikes! Hermione is Petrified before she can inform Harry and Ron that there is a Basilisk attacking students and using the school’s plumbing to move around. She ends up in the hospital wing for weeks before they figure it out. Luckily, she has left them some clues. Harry and Ron are able to piece it together, defeat the Basilisk and Hermione is back and raring to go – despite her disappointment at the cancellation of the end-of-year exams.

## Book 3: Hermione Granger and the year she did literally everything
Hermione’s third year at Hogwarts is set to be a very busy year for her. There’s an escaped murderer on the loose who appears to be after one her best friends. And there’s friction between her, Harry and Ron. Having bought the wonderful Crookshanks, she has to deal with Ron’s (unfair) hatred of her furry, ginger pet. And Harry is all snotty with her because she told Professor McGonagall about her legitimate concerns when a Firebolt arrived for him with no note.

Yet, that isn’t the only thing she has to contend with. As the brightest in her year, she has taken on more subjects than there are hours in the day. However, she is secretly entrusted a Time-Turner and so can be in two places at once.

She keeps it a secret from Harry and Ron for a long time. But after a particularly eventful night where she discovers Sirius Black is not a murderer, her half-cat half-Kneazle is an excellent judge of character, Scabbers is a man in disguise and her Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher transforms into a werewolf (though that was one secret she had already figured out), she has to tell Harry. 

The two of them use the Time-Turner to try and save Sirius’s soul. And with werewolves, Dementors and the laws of time to grapple with, they have an awful lot on their plate. But once again, the bright and plucky witch pulls through – saving the day.

## Book 4: Hermione Granger and the time she impressed a professional Quidditch player
Hermione’s fourth year doesn’t seem to be any quieter than the previous three. With an exciting Quidditch World Cup Final, her best friend competing in the Triwizard Tournament, a new romance on the scene, her other best friend’s jealousy to deal with and the return of Voldemort – there’s always something going on. 

When Harry is selected as the fourth Triwizard champion, it brings a lot of upheaval. She finds herself in the middle between Ron and Harry who aren’t talking. She is the subject of many false and awful articles by the odious Rita Skeeter. She also has to try and help Harry figure out how he’s going to complete the tasks, which involves a lot of research. 

Those trips to the library do unlock a new relationship, as she gets to know Viktor Krum – the dashing Bulgarian Seeker and Triwizard champion. Krum invites Hermione to the Yule Ball, and she has a wonderful time right up until Ron ruins it for her. 

With romance, jealousy, dancing, death and studying – this year is one Hermione will never forget.

## Book 5: Hermione Granger and the year she created Dumbledore’s Army
Hermione Granger is a Prefect! And while this year may be overshadowed by the return of Voldemort, there are plenty of other things Hermione needs to focus on. Not only does she have the responsibility that comes with being a Prefect, but she has to sit her O.W.L. exams.

With her future on the line, this is not the year for Hermione to get a new and dreadful Defence Against the Dark Arts professor. Unluckily for her, the saccharine and sinister Umbridge is installed at Hogwarts – and is hellbent on changing things for the worse.

A proactive person, Hermione decides that now is the time to take her education into her own hands and comes up with the idea for Dumbledore’s Army. Having persuaded Harry to teach a group of students, this ragtag bunch become quite a force to be reckoned with. 

And when Harry sends them all on a wild goose chase to the Department of Mysteries, she more than proves her worth. Even though she is severely injured, Sirius dies and it turns out to be one of Voldemort’s tricks, Hermione demonstrates that yet again she is someone you need on your team.

## Book 6: Hermione Granger and the year she wished people had listened to her
Hermione starts her sixth year at Hogwarts feeling (unnecessarily) disappointed with her O.W.L. results – Ten Outstandings and One Exceeds Expectations if you must know. Though she has little time to stay disappointed when there are plenty of other things she needs to focus on. 

With Harry suddenly excelling at Potions and outperforming her (unfairly), she needs to knuckle down. Although, when she finds out that he has been getting help in the form of notes written in an old copy of *Advanced Potion-Making*, by someone called the Half-Blood Prince, she is rightly sceptical. But despite her pleas – Harry just won’t listen to her. 

While the mystery of the Half-Blood Prince is a pressing concern, Hermione also has to deal with another important rite of passage – teenage heartbreak. The infuriating boy with the dirt on his nose has found his way into her heart, only to crush it as he takes up with Lavender Brown. Yet, an accidental poisoning helps to improve that situation remarkably.

