## The case for Ginny
As far as starts go, nobody had one quite as bad as Ginny Weasley. Being possessed by [Tom Riddle’s diary](/fact-file/objects/tom-riddles-diary) must have been isolating, terrifying and confusing. Not only was Ginny navigating starting a new school and being away from her family for the first time, but she had to do so whilst dealing with being under the influence of a Horcrux. The diary made her do terrible things – such as killing chickens and smearing bloody messages on the walls of Hogwarts and let’s not gloss over the fact she opened the Chamber of Secrets, setting the [Basilisk](/fact-file/creatures/basilisk) loose on the Muggle-borns of Hogwarts. 

Ginny didn’t want to do any of those horrifying things. In fact, she had huge gaps in her memory when the piece of Voldemort’s soul had total control over her. We can’t even begin to imagine how dreadful it must have felt to have so little power over your own thoughts and actions. And when Tom Riddle was done with her, he left her in the Chamber of Secrets to die a slow, lonely and terrible death. He even made her write the message on the wall informing everyone at Hogwarts (and her family) that ‘Her skeleton will lie in the Chamber for ever’. If it wasn’t for Harry rescuing Ginny, her first year would have also been her last.

Ok, so Harry may have had to also deal with Lord Voldemort protruding from the back of Professor Quirrell’s head in his first year, but there is no way that his start at Hogwarts was worse than Ginny’s! Whereas Ginny’s first year was marked by isolation and despair, a lot of Harry’s was filled with joy and new discoveries. He had finally found a place he could be happy, had made some brilliant friends and had somewhere he could gladly call home. Yes, he had a [Defence Against the Dark Arts](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/defence-against-the-dark-arts) teacher out to get him. And yes, facing the wizard who had murdered his parents can’t have been easy. But Harry did not have to do any of that alone. He had Hermione and Ron with him every step of the way – Ginny had no such support system. 

Furthermore, despite breaking about a thousand school rules whilst retrieving the [Philosopher’s Stone](/fact-file/objects/the-philosophers-stone), Harry was praised and rewarded for his daring actions. He was able to bask in the glory of his success and his antics helped earn Gryffindor enough house points to win the House Cup. Ginny didn’t have any upside to her traumatic experience. Instead, (as we learnt in *Cursed Child*) she was shunned by her peers. 

There was also Ginny’s crush on Harry and the incident with the singing Valentine featuring the lyrics ‘His eyes as green as a fresh pickled toad’. It was just embarrassing all round – the less we say about this the better. But just imagine having to deal with a crush on a boy who barely knew you existed, as well as being possessed by part of the soul of one of the Darkest wizards of all time and that same boy you fancy is the one who ended up rescuing you – it’s a lot. 

Overall, Ginny had an extremely miserable first year at Hogwarts. She left the comforting surroundings of [The Burrow](/fact-file/locations/the-burrow) and found herself completely adrift in a school with nobody to turn to. Whilst Harry’s first year was all about discovering a new world that felt like home and was warmer and brighter than anything he had experienced with the Dursleys, Ginny’s was all about discovering the underside of the wizarding world and its murky awful depths.

## The case for Harry 
Okay, fair’s fair, Ginny definitely had her hands full in her first [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) year – nobody is disputing that. Being possessed by Lord Voldemort + trying to get to grips with your first school crush? Definitely bad! But let’s not forget about our resident Boy Who Lived, who had an even more terrifying Hogwarts beginning. 

And the trouble started before he even got to school. While Ginny came from a loving wizarding family, with several brothers and two parents to inform her of the Hogwarts experience, Harry didn’t even know he was a wizard until just over a month before he had to start term, and that his parents had actually not died in a car crash, but had been murdered by someone called [Lord Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort), who had tried to kill him too. It’s a lot! Thanks to the Dursleys’ failed attempts to ‘stamp the magic out of him’, poor Harry only had August to emotionally prepare for this huge, dramatic overhaul. Isn’t it distressing enough starting a new school, let alone with the added caveat that your entire life, up ‘til now, has been a lie? And you thought picking the perfect first-year school shoes was nerve-wracking.

Despite some help (and cake) from the friendly gamekeeper [Rubeus Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid), Harry doesn’t even know how to get to catch his train to school, with the Dursleys callously dumping him at King’s Cross Station without a second thought. What a horrible thing to have to go through all alone! It wasn’t until he bumped into a friendly wizarding family – Ginny’s family! – that Harry found his way.

