## When they rescued Harry from the Dursley’s

Cast your mind back to early on in *Chamber of Secrets*. Harry was in trouble. Yes, we know Harry was always in some sort of trouble, but this particular incident could have ended up much worse. Harry had been locked in his bedroom by a furious Uncle Vernon, after that unexpected visit to Privet Drive from [Dobby](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/10-best-dobby-moments) resulted in a kitchen covered with cream and sugared violets, the loss of a huge order of drills for Uncle Vernon, and the Dursley’s discovering Harry was not supposed to do magic outside school and could not, therefore, do anything about being locked in his bedroom.

But Uncle Vernon had not bargained on Ron and his irrepressible brothers Fred and George, who arrived by enchanted (and possibly illegal) car to break him out using a variety of Muggle tricks their mother would surely not have approved of. Undoubtedly Fred and George enjoyed the adventure of it all – flying through the air on a daring rescue mission, like superheroes with a talent for picking locks – but without Ron’s concern and his brothers’ willingness to take a risk, Harry might have spent weeks in that bedroom, eating food delivered through a cat-flap. Even Ron’s parents were worried about Harry. So, thank goodness for Fred, George, and the possibly illegal flying car. 

## When they gave Harry the Marauder’s Map

A year later, in *Prisoner of Azkaban*, Harry once again found himself confined against his will. Admittedly there were no meals being delivered via cat-flap, but his lack of a signed Hogmseade form still meant he was forced to stay behind at Hogwarts while his friends were off buying Jelly Slugs in Honeydukes and drinking Butterbeer in the Three Broomsticks. Which was a pretty miserable state of affairs, even if a certain former Azkaban prisoner called Sirius Black was also at large at the time.

But as Harry moped about the castle, who should come to his aid – again – but those superheroes of misrule, Fred and George? This time, their rescue vehicle was not a possibly illegal flying car but a definitely confiscated piece of old parchment, which, of course, turned out to be the [Marauder’s Map](https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/the-marauders-map). Beautifully detailed and full of magic, it was the secret of the Weasley twins’ success. 

The fact that they gave the Marauder’s Map to Harry – which, as Fred said, was a wrench – was as much about their esteem for him as it was about causing yet more mayhem. Perhaps they understood on some unknown level that the map should be Harry’s anyway, given his father was one of its creators. Or perhaps they sensed, even then, how useful it would prove in years to come. Whatever their underlying motivation, that map revealed a lot more than secret passageways. It also proved that Peter Pettigrew was alive, which changed everything.

## When they gleefully revolted against Umbridge

Fred and George began their final year at Hogwarts without a great deal of enthusiasm. Their Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes plans were ticking along nicely thanks to Harry’s Triwizard donation, and their Skiving Snackboxes range was already in development. As George said, did they really need NEWTs? If it wasn’t for the fact that they didn’t want to upset their mother, perhaps they’d never have set foot in Umbridge-era Hogwarts. We’re very glad they did, though, because they spent most of that year providing welcome relief and backing Harry up during a whole range of unpleasantness. From being early and active supporters of the DA to providing a distraction when Harry needed to speak to Sirius, they were always willing to wade in and help whenever they were asked (and often when they weren’t.)

But their most spectacular moment has to be their final hour at Hogwarts. In the book, this happened after they’d turned an entire school corridor into a swamp, while in the film it came after a well-timed and particularly extravagant display of Weasley’s Wildfire Whiz-bang fireworks literally chased Umbridge out of the exam room. Whichever way you look at it, it was a glorious exit. Fred and George showed Umbridge that she couldn’t bully everyone into submission, and they did it in their signature, spectacular style.

## When they refused to give up on their ambition

Fred and George were creative thinkers with genuine talents, but they always knew those talents were not suited to academic achievement. Their mother may have repeatedly lamented their behaviour and their refusal to take school seriously, but Fred and George were pretty consistent – they had an ambition to run a joke shop, and that ambition was certainly no joke for them. And if you look at the way they focused so completely on developing their range of Skiving Snackboxes, it was actually pretty inspirational. 

