FANS, STORES, AND EVEN THE MOVIE STUDIO ARE CELEBRATING HARRY'S BIRTHDAY! What if you were a kid and never had a birthday party, a cake, or hardly ever received any birthday presents? What if your only birthday present was a pair of old socks? What if you also had to sit and watch your bullying cousin each year open up video games, bicycles, and piles of great presents? Harry PotterTM is an unwelcomed child - dumped on the doorstep of his Uncle Vernon, Aunt Petunia, and Cousin Dudley (the Dursleys) when he was one year-old. They treat him like a step child, abusing him relentlessly. It is a Cinderella story for males. Harry's "glass slipper" arrives at precisely midnight on July 31, the night of his 11th birthday. It comes in the form of a parchment letter (written in green ink) - containing an invitation to attend the most prestigious school for young wizards in all of Britain. It is delivered by a gentle giant (Hagrid), who also hands Harry his first-ever birthday cake. From that moment on, Harry Potter's life is changed... Harry finds out that his parents were not killed in an automobile crash, as the Dursleys led him to believe, but by an evil wizard (Voldemort) who had inflicted a reign of terror over the wizarding world. The strangest part about it all is that it was Harry who had defeated him. After killing his parents, Voldemort had attacked the baby Harry, but the curse just rebounded - zapping the evil wizard. It had left a scar in the shape of a lightning bolt on Harry's forehead, but at only one year-old, Harry had defeated a powerful wizard, and was already famous - quite a change from where his life had been going. But there is even more significance to that date... On July 31st, 1965, another baby had been born. That baby, Joanne, had grown up to be a teacher, but was having trouble finding work in a depressed economy, so had been supporting her daughter on public assistance. One day, Harry Potter comes to her in a daydream on a train, and with the help of a magical grant from the Scottish Arts Council, she authors the book "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone." It is the true-life fairytale of J. K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter stories. Needless to say, her life was also changed forever. So where's the party?? There are Harry Potter birthday events going on both online and offline. Book stores (such as Barnes & Noble) are holding Harry Potter birthday parties. The Warner Bros. site has a special birthday card where visitors can leave a birthday greeting for Harry. This weekend, Wizards of the Coast (manufacturer of the Pokemon Collectable Card Game) will be debuting the Harry Potter Trading Card Game at GenCon in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The movie and the video game are scheduled to premier November 16 of this year. Fans are celebrating July 31st as the symbol of the positive change that surrounds the whole incredible Harry Potter story. |