Then, when Harry actually got to Hogwarts, his lack of magical knowledge continued to be overwhelming. Sure, he was finally rid of the Dursleys, getting to live in an enchanted castle with new friends and professors to guide him, but due to Harry’s unique position as being the child who took down the most dangerous wizard of the time, Harry joins Hogwarts as a celebrity. And while that might sound great on paper, Harry found himself at the centre of a lot of expectation and attention – not all of it good. He quickly gained his fair share of bullies, from the jealous [Draco Malfoy](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/draco-malfoy) to an actual teacher, [Professor Snape](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/severus-snape), openly embarrassing him in his first-ever Potions class. How upsetting for an already-incredibly-nervous young first year to have your self-esteem laid to waste like that! Snape’s behaviour (built on years of hatred of Harry’s father) wouldn’t even make sense to Harry until much later. At this point, Harry is still coming to terms with his personal history and his legacy. 

And such a legacy puts Harry in a series of precarious positions pretty swiftly. Yes, yes, it’s nice to be popular, but a spotlight can quickly darken, as Harry soon learnt. After getting caught wandering around Hogwarts out-of-hours, for example, he loses a huge wedge of house points from Gryffindor (‘Fifty points each’ still rings in our ears) and instantly becomes the most unpopular child in school. Harrowing! (Side note: this all happened because Harry was trying to transport Hagrid’s pet dragon out of Hogwarts safely, as a favour to a friend! Added reminder! He is still only 11 years old!)  

Death of his reputation aside, Harry also experiences approx. four real near-death experiences in his first year alone. Combatting a giant mountain troll, coming face-to-face with a huge three headed dog, surviving a cursed bucking broomstick, and then, to top it all off, meeting Lord Voldemort himself – who – surprise! – isn’t quite as vanquished as perhaps we all thought. Hogwarts life is certainly never normal, but all of the above is beyond abnormal. 

Harry ends his year at Hogwarts in the hospital wing (again – not great!) with his headmaster, [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore), having to explain a lot to him – while still holding back some secrets. Yes, your first year at school (be it magical or Muggle) is tough enough, but Harry had to do it all with a target on his back.

## Her loyalty

Although the Ginny we met in *Philosopher’s Stone* was shy and awkward, particularly with Harry – [a far cry from the Ginny](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/favourite-couple-moments-harry-ginny-ron-hermione-cursed-child) of *Cursed Child*, who had no problem challenging Harry’s behaviour – there was one consistent thread that runs through all Ginny’s rela-tionships: she was fiercely and unendingly loyal. 

Whether it was defending Harry to Malfoy after that whole Lockhart bookshop debacle, sticking up for Neville and Luna, fighting to protect her loved ones during the Battle of Hogwarts, or forcing Harry to engage with their son, Albus, on his terms, Ginny always had everyone’s best interests at heart, and she’d do whatever was needed to protect them.

## Her determination

Despite being desperate to follow in her older brother’s footsteps Ginny did not have the most auspicious start at Hogwarts. But while being slowly possessed by an early version of Lord Voldemort might be enough to knock the stuffing out of other first-years, for Ginny, her experience with Tom Riddle’s diary did not defeat her.

That’s not to say she ever forgot it. When Harry was struggling to understand what had happened after the vision he had of Voldemort attacking Arthur Weasley, it was Ginny who made him realise that refusing to talk wasn’t helping.

Perhaps it had something to do with [surviving a personal encounter with Voldemort at a young age](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/what-if-ginny-had-never-possessed-tom-riddles-diary), but as Ginny got older she only became more resilient. Like Harry, Ginny had a built-in determination to keep fighting. In many ways, her experience with Voldemort gave her an insight and a strength that few others could ever hope to have. With the ex-ception of Harry, of course. 

## Her bravery

Another trait Ginny shared with Harry was bravery. As she says of him in *Cursed Child*:

“After I came out of hospital – everyone ignored me, shut me out – other than, that is, the boy who had everything – who came across the Gryffindor common room and challenged me to a game of Exploding Snap. People think they know all there is to know about you, but the best bits of you are – have always been – heroic in really quiet ways.”

This is something that could equally apply to Ginny. Yes, she showed undeniable brav-ery when she escaped Umbridge’s Inquisitorial Squad; when she, Neville and Luna followed Harry to the Department of Mysteries; when she tried to steal Gryffindor’s sword; and – of course – during the Battle of Hogwarts. But Ginny was also brave in other ways. 

After shedding her initial awkwardness, she pursued romantic relationships without fear or embarassment. She was never afraid to call out the bad behaviour of her brothers, her teachers, even Harry. And she, too, supported others in quietly heroic ways. She insisted on sitting with Luna on the Hogwarts Express, when others were avoiding her. She refused to let Neville call himself a nobody. And as a mother, she recognised that what Albus needed from Harry was acceptance, not heroics.  