After all, not everyone is Prefect material, and Fred and George proved there was more than one way to achieve success. Perhaps it was because they had each other, but the repeated comparisons with their older brothers never seemed to bother Fred and George in the way it bothered Ron. They knew who they were, they knew what they were good at, and they embraced it in a very active way. Look, even Hermione was impressed with their skills. They were jokers, yes, but there’s no denying they had some serious talent.

If there was ever a time the wizarding world was in need of light relief, it’s in the dark days of Voldemort’s rise. Lucky, then, that Fred and George Weasley always have a trademark quip in the back pocket, along with a Puking Pastille, probably.

He and Fred are extremely unconcerned about anything that necessitates acting responsibly, providing [Ron](/features/ron-weasley "Ron Weasley") with a standard to live down to – which is a good alternative, considering the outstanding example of his other older brothers.

When Percy’s desire to climb the ranks sees him working for [Mr Crouch](/features/barty-crouch-sr "Barty Crouch Sr."), he becomes even more insufferable – but Fred and George are there to keep him right. Their attempts to embarrass Percy make him just about bearable. It’s when he leaves school that Percy really starts to pull away from his family.

When Harry greets Ron and [Hermione](/features/hermione-granger "Hermione Granger") at [Grimmauld Place](/features/number-twelve-grimmauld-place "Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place") by letting out weeks of pent-up frustration, it’s a little bit awkward. The Weasley twins’ sudden appearance and cheerful acknowledgement of his anger quickly diffuses the moment, and it feels effortless.

Passing their Apparition test – with distinction, apparently – means Fred and George can magically travel wherever they want. So they do it all the time. They know it’s annoying. They admit it’s annoying. And still they do it.

As the youngest Weasley and the only girl, [Ginny](/features/ginny-weasley "Ginny Weasley") was the last to attend [Hogwarts](/features/hogwarts "Hogwarts") but Fred and George know it would be a mistake to underestimate her. They’re happy to admit it, too, with their usual gentle mockery.

It might hurt a little bit, when your own mother is so excited about having another prefect in the family she momentarily forgets your existence, but neither Fred or George are ones to wallow in self-pity. Pithy sarcasm is more their bag.

… so we can’t say we were that surprised when Fred and George decide to leave Hogwarts. They never seemed as bothered as Ron about living up to their older brothers and are only half-concerned about pleasing their mother. When the things they valued are threatened by [Umbridge](/features/dolores-umbridge "Dolores Umbridge"), it isn’t too much of a shock when they take decisive action.

The manner in which they leave is glorious, though. When Fred and George make their minds up to do something, they don’t do it by halves – and they also know how to play the fool to their friends’ advantage, distracting Umbridge and allowing Harry the chance to speak to [Sirius](/features/sirius-black "Sirius Black"). And Fred’s last line to [Peeves](/features/peeves "Peeves") – well.

As two of the seven Potters, Fred and George do their best to alleviate the task of transferring Harry with their usual stream of jokes. Even when George loses his ear, it doesn’t stop him. Making jokes in dire circumstances shows how brave George is: giving his family permission to laugh, and showing that the injury hasn’t changed him.

For all their teasing, family is important to the Weasley twins, and Percy’s behaviour raises uncharacteristic flashes of anger in both of them. But they’re also quick to forgive. A quip in a battle might seem blasé, but laughter is a way to find light in the darkness, and so Fred and George – laughing to the last – share their inexhaustible supply of humour effortlessly, whenever and wherever it is needed.

While Fred and George Weasley may have looked so similar that even their parents couldn’t tell them apart sometimes, and were so close that you rarely saw one without the other, they were still individuals. Let’s celebrate the differences between our favourite twins.

