Butterbeer Fact File Body Text

Butterbeer was a popular wizarding drink that was served in magical cafes, pubs and shops across the wizarding world. It could either be served warm and foaming in tankards or cold in bottles and tasted like a less-sweet butterscotch. Butterbeer had a slight alcoholic content and although was safe for children to drink, it could affect creatures (such as [house-elves](/fact-file/creatures/house-elf)) if consumed in to high a quantity. Harry enjoyed his first Butterbeer in [Hogsmeade.](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade)

While most [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think of a broomstick as a handy tool for keeping their houses clean, in the wizarding world, brooms are not only a useful mode of transportation, but also essential for the game of [Quidditch](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/quidditch). Regulated by [the Ministry of Magic](/fact-file/locations/the-ministry-of-magic)'s Broom Regulatory Control, flying brooms ranged from the very basic to top of the range. [Harry Potter](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter) has been lucky enough to hold two of the best: a Nimbus 2000, and later, a state-of-the-art Firebolt. Broomsticks can be bought from a number of places, most notably Quality Quidditch Supplies in [Diagon Alley,](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley) and are one of the most sought-after magical objects for Hogwarts students.

A popular pub located in the wizarding village of Hogsmeade, The Three Broomsticks was a warm, cosy place owned and run by Madam Rosmerta. Rumoured to be as old as the village itself, the inn was popular not only with villagers but also hags and other non-human magical beings. The Three Broomsticks served drinks such as [Butterbeer](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/butterbeer) and Firewhisky and was popular with [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) teachers and students alike.

Hogsmeade Fact File Body Text

The only entirely non-Muggle settlement in Britain, Hogsmeade was located in the highlands of Scotland, close to [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts). Pupils were permitted to visit the town in their third year of school, which allowed them to frequent many unique magical shops, pubs and restaurants. Pupil favourites included [Honeydukes](/fact-file/locations/honeydukes) sweetshop and Zonko’s joke shop. Less popular was the supposedly haunted [Shrieking Shack](/fact-file/locations/the-shrieking-shack).

Rita Skeeter was a wizarding journalist best known for her poison pen articles for the [Daily Prophet](/fact-file/objects/the-daily-prophet) and her harsh biographies. Skeeter's Quick-Quotes Quill was always working hard as she penned venomous articles about well known witches and wizards, many of which were concocted from a variety of lies, make-believe and conjecture. She utilised a number of underhand tactics in order to gain the insider information she was after, including becoming an illegal Animagus and the use of [Veritaserum](/fact-file/plants-and-potions/veritaserum).

Sirius Black Fact File Body Text

Coming from one of the oldest (and darkest) of magical families, the rebellious Sirius Black chose not to follow in the footsteps of his other family members, many of whom became [Death Eaters](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/death-eaters). Instead, Black made firm friends with [James Potter](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/james-potter) while at [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) (they were both [Gryffindors](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor)) and was even made godfather of James' son, Harry, in their later years. Framed for a crime he didn't commit, Sirius was taken to [Azkaban](/fact-file/locations/azkaban) prison, but many years later, he would escape, forge a new relationship with Harry and rejoin the fight against Voldemort with the secret organisation, the [Order of the Phoenix](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/order-of-the-phoenix).

Harry Potter was prophesied to be the downfall of [Lord Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and therefore singled out at birth as the Dark Lord's rival. He was known in the wizarding world as 'The Boy Who Lived' after becoming the only known survivor of [the Killing Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-killing-curse), which was attempted by Voldemort when Harry was just a baby, after both his parents were murdered. But despite causing one of the most famous wizarding world events, Harry did not know he was a wizard until his eleventh birthday, due to his Muggle aunt and uncle neglecting to tell him. He would eventually go on to Hogwarts, discover his magical potential, and embark upon several great adventures with his best friends, [Ron](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/ron-weasley) and [Hermione](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hermione-granger).