## Her talent

Ginny was a witch of many talents: [Quidditch](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/things-you-might-not-know-about-quidditch), sports writing, Bat Bogey Hexes.

But even more admirable than her skills was her confidence in, and open enjoyment, of them. She preferred playing Chaser to Seeker, because she liked scoring goals. She was a committed [member of the DA](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/which-member-of-dumbledores-army-are-you-like). And she was a fierce dueller – singled out by her brother George as evidence of the fact that “size is no guarantee of power.” 

So while we might not share Ginny’s magical talents, we can still try and emulate the pleasure she took in practicing the things she excelled at.

## Her way of looking at the world

Ginny may have originally been overshadowed by other members of her family, she may have taken a few years to find her voice, and she may have once poured her heart out to the preserved memory of Voldemort. But as she grew up, Ginny emerged as one of the Wizarding World’s most fearless characters. Perhaps this is best summed up in *Order of the Phoenix*:

“The thing about growing up with Fred and George,” said Ginny thoughtfully, “is that you start thinking anything’s possible if you’ve got enough nerve.”

And it wasn’t just Fred and George’s nerve that Ginny inherited. Growing up with her older brothers also taught her when to find the humour in a situation – she had that light-hearted Weasley touch that made even difficult situations seem a bit more fun. After all, who else would shut down an annoying classmate with a Bat Bogey Hex, nickname their sister-in-law Pleghm, or openly tell Harry he was being stupidly noble?

So thanks, Ginny, for all the times you supplied that silver lining we were looking for. Oh, and happy birthday.

Bonnie Wright spent ten years fully immersed in the world of Harry Potter and brought an important character to life. As it’s the 20th anniversary of the *Philosopher’s Stone*, we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to ask Bonnie 20 questions about her time as Ginny Weasley. We certainly learnt a lot, from who was the funniest on set to what she loved about her character and even which other Hogwarts house might take her fancy.

## 1.	Firstly, we know you’re a Gryffindor but what would your second choice be?

Slytherin! Why not give the other side a turn?

## 2.	How does it feel knowing that the *Philosopher’s Stone* was released 20 years ago? 

Honestly, I still can’t believe it. I think because it is still loved by so many people it feels like it came out yesterday. 

## 3.	Were you surprised at just how popular *Philosopher’s Stone* (and subsequent movies) became? 

Yes, which I shouldn’t have been really because we all know the books are so brilliant, but I am pleased it unfolded how it did.  There was a sense of the unknown that enabled me to be totally present to the experience.

## 4.	What is your favourite moment from the first film? 

I love the scene when Hagrid takes Harry to Diagon Alley. We get introduced to the wizarding world through Harry’s eyes. Everything is so magical!

## 5.	What is you earliest memory of being a part of the Wizarding World? 

Being actually 9 and ¾ years old on platform 9 ¾! When you’re that young age is important ha! The best part of the entire series for me was being a member of the Weasley family.

## 6.	What was your reaction when you found out you were going to play Ginny Weasley? 

My brother Lewis and I rolled down the windows of the car and screamed. My family and I were all so excited.

## 7.	What Ginny moment made you feel the most proud of her?

Standing up for Harry being bullied by Draco Malfoy in Flourish and Blotts, it was so cute and endearing. 

## 8.	What do fans tell you they most admire about your character?

How fierce, kind and loving she is. She has this amazing power that she balances with softness so well.

## 9.	If you had the chance to play another character, who would it be? 

I could never do it justice, but I always loved Bellatrix Lestrange. 

## 10.	We know that filming a movie can involve a lot of gaps between takes/scenes. How would you entertain yourself during that time on set?

Well, we were kids, so we loved to be kids and be goofy but at the same time we also had school to stay on top of. So as soon as we weren’t on set, we were in the classroom together.

## 11.	Who was the funniest person on set and how did they make you laugh?

Rupert was always the funniest, I laughed the most during our scenes at The Burrow.

## 12.	When meeting the cast for the first time, was there anyone who made you particularly starstruck? 

Well, I was so young, so I was pretty naive when it came to knowing who was famous. Julie Walters who played my mum became a motherly figure to me on set when I was young, explaining what was happening around me and just making me feel protected. I then watched more of her films and was like wow she is incredible – I am nervous now! 