## 1. Fred was mentioned more in the Harry Potter books

[Fred Weasley is mentioned over 900 times in the books](/features/fred-and-george-weasley-infographic), almost 200 more than his brother (George gets around 731 mentions). This could be down to the fact that Fred was the slightly more outgoing of the two brothers and, in a sense, *did* more, while George waited for Fred to make the first move. It’s Fred and George, not George and Fred, after all. In interviews J.K. Rowling has said, regarding how she decided to kill Fred rather than George: ‘I always knew it was going to be Fred, and I couldn't honestly tell you why.’ But she did think people would have expected George to be the one who died, and that killing off the slightly more vocal character was a surprise.

## 2. George was the better Quidditch player

While both Fred and George were excellent Beaters, and a credit to the Gryffindor Quidditch team, there were more mentions of George hitting Bludgers than there were of Fred. George seemed to be the slightly more aggressive of the two on the [Quidditch pitch](https://www.wizardingworld.com/collections/quidditch), described once as hitting a Bludger at a player as a way of ‘vent[ing] his feelings’, and retaliating for a foul by elbowing a Slytherin Beater in the face. He even had good aim with snowballs. Aggression may, of course, be a very desirable trait in a Beater, so it could be this that gave George the edge over his brother. It was probably a healthy outlet for George, too, as off the pitch he was usually the more compassionate of the two.

## 3. Fred was usually the instigator

Whenever the Weasley twins did something particularly naughty it always seemed to be Fred who took the lead. When the twins and Ron broke Harry out of [Privet Drive](https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/number-four-privet-drive) in his second year, it was Fred who was driving the flying Ford Anglia. He was usually the one behind even the smaller pranks; Fred was the one who liberated a salamander from Care of Magical Creatures so they could try to feed it a Filibuster Firework, and Fred was the one who ‘accidentally’ dropped a Ton-Tongue Toffee in front of Dudley. It was Fred who had the (unsuccessful) idea to use Ageing Potion to put their names in the Goblet of Fire, and was the first to cross the age line to try it. Fred was also the twin who talked back to [Umbridge](/writing-by-jk-rowling/dolores-umbridge "Dolores Umbridge by J.K. Rowling"), and initiated their final flight from Hogwarts.

## 4. George smoothed things over

Perhaps Fred was the bolder twin because he knew his brother was there to mitigate the damage. Fred and George were both undeniably charismatic, but George was, as it were, the public face of the Weasley twins, able to be much more subtle and diplomatic than Fred. George was the twin who made edits to their letter to Ludo Bagman, knowing that certain wording would sound accusatory, and was the one who realised why Hermione wanted to get into the school kitchens. He was even the one who remembered to get the new Common Room password from a prefect.

## 5. George was more sympathetic, but Fred was generally funnier

Fred cracked more jokes and one-liners than George did, and was often the first to imitate and mock his siblings (greeting Harry with an impression of Percy’s pomposity, and asking Ron if he minded not getting a kiss from him for being made prefect – and then challenging Ron to give him detention). George usually joined in of course, but he took his cue for what kind of jokes they were making from his brother. On the other hand, George was more compassionate when the time called for it. When Fred was teasing Ron over Scabbers’ presumed death, saying it was probably better for him to ‘snuff it quickly’, George at least tried to cheer Ron up, and reminded him he was always complaining about the rat anyway.

## 6. Fred spoke first and George explained second

When you read through the books you can see that it was almost always Fred who spoke first, usually a joke or a dramatic comment. He was the front man, the lead singer, the one who first got everyone’s attention. George was the slightly more level-headed twin who explained what his brother actually meant. Fred even passed George the task of explaining the [Marauder’s Map](/writing-by-jk-rowling/the-marauders-map "The Marauder’s Map by J.K. Rowling") to Harry when he could have done so himself. In fact, while Harry was close to both of the twins, he had longer conversations with George, who often explained events Harry might have missed, plans he and Fred had, or things Harry didn’t quite understand. Fred and George really did complement each other perfectly.