And on top of everything else there is the revelation about the Horcruxes, the Death of Dumbledore by Snape’s hand (who turns out to be the Half-Blood Prince), Slug Club parties to attend and magic to be learnt. Hermione is in for one busy, frustrating and important year.

## Book 7: Hermione Granger and the time she was the only one who had properly prepared for the Horcrux hunt
The hunt for the Horcruxes is well and truly on! Hermione may not be heading back to Hogwarts this year, but she is as prepared as she possibly can be for the mammoth task ahead. In fact, she is far more prepared than her companions Harry or Ron. With her trusty beaded bag full of all sorts of useful things, she is ready to find and destroy all those bits of Voldemort’s soul.

It won’t be plain sailing. As a Muggle-born she is very much at risk in Voldemort’s new regime. Not to mention the fact that she’s aiding and abetting Undesirable No. 1. There’s also all the danger that she will need to face. Whether it is breaking into the Ministry of Magic, being tortured by Bellatrix Lestrange, or having her heart torn in two for a second time, when Ron decides to leave them.

And even with Ron’s return, she still must face the final Battle of Hogwarts. Though this is a moment where she finally manages to share a kiss with her favourite redhead and has a turn at destroying a Horcrux.

While the battle is incredibly tough, she manages to fight with the best of them – even when it looks like Harry is dead. Luckily, he isn’t, and Hermione can finally have her happy ending. She and Ron are together, with a family of their own, and she’s still the cleverest witch of her age.

By name, Harry Potter might be the de facto hero of the novels, but Hermione was just as much a hero in her own right. Clearly Harry (and Ron, and probably Neville, too) [would have died](/features/why-harry-and-ron-would-never-have-got-so-far-without-hermione) early into *Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone* had Hermione Granger, Muggle-born daughter of dentists, not been in the picture. But it wasn’t just her actions that gave Hermione her great importance.

Hermione solidified herself as the nerd of the group from the very start. She was mildly disliked and a little irritating. She was a [know-it-all](/features/remember-how-annoying-harry-and-ron-used-to-find-hermione), yes, but what’s wrong with that? This know-it-all attitude was well-deserved. She had an intellect that surpassed everybody else’s; it was often mentioned and well-documented throughout the series. [She made us bookworms at home feel like we had a connection with her.](/features/how-harry-potter-and-fantastic-beasts-teach-us-that-its-cool-to-be-smart) How daft Ron must have felt taking the mick out of her in their first Hogwarts year.

In the beginning of *Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone* Hermione didn’t make the best impression. She gave the boys what-for on the train and continued to not make herself particularly popular – she ended up crying in the girls’ bathroom, after all, because of something Ron had said. By the end of the book, however, she came to realise what was most important (more important, in fact, than potentially being expelled): her friends and her new home. You get the feeling that only then did she find her true place in the world; that she was lonely before she became friends with Harry and Ron, and this representation was so important throughout the novels. 

In *Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets*, Hermione proved her worth by solving the quandary of what was haunting Harry in the pipes. She managed to figure it out from only a handful of clues and thus saved her own life – and the lives of many others in the process. While she remained absent from most of the book after being Petrified by the Basilisk, her influence was still very much felt throughout, with Harry and Ron using her knowledge to save the day. They come to realise Hermione’s worth to them both as a problem-solver, but more prominently as their friend.

We all wish we could have been Hermione in her third year, able to afford ourselves more time. The Time-Turner gave Hermione and Harry the tools they needed in order to save both Sirius Black and Buckbeak from certain death. Not only did her smarts allow for their survival, but she also figured out that Lupin was a werewolf long before everybody else, and used this knowledge to save herself and Harry when they realised he was about to head into the woods.

We also saw Hermione slap Draco Malfoy in ‘The Quidditch Final’, later replicated as a punch to the nose in the 2004 film adaptation. And if you say you weren’t cheering her on at least a little, you’re a fibber. Her heroism knows no bounds.

Fourth year was a time of great importance for Hermione Granger. Her appearance at the Yule Ball in particular, in her periwinkle-blue dress (pink in the films) changed the perceptions that many had about her, both in the books and out of them. Becoming Viktor Krum’s date was something of a curveball, as Harry and Ron didn’t even think to ask Hermione to the ball. That aside, Hermione spent most of her year fighting for S.P.E.W., and while very few people believed in her and her mission, it stood to reason that because of this it made for a good argument to get the house-elves on their side during the Battle of Hogwarts. She might have sometimes been a nagging, stuffy know-it-all, but without her so many elements wouldn’t have fallen into place.