## 13.	When Harry, Ron and Hermione went through the trapdoor to rescue the Philosopher’s Stone in the first film, they faced many obstacles. There was Fluffy the three-headed dog, the Devil’s Snare, the flying keys, the giant wizard chess board and the Mirror of Erised. Which one would you feel most confident taking on and how would you tackle it? 

Fluffy mainly because I have always loved the idea of playing the harp. I better get practicing!

## 14.	And which two characters would you choose to help you rescue the Philosopher’s Stone and why did you pick them? 

Neville and Luna, because we did so well together at the Ministry of Magic in *Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix*. 

## 15.	If you could have one spell, or one type of magic, that you were able to use in your day-to-day life, what would you pick? 

A Portkey, I would love to be able to travel carbon emission free.

## 16.	What is your favourite Harry Potter book and film? And are they different to each other? 

*Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix* is my favourite book because I love all the characters who are Order members. My favourite film is probably *Deathly Hallows Part 2* just because it was the big finale and strongest still in my memory.

## 17.	We know that Ginny had a pet Pygmy Puff, but what would be your wizarding pet? 

I was always sad that there weren’t more dogs around Hogwarts. So, I would bring my dog, Billy Blue.

## 18.	What form would your Boggart take and what would your Animagus form be?

My Boggart would definitely be a rat. I wish my Animagus could be a dolphin, if I was cool enough to have that power. 

## 19.	Which Wizarding World moment made you the most emotional?

The last scene, being back on platform 9 ¾ and this time as a mother married to Harry. It was so surreal. The actors playing our kids were the same age as we were when we began. It was a true full circle moment full of a lot of emotions. 

## 20.	Why do you think the Harry Potter series is still so loved today?

It explores the most important theme, love. Unconditional and unjudgmental love. Good triumphs over evil because of love. I think fans and myself find a home in Hogwarts. No matter what is happening in our own lives, it is always there to welcome us.

Seven times Ginny Weasley gave Fred and George a run for their money

## When we found out how Ginny got quite so good at Quidditch
Fred and George always embraced the theatrical side of their shenanigans and so the mischievous deeds of other family members often slipped under the radar – and this is a perfect example. Ginny may not have made a song and dance about it, but her broomstick-stealing skills were to be applauded…

>‘Come on, Ginny’s not bad,’ said George fairly, sitting down next to Fred. ‘Actually, I dunno how she got so good, seeing how we never let her play with us.’

## When she tried to steal the sword of Gryffindor
Only the most daring troublemakers would attempt to break into the office of the headteacher – it’s certainly not for the faint-hearted. And when the headmaster in question is Severus Snape, the supposed Death Eater, it would be totally normal to get cold feet. We can even imagine Fred and George feeling momentarily daunted at the prospect of stealing the sword. But Ginny Weasley was fierce, rebellious and unafraid of a challenge. Though her, Neville and Luna’s plan was thwarted, it didn’t make it any less impressive.

>‘Didn’t you hear about that, Ted?’ asked Dirk. ‘About the kids who tried to steal Gryffindor’s sword out of Snape’s office at Hogwarts?’

## When she joked about tattoos 
Ginny’s playful nature wasn’t just contained to her troublemaking – she was fantastically quick witted too. When quizzed about Harry’s alleged chest tattoo by Romilda Vane, not only did she improve upon the original rumour, but she also introduced the idea of Ron’s Pygmy Puff ink. We also appreciated the deadpan way in which she informed the trio of this development…

>‘You’d think people had better things to gossip about,’ said Ginny, as she sat on the common-room floor, leaning against Harry’s legs and reading the Daily Prophet. ‘Three Dementor attacks in a week, and all Romilda Vane does is ask me if it’s true you’ve got a Hippogriff tattooed across your chest.’ 

>Ron and Hermione both roared with laughter. Harry ignored them.

>‘What did you tell her?’

>‘I told her it’s a Hungarian Horntail,’ said Ginny, turning a page of the newspaper idly.

## Her determination to find out what was going on with the Order
Out of all the Weasleys, it was Ginny that seemed to share the impish streak which Fred and George were famous for – and the way she went about her eavesdropping was very reminiscent of the twins. Not only did she completely ignore the fact that she was far too young to hear about Order business, but she also chose to throw stinky Dungbombs at the door to see if it was Imperturbed, and that felt very Fred and George.

I’ve been flicking Dungbombs at it from the top of the stairs and they just soar away from it, so there’s no way the Extendable Ears will be able to get under the gap.’

## Followed by her ability to come up with excuses on the spot
Ginny’s ability to come up with a cover story after throwing the Dungbombs was also very Fred and George. When Ginny was put on the spot by her mother (a formidable prospect) she didn’t break or even give a hint that she’d been up to no good. She kept her cool and moved things along smoothly – even if poor Crookshanks did get all the blame.

