THIS YEAR, THE BIGGEST HALLOWEEN TREAT
COMES IN NOVEMBER

Magic Comes to Life!

Little goblins and gremlins are looking forward to getting into the spirit with a spectacular vision of a Halloween adventure. Warner Bros® has used their magic to bring the first Harry PotterTM book, "The Philosopher's Stone" (aka "The Sorcerer's Stone") to life, and fans are already enchanted by what they have seen of the movie trailers.

Pint-sized Pressure

Unlike most Hollywood movies that do book adaptations, this one seems to have an unusual amount of pressure to be true to it's origins. Many members of the production are under highly strict orders to get it right, or they will be disowned by their offspring! Robbie Coltrane, who plays the giant Hagrid, and Richard Harris, who plays the part of Headmaster Dumbledore, said that there would have been a mutiny from their own kids if they had turned down the parts. Even Chris Columbus was threatened by his daughter, a huge fan of the books, to make the movie live up to her expectations.

Trick or Treat...

When you think of Halloween, you usually think about three things: Creativity, Parties, and Commercialization. By those standards, the Harry Potter movie completely embodies the spirit of Halloween.

It is a super creative production that is rumored to have lived-up to the atmosphere and special-effects of the story. Costumes, castles, wizards, and dragons are brought to life through the eyes of an 11-year-old child. Harry Potter is an ordinary boy just like any kid around the year 2000, and is not even aware that he is a wizard. When he finds out about his hidden "talents," he is awed as he discovers all the unusual and cool stuff that make up the world of wizards.

Harry Potter Movie parties are happening everywhere. Groups are organizing trips to the theatre premieres, and some people are even dressing up Halloween-style. It is truly an event as it has a 2 1/2 hour running time. Movie goers will certainly get their money's worth.

Harry Potter merchandise is big business! As part of their $150 million sponsorship, Coca-Cola® is giving $18 million to the U.S. RIF (Reading Is Fundamental) campaign. There are action figures, plush creatures, clothes, school supplies, and of course, all the books. The most awaited product is the Harry Potter video game by Electronic Arts. There are versions for the PC, Nintendo Gameboy® and Sony Playstation® - all scheduled to hit stores this month. Currently, the Harry Potter Collectable Card Game by Wizards of the Coast®, is hot with kids at school.

Boo!

There is also a very special addition to the movie that has the book fans on the edge of their seats! The Harry Potter books are an epic mystery, and as of this time, there are still many questions yet unanswered in the seven-book mystery - a large part of the reason people are so eager to get to the next book. The biggest mysteries surround Harry Potter's ancestry and the circumstances of his parents' murder.

J.K. Rowling had originally written a special segment concerning these mysteries, but had held them out from the first book before it was published. Now fans have been told that she had them included in the movie script. What new clues will this reveal? The Internet is buzzing with anticipation....

Movie Magic

The whole Harry Potter phenomenon is filled with fairytale stories. The author, J.K. Rowling, struggled before her work was published, and now the movie will make instant stars of the child actors. For many of the children, this will have been their first professional acting role.

Warner Bros may have been disappointed that the movie did not make it in time for last Christmas, but this will be a welcome treat in the United States. Not only is it a great fantasy escape for us in sad times, but movie and related product sales are a welcome boost in a very slow economy.