## If you like to take the lead… you’re most like Fred
Fred Weasley was the twin that liked to take the lead. If there was a joke, scheme or anything particularly outrageous happening, you’d most likely find that he was the instigator. After all, it was Fred who Mr Weasley caught clutching Ron’s hand in an attempt to make an Unbreakable Vow. He was the one to ‘accidentally’ drop the Ton-Tongue Toffee in front of Dudley. He was the one behind the wheel of the flying Ford Anglia when he, George and Ron rescued Harry from Privet Drive. And it was Fred who would take the lead in conversations. Once he had everyone’s attention with a witty joke, statement or occasional impression, then that would normally be the point when George stepped in. So, if you’re known for being a leader and are often the one to be found at the centre of the chaos, then you are most like Fred. You’re certainly not lacking in confidence, and you make every room you walk into a little, well, a lot more fun.

## If you’re more empathetic… you’re just like George
There is no doubt that George Weasley was hilarious and excellent at practical jokes. However, he was also the slightly quieter twin, who tended to demonstrate a little more compassion than his brother. In *Prisoner of Azkaban*, when Oliver Wood was singing the praises of the Gryffindor Quidditch team and glossed over himself, it was George who piped up to remind him that he was very good too. He also tried to comfort Ron after the supposed death of Scabbers – while Fred just stuck to teasing his younger brother. He was also the one to take time to explain things to people. When he and Fred bequeathed Harry the Marauder’s Map, George was the one who explained what it did and tried to reassure Harry that he and Fred no longer needed it. So, if you can be level-headed, diplomatic and can read people well, you’re most like George. We’re not saying you aren’t funny or spontaneous, but you can be tactful and are better at recognising when to take things seriously.

## 6: Trick Wands
In sixth place with have Trick Wands. There is no doubt that it would be rather funny to watch your friends try and cast a spell only for their wand to turn into a rubber chicken, a pair of underpants or box them round the head. Although having said that, we reckon this practical joke would only work the once and it would be difficult to fool your friend for a second time, which is why we haven’t placed it any higher on the list.

## 5: Headless Hats
Next, we have Fred and George’s Headless Hats. We think there are plenty of tricks you could play with these rather ingenious inventions. Just pop one of these on your head, pretend to be a ghostly apparition and watch the horrified chaos unfold in front of you. Although, this is still towards the bottom of our list as we reckon there are many ways that this could backfire. Sometimes scaring people doesn’t always go according to plan – and you may end up having to use these hats to hide from an irate target of your joke…

## 4: Portable Swamps
In fourth place we have the Portable Swamps. The size of the swamp is what makes this one funny. When the Weasley twins made their grand exit during *Order of the Phoenix*, and left this behind as a memento, the commotion they caused was brilliant. The image of Argus Filch (who is crochety at the best of times) punting students back and forth to their lessons with a scowl on his face is just perfect – not to mention the headache it caused Professor Umbridge. However, as these are notoriously difficult to get rid of, we think that the joke could end up wearing a bit thin and you might get fed up of having to wade across the grimy water with permanently wet feet.

## 3: Weasleys’ Wildfire Whiz-bangs
We believe that Weasleys’ Wildfire Whiz-bangs just sneak ahead of Portable Swamps, mainly due to the spectacular show they put on. From sparklers that write swear words to immense fire-breathing dragons, there is something for every budding mischief maker. The pandemonium caused by the Weasley twins when they let them loose in Hogwarts has also pushed them up our list. The thought of slightly-singed and irate Umbridge trying to get control of the colourful chaos, but only managing to make things worse, is just plain funny – it couldn’t have happened to a nicer person. Yet these haven’t quite made the top, as it was the circumstances that made this prank so amusing rather than the product itself. Although, the scope for creating mischief with these should not be underestimated.

## 2: Skiving Snackboxes 
Creeping up towards the top we have the snacks you would be best to avoid. The sheer range of products makes this one impressive – from Ton-Tongue Toffees to Fainting Fancies, to Nosebleed Nougat, there are so many opportunities for a budding troublemaker to cause a scene. Though for us, the funniest one has to be the Canary Cream. ## 1: U-No-Poo
Taking the top spot, we have the constipation sensation that is sweeping the nation. A classic joke, it proves that sometimes simplicity is key. Mrs Weasley may have worried that the excellent name would have led to Fred and George being murdered in their beds, but we personally think it was a bit of comic genius. It does exactly what it says on the tin and makes one of the darkest wizards to have ever existed seem that little bit less scary. We don’t think we really need to say any more than that.