>‘The meeting’s over, you can come down and have dinner now. Everyone’s dying to see you, Harry. And who’s left all those Dungbombs outside the kitchen door?’

>‘Crookshanks,’ said Ginny unblushingly. ‘He loves playing with them.’

## Any time she unleashed her Bat Bogey Hex
Ginny’s Bat Bogey Hex was the stuff of legend. She managed to escape the Inquisitorial Squad by using it. She was invited to be a member of The Slug Club because of it. Even her troublemaking twin brothers recognised the power of it. And while many magical people have a signature spell, Harry and Expelliarmus for example, the fact that Ginny’s is something which is completely gross and ridiculous really reveals her roguish sense of humour.

## When Fred and George couldn’t help but be impressed by her abilities…
If there’s one thing that shows Ginny was the Weasley who could give Fred and George a run for their money, it’s the fact that the twins recognised her abilities themselves. They knew that while Ginny was small, she was also mighty, and it would be foolish to underestimate her. If the kings of mischief recognised her skills, then she must have been an excellent troublemaker.

Before we dive into what could have happened, let’s look at why the diary was so significant in the first place…

When we initially come across Tom Riddle’s diary in *Chamber of Secrets*, we are unaware of just how powerful an object it truly is. At first the diary bought from a Muggle stationary shop seems harmless. The pages are blank after all… but we soon learn there is more to this journal than meets the eye.

Soon we are taken into the diary and shown the memories of Tom Riddle. The diary wants us to believe it was Hagrid who had opened the Chamber of Secrets and Tom who had stopped him. Of course, at this point we were still unaware that Tom was Voldemort. However, when Ginny is taken to the Chamber and Harry goes to rescue her, we soon realise that this is a rather insidious artefact, and that this sentiment applies to its original owner too. 

It was Tom Riddle who had found the Chamber of Secrets during his time at Hogwarts, and it was he who opened it – which led to the death of a student. Having been worried that Hogwarts would be closed because of this murder, Tom pinned the blame on someone else and abandoned his current plan to finish Salazar Slytherin’s work. Instead, he left an enchanted diary which would complete the mission in the future by possessing and manipulating an innocent soul, such as Ginny, to do his dirty work.

If it wasn’t for Harry’s timely intervention, Ginny would have died, and Hogwarts would have closed. When Harry destroyed the diary, he wasn’t just getting rid of an awful object but was also destroying a part of Voldemort’s soul – as the diary turned out to be a Horcrux. 

Yet none of this may have happened if Lucius Malfoy hadn’t slipped the diary into Ginny’s book in the first place. While the Chamber of Secrets remaining sealed would have been a good thing… we can’t help but wonder what impact it would have had on the rest of the story. Would it have changed Ginny? Would it have had an impact on her relationship with Harry? Most importantly, what would it mean for the destruction of Voldemort?

## Would the Chamber of Secrets have reopened? 
When Tom Riddle created the Horcrux out of his diary, he probably didn’t have an exact idea of when it would be used to open the Chamber of Secrets again. In fact, it wasn’t his decision to open it at all. That was all down to Lucius Malfoy and his vindictive desire to get one over on Arthur Weasley. We think it is pretty safe to say that there is a fair chance that the Chamber would have remained closed in Harry’s second year at Hogwarts. We also reckon that could have extended to Harry’s entire time at school. We highly doubt that there was any pupil at Hogwarts who would have had the capability to open the Chamber, even if they did have strong anti Muggle-born views (like Draco Malfoy for instance). So, without the diary we reckon it might have stayed shut.

We also think that the Chamber may not have been opened if the diary had come into the possession of someone who wasn’t as vulnerable as Ginny. For Tom Riddle's plan to work, he required an innocent soul who needed a friend. They had to pour themselves into the diary and be completely open. If they were guarded, he might not have been able to possess them and force them to carry out his plan. He also needed someone who would be too frightened to own up to what was happening or ask for help. Ultimately, the person who owned the diary could not suspect its true motives. While we don’t deny that there could have been other students who were susceptible, at that moment, Ginny was the perfect target.

Nevertheless, we’re not saying that it could never have been opened at another moment in time. Lucius Malfoy didn’t seem to understand just how valuable the diary actually was to Voldemort or that it contained a piece of his soul. He just thought it was an excellent way to get rid of Muggle-borns. So, even though he was supposed to take care of it, we imagine he wouldn’t have been able to pass up on an opportunity to try and have the Chamber of Secrets opened again. He might not have chosen Ginny, but he still would have given it a go in the years before Voldemort returned to power.