You can find a giant example of this during *Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.* It was Hermione who founded Dumbledore’s Army, convincing Harry to train their peers to defend themselves when their schooling was inadequate. Hermione’s planning and foresight was what brought their friends the skills they required in their time of greatest need. Their practises – the badges for communication, using the Room of Requirement – became even more important as time moved forwards, and all of this was because Hermione started it. She might not have been the best fighter, but she was undoubtedly the head of the operation. 

She also chose to make one of the biggest sacrifices in the books: wiping her parents’ memories of her and sending them away so they were safe. The one thing Harry always wanted – a family – she selflessly gave up to help him save the world. It was to keep her mum and dad safe, yes, but she wouldn’t have known then if she would ever see them again. She might have been the greatest witch of her age, but, at heart, she was always the Muggle-born one – which means we can identify with her. Harry was the chosen one, special from the start, whereas Hermione was a hero of her own making.

And this is what truly made Hermione Granger the most important character of the series: her relatability to so many readers. We identify with her. We might have even had the big bushy hair, or enjoyed hiding away in the library during our own school days. Hermione made learning cool, and seeing as school kids can sometimes have you believe otherwise, we were glad of Hermione for that. We didn’t know how to find ourselves, until Hermione showed us. We might not have been aware of it, but we learnt lessons from Hermione as we grew up. Lessons that said that it’s important to be outspoken and stubborn – it can win you even the most difficult situation. Her work ethic, her sheer willingness to do what she believed was right, is inspiring. In short, Hermione Granger was the real hero of the outfit.

## Let’s talk about Harry…
Before he went to Hogwarts, it appeared as though Harry didn’t really have friends. So, we imagine that he was incredibly happy when he went to the magical school and finally found his people. While he didn’t have much experience when it came to friendship, there were still plenty of ways in which he was excellent at it. 

We have to start off by mentioning his generosity. Harry had grown up with nothing and suddenly he had a fortune left to him by his parents. He could easily have kept it all to himself and spent it on anything he wanted… but he didn’t. Instead, he was only too happy to share it with those closest to him. There was the time he first met Ron and bought them both a feast of goodies on the [Hogwarts Express](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hogwarts-express). Then there was when he bought both Ron and Hermione a pair of [Omnioculars](/fact-file/objects/omnioculars) so they could have a better view of the Quidditch World Cup. Harry didn’t think twice about sharing what was his with those he cared about – it was just in his nature. And it didn’t have to be money. In fact, we think Harry would still have been the same even if he didn’t have a single Galleon to his name. 

Harry was someone who encouraged his friends. He believed in them and wanted to make sure that they did too. He reminded Hermione on more than one occasion of just how intelligent she was. He also went to great lengths to make sure that Ron knew that he had it in him to be a great Quidditch player – though on one occasion it involved some sleight of hand and a certain potion appearing to be poured into Ron’s cup.

We also can’t talk about Harry as a friend without mentioning how he would go to great lengths to defend those around him. In the second task of the Triwizard Tournament, he was desperate to save both Ron and Hermione from the clutches of the [merpeople](/fact-file/creatures/merperson) despite Hermione not being his to save. His determination to protect them both meant that he waited until he knew that Krum was there to help Hermione and paid little thought to how it would affect his chances of winning the task. That dedication to protecting people went further than this. Harry was willing to give up his life to save the wizarding world and those he loved including his closest friends. Hermione and Ron were never far from Harry’s mind whenever he had to do something dangerous and his loyalty to them often spurred him on – which only reinforces what a fantastic friend he was.

That’s not to say Harry didn’t have his flaws as a friend. One of those was how he would often side with Ron against Hermione – including when Ron was in the wrong. This tied into the fact that he always seemed to forgive Ron more quickly than Hermione. When Ron returned after leaving Harry and Hermione on the Horcrux hunt, Harry forgave him pretty much immediately. Whereas, when Hermione turned his Firebolt over to Professor McGonagall in his third year, he stopped speaking to her for weeks. Does that seem fair to you?