Whether stumbling upon secret passageways out of the castle, or using their natural talent for causing chaos to help undermine Voldemort, there was more to ‘Gred’ and ‘Forge’ than just managing mischief. Their tricks often required intelligence, bravery… and sometimes even, most shockingly of all, common sense. 

## They proved that two heads were better than one

The twins may have only achieved three O.W.L.s each during their Hogwarts exams, but those boys were smarter in ways far deeper than the academic sense. When inventing, trialling and perfecting the various products they sold at Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes, for example, they proved they had more brain power than most.

And when the products started to sell, even their family were surprised. As Ron says in *Goblet of Fire*, ‘It was brilliant, I never knew they’d been inventing all that...’

## We solemnly swear that they were secret hard workers

When the twins revealed the existence of the Marauder’s Map to Harry in *Prisoner of Azkaban*, the reader never questions how the twins actually figured out how to use the map. Fred and George were almost the ‘Marauders’ of a new generation, after all. 

But when you think about, it must have taken Fred and George no small amount of investigating, testing and spell-casting to discover that the phrase ‘I solemnly swear that I am up to no good’ was the key to unlocking the map. Did they stay up ‘til the early hours just saying various rebellious catchphrases until they fell upon the right one? This all just goes to show that Fred and George were able to apply themselves and work hard on the things that really mattered. Like spying on people.

## They had creative solutions for their problems

Some wizards just shout ‘stupefy’ whenever a problem comes their way. (Harry, we’re looking at you.) But if Fred and George were to write a curriculum vitae, there’s no doubt that ‘creative problem-solving skills’ would be listed under personal attributes. The twins had a way of coming up with chaotic, incredible solutions to problems that no one else would even want to tackle.

For example, when faced with a problem such as Professor Umbridge, what could be a more logical response than placing a Portable Swamp in the hallway outside her office? 

> ‘So!’ said Umbridge triumphantly. Harry realised she was standing just a few stairs in front of him, once more looking down upon her prey. ‘So – you think it amusing to turn a school corridor into a swamp, do you?’<br>

## Their plotting was positively Slytherin-esque

We’ve already established that the twins were far smarter than their O.W.L.s suggested, but some of their more nefarious schemes involved a great deal of strategy – and a ‘get out of Azkaban free’ card. 

When Fred and George gave Dudley Dursley his comeuppance in *Goblet of Fire*, they did so in a way that meant Dudley was the architect of his own misery – so that they were not entirely culpable. When the Weasleys picked Harry up from number four, Privet Drive for the Quidditch World Cup, and the twins ‘accidentally’ dropped toffees they were carrying and Dudley was quick to dive in.

> A bag of sweets had spilled out of Fred’s pocket and the contents were now rolling in every direction – big, fat toffees in brightly coloured wrappers.<br>

## They commanded respect from the most unlikely of suspects

Fred and George’s names weren’t exactly synonymous with ‘respectability’ – but that all depended on who they were trying to get respect from. While the teachers of Hogwarts didn’t hold the twins in very high esteem (although we suspect that Professor McGonagall secretly loved them), there was one figure in the castle who certainly listened to what the twins had to say. 

When Fred and George made their dramatic exit from Hogwarts in *Order of the Phoenix* – unable to take any more of Umbridge being in charge – Peeves took their parting words to heart.

## Their pranks had something of a snowball effect…

Fred and George carried out innumerable pranks during their years at Hogwarts – some more memorable than others. But even their smaller tomfooleries had serious potential... Take, for example, the time in *Philosopher’s Stone* when 13-year-old Fred and George bewitched snowballs to follow Professor Quirrell around, bouncing off the back of his turban.