## Would the sword of Gryffindor have been so important?
The sword of Gryffindor was integral to the plot of the *Chamber of Secrets* – it was what killed the Basilisk. And as the sword is Goblin-made, it was built to imbibe only that which makes it stronger. Therefore, when the sword was used to kill the King of Serpents, it became impregnated with its venom. Now this made the sword an invaluable object as Basilisk venom is one of the very few substances that can obliterate a Horcrux. Without it, the sword would not have been powerful enough to destroy one. If Ginny hadn’t opened the Chamber of Secrets, Harry would probably have been oblivious to the sword, and it would not have been as important. 

It was not just the hunt for Horcruxes that made this sword so special, it was also because of what it symbolised. If Harry hadn’t known about it, he may never have had the reassurance that he belonged in Gryffindor. It was the discussion he had with Dumbledore, after he returned from the Chamber (with the sword), that led him to realise that it is our choices rather than our abilities that make us who we are. Without it, his worries about his Slytherin traits would probably have become worse and made life even more difficult for him.

Ultimately, we reckon that the sword of Gryffindor would not have been an important element in the stories if Ginny didn’t have the diary. Harry would probably not have encountered it. Even if he had come across it, it would not have been a crucial tool in the Horcrux hunt but a rather beautiful, if decorative, object.

## Would the trio have had more trouble hunting Horcruxes and defeating Voldemort? 
We’ve briefly touched upon the importance of the sword of Gryffindor as a means to destroy Horcruxes and with that in mind, the short answer would be yes. 

If Ginny didn’t have the diary, the subsequent events would not have occurred, and this would have left our trio with no means of getting rid of the Horcruxes. While we know there are other ways of disposing of one, it requires magic that is very powerful and often unstable. Fiendfyre is one example of this. Though, as we saw with the death of Crabbe, it was incredibly dangerous and almost uncontrollable – even Hermione didn’t think she had the skill to handle it. 
We also think that even if the trio had been able to discover another method for destroying Horcruxes, it would have taken them a long time to figure it out and even if Voldemort wasn’t victorious, he would have remained powerful for a much longer period of time.  

It is also possible that Voldemort may never have been destroyed. Without the discovery of the diary, Dumbledore and Harry may never have known about the piece of Voldemort’s soul concealed in it. As someone who hated everything to do with Muggles, it seemed like an odd choice of Horcrux for him. It certainly went against his regular pattern of wanting to use objects that almost seemed like trophies – such as Slytherin’s Locket or Ravenclaw’s Diadem. 

Similarly, if Lucius Malfoy had held onto it for a couple more years, the diary would have been back in Voldemort’s grasp and much harder to access. We doubt that Voldemort would have let something so important out of his sight once he knew that his Horcruxes were under threat. We also don’t know if Harry, Ron and Hermione would have been able to get close enough to take it from his possession.

## Would Ginny not have become as strong a witch? 
This is an interesting question. There is no doubt that Ginny came away from her experience with the diary and the Chamber of Secrets as a more resilient and wiser person. It was Ginny who was incredulous in *Half-Blood Prince*, when she found out that Harry had been taking orders from something someone wrote in a book. She knew just how dangerous it could be because of her experience and was a lot warier and a lot less naïve when it came to objects of unknown origin. 

Furthermore, the aftermath of this event probably forced Ginny to develop quite a tough skin. As we learn in *Cursed Child*, Ginny was shunned by her peers for a long time and probably felt quite isolated. But rather than letting that incident crush her, she remained confident and put on a cheery face – even though she still carried the weight of that horrific ordeal. 

Yet, we reckon Ginny would still have been as fierce and as strong even if she hadn’t had been through any of that. This was the witch who had been breaking into the Weasley’s broom shed since the age of six and taking each of her brothers’ brooms in turn to practice. She was also determined to be in the thick of things – whether that was as a member of Dumbledore’s Army, fighting underage in the Battle of Hogwarts or her schemes with Fred and George. Ginny Weasley had always been a strong and capable witch. While this incident may have influenced her personality – it didn’t change who she was.

## Would Ginny and Harry have ever become a couple?
We are pretty certain that Harry and Ginny would have still become a couple. Even if the Chamber of Secrets had not been opened, they still would have been very involved in each other’s lives. She was the sister of his best friend. She was also a fellow Gryffindor. They were both members of Dumbledore’s Army. They both played for the Gryffindor Quidditch team. Their similarities were still there, and we reckon the attraction would have still grown. 