Harry also had a habit of losing his temper at Ron and Hermione when they didn’t really deserve it. Like when he screamed at them after arriving at [Grimmauld Place](/fact-file/locations/number-twelve-grimmauld-place) for the first time. It just felt unnecessary. Yes, they had been there together for a while before he had arrived. And yes, they hadn’t been able to tell him much in their letters, but it was hardly their fault. Dumbledore had been the one that had insisted on the secrecy. Harry’s anger was misplaced, and he shouldn’t have lashed out at his two best friends… he didn’t even apologise.

However, we have to remember that nobody is perfect and that includes the Chosen One. Harry was a teenager with more on his plate that most adults, so we understand that he was probably often overwhelmed by the huge burden he had to carry and it doesn’t take away from the fact that he was encouraging, generous and dedicated to his closest friends.

## Was Ron the superior friend?
Ron Weasley was Harry’s first school friend. The pair of them immediately bonded and they were pretty much inseparable from day one. There were plenty of things that made Ron Weasley a good friend and some may argue that he was the very best. 

There were lots of times when Ron stood up for his friends. The incident that immediately springs to mind is when Malfoy called Hermione a Mudblood. Despite having a broken wand, Ron tried to cast a spell on Malfoy which backfired spectacularly and ended with Ron being the one to belch slugs (well the thought was there). He also stood up for Hermione against Professor Snape. When Snape called Hermione and ‘insufferable know-it-all’, Ron spoke back to him and ended up with a detention for his troubles. He also refused to stop talking to Harry in *Order of the Phoenix*, despite a plea from his brother Percy.

Ron was also willing to follow Harry on his many adventures without questioning him. He would accept what Harry told him and would go along with it. In *Chamber of Secrets*, he followed the spiders into the [Forbidden Forest](/fact-file/locations/the-forbidden-forest) (despite them being his greatest fear) because Harry asked him to. He would rarely hesitate and would back Harry up whenever he required it. Like Harry, he was also known to put his friends before himself. For instance, there was the time he sacrificed himself on the giant chessboard in *Philosopher’s Stone* so Harry and Hermione could move on through the other obstacles and stop Voldemort – that’s some top-level friending there.

We also can’t forget that he accepted Harry into his family. As soon as Harry became friends with Ron, he also became an honorary [Weasley](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/the-weasleys) and spent some of his happiest summers amongst his favourite redheads. This again was Ron being an excellent friend – Harry needed a family and Ron was more than willing to provide him with one.

Yet, Ron had his fair share of issues. He allowed his jealousy of Harry to cause problems between them. When Harry was selected for the [Triwizard Tournament](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/triwizard-tournament), Ron’s feelings of envy meant that he refused to speak to him until after the First Task. Harry could have done with his friend then, when it felt like most of the school were against him, but Ron had abandoned him. Ron’s jealousy was also a factor when he decided to abandon Harry a second time. In this instance, he left both Harry and Hermione on their own on the dangerous hunt for Horcruxes. Though Ron returned (and deserves credit for swallowing his pride and doing that), the fact he left the pair of them in the first place was terrible and not what a good friend should do.

Ron also had a mean streak. There were numerous occasions when he made Hermione cry. He might have stood up for her against people like Malfoy – but he too was guilty of calling her a know-it-all. Luna Lovegood even commented on his habit of saying unkind things. This unpleasant streak of his also reared its head during the Yule Ball when Ron ruined Hermione’s experience by suggesting that Viktor Krum only invited her to get information about Harry and his strategy for the Triwizard Tournament. Yet again, Ron’s jealousy got in the way of his ability to be a good friend. However, we must say that although Ron had his moments, overall, he was still a caring, funny and faithful friend to both Harry and Hermione.

## Maybe it was Hermione?
When it came to making friends, Hermione struggled at first. A lot of people seemed to think she was a rather obnoxious know-it-all (though we know there is far more to her than that). Yet, she did become firm friends with Harry and Ron and she more than proved her worth. When it came to Harry, Hermione always had his best interests at heart. In *Prisoner of Azkaban*, she was willing to sacrifice their friendship if it meant keeping him safe. After telling Professor McGonagall that Harry had mysteriously received a Firebolt, it was taken away from him for inspection. Although Hermione was just trying to protect Harry, he and Ron saw it as interfering and stopped speaking to her completely – which was a rubbish thing for her best friends to do. We know it hurt her that they wouldn’t talk to her, but it demonstrated how she was willing to forgo her own happiness if it meant her friends were safe.