It’s also worth remembering that it wasn’t Harry rescuing Ginny that sparked her crush on him – she was already smitten. She was the one who (probably) sent him a Valentine’s Day card before the events of the Chamber of Secrets, and she had always been flustered and giddy in his presence. Harry saving her may have reinforced those feelings, but they certainly didn’t cause them.

That’s not to say that the diary didn’t have any impact on their relationship. When Ginny was being shunned, it was Harry that reached out to her in the Gryffindor common room and asked her to play a game of Exploding Snap. Even as an adult she recalls how important that gesture was to her – and how it made her feel loved. 

Overall, we think Harry and Ginny would have still been together. They had such similar interests, and their temperaments were well suited. They both were excellent at supporting one another and knowing what each other needed. They handled decisions maturely – like their temporary break up when Harry went to hunt Horcruxes. So, we reckon that even without that awful shared experience, they still would have had many more moments where they would have got to know each other.

Ginny had an immensely strong spirit across the Harry Potter books, so strong in fact that Harry Potter himself began to notice after a while. But Ginny, accomplished Quidditch player and determined Gryffindor, was always far more than Harry’s girlfriend. And the very macabre chapter in which Harry breaks up with her is the one where we love her the most. 

## ‘The White Tomb’ 

Dumbledore was dead. As Harry and the people closest to him gathered for his funeral, Harry’s burning grief was not the only thing that he had on his mind. He knew that he must let go of someone else he’d grown to care for so deeply: Ginny. After spending a hefty portion of *Half-Blood Prince* realising he actually liked Ron’s little sister (and after Ginny spent the majority of her early years fancying Harry and blushing furiously whenever he was in the room), the pair finally did get together, and Harry finally had an ounce of happiness after so many dark days. After Dumbledore’s death, however, everything abruptly changed once again.

Harry realised he must go after Voldemort alone – and was in more danger than ever before as he planned to hunt down the Dark Lord’s Horcruxes. The least he could do, it seemed, was end his relationship with Ginny, to protect her. Or as Ginny defined it, for ‘stupid noble reasons’. 

> She met Harry’s gaze with the same hard, blazing look that he had seen when she had hugged him after winning the Quidditch Cup in his absence, and he knew that at that moment they understood each other perfectly, and that when he told her what he was going to do now, she would not say ‘Be careful’, or ‘Don’t do it’, but accept his decision, because she would not have expected anything less of him. And so he steeled himself to say what he had known he must say ever since Dumbledore had died.

## Why It Matters 

The way Ginny reacted to Harry breaking up with her showed how emotionally mature beyond her years she really was. Ginny had grown up now and accepted she didn’t just like some boy, she liked The Boy Who Lived. 

Harry had seen her as ‘Ron’s little sister’ for so long, but Ginny was so much more than a ‘girlfriend’ or a ‘sister’. Sure, when she first met Harry she was a blushing, shy girl, but let’s bear in mind she was only 11. After being possessed by Lord Voldemort’s diary and nearly dying in *Chamber of Secrets*, Ginny was not left wobbly and traumatised, but sturdier. In a mere handful of years, Ginny became a hardened fighter, capable of performing spells in Dumbledore’s Army that were extremely advanced for her age. She was also incredibly good at Quidditch, very funny (nicknaming Fleur Delacour ‘Phlegm’ a particular highlight) and seemed to be the perfect combination of all the Weasleys combined, including the irreverence of Fred and George, the good spirit of Ron, and the ferocity of Mrs Weasley. 

But most importantly, she was also a cynic, and greeted Harry’s emotional break-up (she was also at the funeral of her headmaster, let’s not forget) with an ambivalent wit. 

> ‘Ginny, listen ...’ he said very quietly, as the buzz of conversation grew louder around them and people began to get to their feet. ‘I can’t be involved with you any more. We’ve got to stop seeing each other. We can’t be together.’ 
> She said, with an oddly twisted smile, ‘It’s for some stupid, noble reason, isn’t it?’ 
> ‘It’s been like ... like something out of someone else’s life, these last few weeks with you,’ said Harry. ‘But I can’t ... we can’t ... I’ve got things to do alone now.’

Nope, she did not cry; she didn’t protest; she simply looked at Harry and calmly ruminated on how Hermione told her to try and move on from fancying Harry years ago, and how she learned to not get entrapped in the hearts of boys and be her own person. 