Building on this, Hermione was always loyal to Harry. She never left him or stopped talking to him. She was always there to support him – from helping him prepare for the Triwizard Tournament to staying with him during the hunt for Horcruxes in *Deathly Hallows*. Even when she was being tortured by Bellatrix Lestrange, she never cracked and gave away any secrets as she was committed to her friends and their mission. Speaking of the Horcrux mission, she wiped her parents’ memories and made them forget about her to make sure they were safe from Voldemort and the Death Eaters while she embarked on this perilous journey. She didn’t have to do any of that and she could have left Harry to hunt the Horcruxes alone. Yet, she didn’t. She shouldered the enormous personal cost to be there for her friend when he needed her most. Let’s be honest… Harry would never have survived without her.

One other thing, despite it going against her nature, Hermione would break school rules to help Harry – like the time she successfully brewed [Polyjuice Potion](/fact-file/plants-and-potions/polyjuice-potion) in her second year or the time she set up Dumbledore’s Army in her fifth. She also attacked Snape in their third year to try and protect Harry and Ron. For rule-loving Hermione that can’t have been easy.

All that being said, Hermione was not perfect. While she and Ron eventually ended up married, their friendship had their fair share of rocky patches. None more so than when Ron ended up dating [Lavender Brown](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lavender-brown). That led to Hermione setting a flock of birds ‘speeding like a hail of fat golden bullets’ to attack Ron, which was not an ok thing to do no matter how upset she was. That falling out also ended up with Harry being stuck in the middle between the pair of them which must have been uncomfortable.

We also reckon if you were to ask Harry and Ron, they would say that she was sometimes overbearing when it came to homework, revision or school rules. They might also say they found it a tad annoying when she would question the plans and schemes that they (usually Harry) had concocted. We can see why it would be frustrating to have someone constantly play devil’s advocate especially on the occasions when you know you are right.

Yet, we don’t think this is necessarily an example of being a poor friend. Yes, Hermione might have annoyed them, but she was always wanting them to do their best, stay safe and not dive headlong into dangerous situations that could go wrong – like the time Harry refused to listen to her telling him not to go to the [Ministry of Magic](/fact-file/locations/the-ministry-of-magic) to save Sirius. Really, Hermione was a very good friend indeed.

Harry, Ron and Hermione all complement each other perfectly. While the trio may fit together like puzzle pieces, that is not say they don’t have their own distinct personalities. ## If you just like to have a laugh and worry about the bigger life moments later … then you’d be best friends with Ron

Are you somebody that is able to find light and laughter in any situation? Are you able to focus on the here and now rather than worrying about what may or may not happen in the future? Then Ron Weasley is the friend for you. 

Ron is a character that often brings welcome relief. His colourful language (Merlin’s most baggy Y-fronts anyone?) and witty one-liners could make anyone smile. Even after the Battle of Hogwarts, in which he lost Fred, he still managed to find a light moment. Who can forget his droll response to Peeve’s little ditty?

Though he would have been feeling awful and grieving, Ron still found a tiny moment of humour to help slightly lift the mood. If you’re someone who also knows how to walk that fine line, then we imagine you two would get on like a house on fire.

Hermione Granger is certainly intelligent, but she doesn’t take it for granted and never rests on her laurels. She always worked hard to be the very best that she could be. Her drive was unapparelled – who else could have pretty much memorised all of their textbooks before they even started at Hogwarts? 

She also encouraged those around her to do their best too (even if a certain couple of wizards often complained about it). From drawing up revision timetables, to checking Harry and Ron’s homework, there is no doubt that she helped them to become better wizards. With her ability and determination, it’s really no surprise that she eventually ended up as Minister for Magic.

So, if you’re someone who doesn’t settle for mediocrity and is always striving to learn and do more, then Hermione would be your best friend. We reckon we would find the pair of you holed up in the library, discussing ideas and challenging each other to always be at the top of your game.

Harry Potter is someone who has faced more than his fair share of obstacles and tragedy. The death of his parents, being brought up by the Dursleys, bearing the weight of being the chosen one and fighting Voldemort are just some of the things he has had to handle. All of that is enough to make anyone want to run away and hide. But not Harry. Every time he has been knocked down, he has got back up and fought even harder – and helped to make the wizarding world a better place. 

If you are someone who is determined to keep moving forward when things are tough, then we think Harry would be a fantastic friend for you. It takes a lot of strength to face hard situations or the unknown, but we can just imagine the two of you supporting and encouraging each other to be able to face anything that is thrown at you – and we’re sure you’d do it brilliantly.