> ‘I never really gave up on you,’ she said. ‘Not really. I always hoped ... Hermione told me to get on with life, maybe go out with some other people, relax a bit around you, because I never used to be able to talk if you were in the room, remember? And she thought you might take a bit more notice if I was a bit more – myself.’ 
> ‘Smart girl, that Hermione,’ said Harry, trying to smile. ‘I just wish I’d asked you sooner. We could’ve had ages ... months ... years maybe ...’ 
> ‘But you’ve been too busy saving the wizarding world,’ said Ginny, half-laughing. ‘Well ... I can’t say I’m surprised. I knew this would happen in the end. I knew you wouldn’t be happy unless you were hunting Voldemort. Maybe that’s why I like you so much.’

She was right. Maybe Hermione had a word at some point around *Order of the Phoenix*, seeing as Ginny was suddenly far more confident during Harry’s fifth year. She gained a reputation for her notorious Bat-Bogey Hexes, she joined Dumbledore’s Army with vigour (even coming up with the name of it), then accompanied Harry all the way to the Department of Mysteries to fight Death Eaters, despite Harry’s several protests. In *Half-Blood Prince*, her relationship with Dean Thomas sparked an unexpected monstrous jealousy inside Harry, and even something as simple as Ginny not joining him in his Hogwarts Express carriage sparked annoyance – Ginny had got under Harry’s skin like he never realised, just at the moment Ginny had moved on from him. 

This is only fair considering Ginny spends a lot of the books being held back. How often do we see her storm out of the room because Mrs Weasley insisted she’s ‘too young’ for this, that, and the other? At the Battle of Hogwarts, Ginny was forced to remain safe, but headed out to fight anyway. Ginny seemed to find youth frustrating, as if she was wrapped in bubble wrap, always ever-so-slightly out of the action. Allow us to salute Ginny for learning to find herself, and find some humour in it, despite the world trying to protect her, be it Mrs Weasley or Harry Potter. 

Not that their break-up lasted that long anyway, eh?

Malfoy opinions notwithstanding, the pure-blood pure-cool members of the Weasley family are some of the bravest and boldest of the known wizarding world. They’re the Bludger-beaters, the dragon-tamers, the pranksters, the squabblers – and they stand together, united in gingery glory.

It takes a lot to stand out as a Weasley, what with there being so many of them, all with matching hair. But Ginny does it easily, due to her formidable disposition and the rare distinction of being a female, and she learned it all from Molly.

Like mother, like daughter – here’s all the proof that little Ginny, hex-caster and Quidditch-player extraordinaire, is the Molliest of all the Weasleys.

## They are both incredibly significant others

Ginny is as good a match to Harry as Molly is to Arthur, but make no mistake: these women are not the damsels in distress in their respective love stories.

Molly keeps her husband out of trouble, not to mention employed, by ensuring that his addiction to Muggle artefacts doesn’t become known to the Ministry; Ginny is always battling to fight alongside Harry even as the entire wizarding world, including her own brother, turns against him.

## But they like a good crush

Hormones run hot in the Weasley women. Ginny’s ongoing infatuation with Harry doesn’t stop her from engaging in multiple romantic dalliances with her classmates, while Molly’s unfailing loyalty to her ‘eckeltricity’-loving husband doesn’t stop her from cooking up a Celestina-style cauldron full of hot, strong love for Gilderoy Lockhart.

## They have their own magical specialities

There’s no dearth of magical talent among the Weasley brood, but Molly and Ginny each have impressive and specific magical skills. Molly’s, of course, tie in with her own personal preferences – so she’s not only marvellous at the magical assembly of feasts fit to feed five hundred, she’s also a dab hand at the killing curse if there’s a witch-gone-wrong in need of offing.

And Ginny? Aside from her classic Bat-Bogey Hex, which quickly becomes the stuff of legend, she also enjoys a nice, well-placed jinx, ideally one that will leave the subject disfigured. No surprise, really, given that she was saddled with six older brothers.

## They both put family first

It can’t be easy being a Weasley, what with the fighting and the flying cars – but both Molly and Ginny would defend each other, and the full clan of Weasley men, to the death. Which is lucky, since they have to do exactly that on a number of occasions.

## They’re both named ‘Molly’

Don’t be misled: Ginny, known to people who are angry with her as ‘Ginevra’, very much has her own name. But – little known fact – her middle name is none other than her mother’s first. Perhaps, post-birth, Molly was so very pleased to see that her seventh wasn’t yet another mini-Arthur, that she made sure of it by naming her after herself.

## They call it how they see it

When your world and family come under threat, it’s easy to do a Cornelius Fudge and ignore the enormous, world-destroying elephant in the room – but neither of the Weasley women are inclined towards obfuscation.
